Louisa Evansville Curier & Press Friday, May 16, 2008 Rachel Jean (Bristow) Fisher Altheide Rachel Jean (Bristow) Fisher Altheide left this world on May 14th, 2008, at the age of 84. She was a very strong and a very proud woman and her body gave up although her spirit never waned. She lived life to the fullest and loved life and everything about it. She was the oldest daughter of of Grover Cleveland Bristow and Laverne (Johnson) Bristow. Her father, a vetern of the fighting in France in WWII, died when she was 9 years old and she was eventually raised by her Aunt, Marye Moore, in and around the tri-state area. She was a descendant of the Kentucky Bristow's who came from Ireland/England by way of Virginia and founded several churches in Kentucky, the last one being near Owensboro, Ky. Her family linage includes Daniel Boone of Kentucky. She was fortunate to have been married to two wonderful husband's for more than 25 years each. Her first love, Willard Fisher of Chandler, Ind., died of cancer in 1968, at the young age of 49. She later married Adolph Altheide of Evansville and was with him until he passed away in 1999. She will be at rest next to both of them in Greenwood Cemetery in Chandler. Rachel worked for years at the Pigeon Township trustee office and loved her work and the people she worked with. She remained close to her co-workers after she retired from her job. She was a lifelong Democrat and served in a variety of capacities for the Democratic Party in Vanderburg County and loved her work as a Precinct Committeewoman. She loved her Friday Fellowship group at Bethel United Church of Christ and also enjoyed her cards and Bingo. She was good at both! She is survived by her three children from her marriage to Willard, plus nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Her oldest child is her daughter, Barbara of Colorado Springs and her three children, Tony, Debbie, and Buddy Alan and their spouses and children; Barbara is married to Ralph Elmore. Her second child was her son, William of Omaha, Neb., his wife Kay and their three sons, William, Jon, and Patrick and their wives and children. Finally, her youngest daughter, Bonnie and her husband, Larry Thompson and their three children, Dawn, Michael, and Jill and their spouses and children. Bonnie, along with considerable help from her daughter, Dawn, was Rachel's caretaker for many years and sacrificed herself in order to make things comfortable for her mother. Although her marriage to Adolph didn't result in any new children, she became a loving stepmother to his two children, Harry Burdette and Pam McDaniels and their spouses and families. In addition, she is survived by her close and beloved brother, Neal Bristow, his desceased wife, Gertie, and his two daughters, Nyla (also a considerate caretaker for Rachel) and Jeannie and their spouses and children and also by her beloved younger sister, Charlene Broomball of Dayton, Ohio, her husband, Bill, and Charlene's children. She was a strong willed redhead from a long line of strong willed women and will be remembered for her love of life. Everyone who knew her will miss her.
