I'm looking for the parents for my Beuford T. Murphy (Murphey). He was born 1810 in Botetourt Co. (Amsterdam), VA I have him on 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1970 Census of Botetourt, and I have his wife and all of his children. and yes, I have searched both the Murpheys and the Murphy's. The "e" has been interchanged from one decade to another. The only link that I have been able to find about his parents is his mother's name, Frances. She is listed in the 1850 Census living with him and his family, and was age 60 in 1850, putting her birth about 1790. According to the 1850 census, she was born in Virginia. BUT I HAVE NO MAIDEN NAME! I have no other information on him, only that he was born in Botetourt Co., in 1810. Of course, the 1850 census only has his mother's first name and married name, not maiden. I know nothing of his mother's family, or who his father was, or even if they originated in Botetourt. How do I go about finding out parents THAT FAR BACK? I have never had to search on an ancestor prior to 1840. Any suggestions would be great! Sincerely, Lisa Murphey Ward Yulee, FL [email protected]
William A. HARPER who died in Georgia in 1812. According to information I recently received, his son, Andrew Knox, my great grandmother's oldest brother and a son of William A. was born in Virginia. The other two siblings were Harriet and Jefferson, the mother was Anne, Ring any bells? Jackie DeBlois
Hi Barb, The first census that I found LEWIS BEAN in was 1870 in Lee Township, Shenandoah Cty, Va. But on the Shenandoah Valley site, his marriage to HANNAH SHEETZ is listed as May 18, 1852. And at one point he had bought a property in Mt. Jackson, the Robert Ryman home. It was later sold. I think he bought it before the war, and it was sold for him. But I cannot find him as serving in the war. He would have been the right age to serve, and there were no children born to them throughout the war years, so I assume he went to war, or into hiding<Grin> I found George, his son, and his wife in the 1900 census, but in looking throughout the same county, Ashby, Lewis was not living near. I think it is clear I need to get back into the census and search Virginia from one end to the other. That should occupy most of the next ten years. And when that is done, I'' ll move on to Maryland. Thanks for your help. See you in ten years. LOL!! Carol
Oh, my gosh!! I expected a suggestion or two , but the response has been most heart-warming. I have received many wonderful suggestions, which I intend to follow up. The first criticism I got was not including the names. I really did not want you to do my leg work for me. Just some suggestions on what avenues I should pursue in my quest. But since you insist <Grin> here goes. Lewis BEAN was born approximately 1825 in Maryland to parents (unknown) whose origin was supposedly Holland. I have even written to a Bean in Holland, and he had not a clue of anyone who had migrated. So, the next record I have of Lewis BEAN is in Lee Township, Shenandoah County, Virginia. He marries HANNAH SHEETZ in 1852. Their oldest GEORGE M. BEAN is born in 1854.GEORGE M. has a liaison with CATHERINE WEAVER daughter of John and MAry Weaver of the same area which produces GEORGE THOMAS BEAN in 1873. GEORGE THOMAS is my grandfather. And, in the 1880 census, that poor child is not listed with either father George M., or mother, CATHERINE WEAVER.. GEORGE BEAN is already, by now, married to SARAH V. BARR, and they have started their own family. CATHERINE WEAVER is about to be married to ABRAHAM MILLER of Shenandoah Cty. Now, my problem is finding Lewis Bean's parents. In reading census reports from George BEAN from 1900, he states his father was born in Germany. Was Holland ever a part of Germany? And how would I find German BEANS? And, last and most important. Thank you, each and every one of you, for taking the time to respond. To have so many willing to help is just overwhelming. Carol
I am searching for information or a connection to Martha Moore who was married to Joseph Dodson 1768 to 1770's . Any information appreciated
I have posted this message to several sources, hoping someone has an answer. There seems to be a paper trail for those who have bought and sold land, made wills. etc. Where does one go to find a relative who probably was dirt poor, and never did any lthing that would involve paper work? Some people have researched their families so thoroughly, that they know what they had for breakfast. I can't even determine my g-g-g-grandfather's first name or where he is buried. I just can't believe they all lived up in the mountains, and never had any contact with the world. CAn someone point into which direction I should search? I'd be grateful for any pointers. Carol
In answer to Lisa' question (below), I just checked the Germanna website: http://www.germanna.com/HCL.htm to find the following information: The German Lutheran Church outside Madison, Virginia, (now known as Hebron) maintained communion lists from 1775 to 1822. It has been observed that the lists of names are in the order of seating and that relatives often sat together. As a consequence, the lists have proven to be valuable for genealogical research besides being interesting but I have an additional question. I have a 2-gr-grandfather named Edward Pinkard Hawkins (his middle name was his mother's maiden name). In E.P.'s obit it says that he preached at the following churches: Forest Hill, Hebron, Elys Ford. ... I know where Forest Hill is located. It is near Melton's Virginia or the town of Louisa in the county of Louisa. Is anyone familiar with the other two churches? I feel sure that this is a different Hebron Church as he was an old line Baptist preacher. Marsha in WV Lisa/John Ward wrote: > > Can anyone tell me what faith the Hebron Church is? Source: Handy Book for Genealogists Edited by George B. Everton Sr., Sixth Edition The Everton Publisher, Inc. West Virginia came into existence as a direct result of the Civil War. That section had always been part of Virginia, even though the two sections never had much in common. One of the main reasons for this, no doubt, is the rugged Allegheny mountain range separating the two sections which made traveling between them rather difficult. When Virginia cast its lot with the Confederacy, the settlers west of the Alleghenies began to murmur. The complaint eventually became so loud and demanding that a separate government for the western section was organized in 1861 under the name of Kanawha. Two years later West Virginia was admitted into the Union as the thirty-fifth state with a total of 50 counties. Since then five counties have been added. Most of the counties in West Virginia were settled years before they were organized. Greenbrier and Ohio Counties were settled in 1769. Greenbrier County, was created in 1777 from Montgomery County. Lewisburg is the county seat. Census reports are available since 1820. The County Ckerk has b & d records from 1853; marriage records from 1780 & probate records from 1780. Hope this helps, Ira
Hi Lisa, When West Virginia became a state in 1862 the counties that formed the state at that time had previously been part of the larger state of Virginia. Therefore alot of the counties in the state of West Virginia were formed before the formation of the state. Greenbrier County was formed in 1778. Hope this helps. Vicky Subject: [VIRGINIA] HELP! Looking for Joseph Price who married Elizabeth Keener, probably in VA about 1785. She was the Granddaughter of Ulrich Keener I of Shenandoah, VA and later Fayette/Greene County, PA/VA.
