    1. [VIRGINIA] Letters to Santa-1910
    2. Hi all, I have some copies from microfilms from the old "News Leader," a former newspaper of Richmond city. These are all from 1910. I thought perhaps some of you would enjoy reading these and also hopefully find some relatives among the children at the time who wrote these. The following are from "The News Leader," Richmond, Va., Saturday Afternoon, December 10, 1910 issue, page 5. Watch out the first one seems to be an adult trying to be funny! Maybe he didn't think they would actually place it in the paper. The others seem to be from children. And if you see errors in spelling, missing commas, etc. I am placing these down as I see them written. 1. [VIRGINIA] Birth of Mary Coleman, 1898
    2. Hi all, I have been through tons of old newspapers, but birth listings in the Virginia newspapers I have seen have been very few. Now by the 1920's and 1930's one could see alot of births in some of the daily papers. Just recently I ran across a birth from "The Richmond Dispatch," Richmond, Va., Thursday, May 12, 1898 issue, page 3, column 5: BIRTHS COLEMAN.-Born, on Monday, May 9th to Garland and Lydia S. Coleman, No. 203 east Grace street, a daughter, MARY VIRGINIUS BLANTON COLEMAN. It said Births as the heading but there was just listed this one. I checked several days after and saw no more. Hopeful this will help someone. God bless, Beth [email protected]

    1. Re: [VIRGINIA] Marriage records for the 1780s.
    2. Hi Eldon & all, Back in the 1700's there were marriage bonds and minister's returns and sometimes consent papers, if needed. Hwoever there were no marriage records with personal information re: parents names, ages, birthplaces, etc. until 1853 in most of Virginia. The marriage bonds have the signatures of the groom and his security on them as well as the names of the couple. If one fo the parties to be married was under 21 a consent paper was needed with a parent or guardian sigining to give permission for the marriage. A minister's return would usually exist, the minister himself filling out the form with the actual date of the marriage. And the date of the bond is not necessarily the date of the marriage. A marriage could take place a little later or much later after the bond was drawn up. Usually it was shirtly after but not always. If the minister's return still exists that would have a date of marriage. One can get these items usually at a courthouse for the particular county or the Library of Virginia which has many but not all. Also it depends on what counties were burned. The state of Virginia has had a few wars go through here. And some county records were burned or stolen. As well as some regular fires during peaceful times. But try the courthouse or the LVA for the marriage bonds. 3. Hi Beth, Thanks for correcting my broad use of the phrase "marriage record". I never expected to find personal information (re: parents names, ages, birthplaces, etc.) about marriages in the 1780s. I simply would like to know when and where these folks got hitched. I hope that clarifies my goal. 1. Re: [VIRGINIA] Frederic Thrasher
    2. Hi all, Yes the courthouse may have a will if he left one, but the Library of Virginia has alot of the same court, will and deeds records as many of the counties do. Not all of course. However as far as a death record from the state of Virginia for 1852 they kept none until 1853. Unless the county where he died has some before that. The state of Virginia kept death records from 1853-1896. And because of their budget cuts(even back then!) from 1897- June 13th of 1912 the state kept no brth or death records in that time period. A few counties and cities kept some of their own. But do try LVA or the county courthouse for a will record, you may find some more information in a court record book as well. And Debra is right while LVA will be keeping their databases they have now online they will not be able to add any more info to them, at least for the present because of the budget cuts. God bless, Beth [email protected] > Hello Phil, > > Both places you mentioned would have the death record on your Frederic Thrasher. > < the Library of Virginia ? , a court house> > The Roanoke County Courthouse may contain the added bonus of his will. 1. [VIRGINIA] Marriage records for the 1780s.
    2. Eldon Wade
    3. Howdy Folks, First let me apologize if you receive more than one copy of this message as I am cross posting. I am seeking advice on where I may find a marriage record (express or implied) for an Edward WADE b. 1760 VA who m. Nancy Ann (surname unknown) about 1780. The marriage could have taken place in the SC Old 96 District, NC, KY, or even VA. In 1790 they are on the Old Pendleton Dist SC census with 3 sons and 2 daughters. Since all the children are under 16 in 1790 and in light of Edward being b. 1760 I am estimating the marriage date being about 1780. Edward is the son of Edward WADE and wife Mary CLEMENTS and I know a great deal about this family but I want to establish Nancy Ann's maiden name. It is a possibility she is a BURFORD (BUFORD, BEAUFORD, etc.). Records often spell Edward's surname as WAID or WAIDE in addition to the common spelling of WADE. Any suggestions on where I might find a record of the marriage of Edward WADE and Nancy Ann would be very appreciated. Thank you, Eldon mailto:[email protected] List admin. for SC Old 96 Researching: WADE, HAMES

    2. Debra Rookard
    3. Hello Phil, Both places you mentioned would have the death record on your Frederic Thrasher. < the Library of Virginia ? , a court house> The Roanoke County Courthouse may contain the added bonus of his will. Then there's always the Historical Society you can turn to for tremendous help. The Roanoke Co Genweb Site has the 1840 Census indexed and Thrasher appears on pg 223.1850 is indexed as well. There is an extensive cemetery transcription listed on the site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~varoanok/ The Virginia Genalogical Society has undertaken the ongoing project of transcribing death records according to counties and posting it on the Library of Virginia site. With the recent budget cuts at the Library, it is doubtful that this will continue. Roanoke County has no one doing this. Much Luck, Debra
