hi, new to the lists, looking for info on my TOLIVER family, possible spellings are numerous- possibly an English line descended from Portugal... have had many definition of the surname given to me over the years, the most probable seems to be a Jewish origin- TOLIVER meaning in Portugese 'belonging to Oliver... also there have been 17th century mentions of the name Toliver & Taliaferro (interchangeable according to a persons spelling upon hearing the name!) having been entered in a Jewish synagogue in Toledo, Spain- also, my family has had intermarriage with female of the Choctaw & Cherokee Native American tribe in the USa in the late 17 to earliewst 1800s, as well as having been settled in the areas of the Powhattan Tribe in the late 1600s- it is implied the Toliver family of Engfland may be considered of Portugese &/or Melungeon descent... any information would be so very appreciated... Hope to hear from some of you soon ! Happy Hunting ! Sheri in Illinois, USA... 8th Generation Toliver --- 'Without Struggle there can be No Progress.'
