VA,then WV & NC- one of the '5 NC Brothers'(Moses,Charles,John,William) *haver the Stamper lines as well!! s/o.....??? the family mystery... thought to have been either of the Taliaferro family's line, DNA has now disproven any relation- having been born @ 1756 in Faquier VA,his Rev War pension states that he was moved by his father at an early age & since Faquier took a beating in the war, their papers are almost non existant for research... strangely, the given names of the '5 brothers' are in line exactly with the Taliaferro names, especially of the two generations directly prior to them... Jesse seems to have been a popular Stamper name,as well as John(athon, so perhaps those are not too odd, but the William & Charles are in many a Taliaferro household before these guys... at any rate- i have lots of info, on the men,the wives & the offspring- for the wives lines i have STAMPER,ISOM & REED/READ(E) info back to England... hope to hear rom many of you, im also posted on several other lists, including the Census & Cemetery ones with this info... Looking for a Wiley FLAKE. Found him in AL 1880 Census. Cant find him afterwards. Can someone help? The trick is, folks find his son Wiley FLAKE/FLAKES (jr) in other Census in AL and MS. But I am highly interested in the father, Wiley FLAKE. His wife was Cata/Katie Flournoy FLAKE. Wiley might have moved to Virgina or North Carolina. Karen Rogers Good Things are Always Happening!
I'm looking for anyone working on Spear in Virginia. My great uncle, Kempis Spear, lived in the Norfolk area in the 1920's. thanks..
Can some kind soul please check the Virginia 1850 and 1860 censuses for me for these people: W.F. (William F.) MCCLENAHAN was a Virginia born U.S. Navy surgeon. In 1861 he resigned from U.S. service to enter the C.S. Navy. His wife was Catherine Desabaye Ridgely. She was from Georgia and the widow of Capt. Randolph Ridgely, U.S. Army, who died in Mexico in 1846. She had one child, Randolph Ridgely, born in 1844, and and least one other, W.F. MCCLENAHAN, b. c.1851. The two young men were living together in Georgia in 1870 and 1880. When Randolph Ridgely enrolled in Mt. St. Mary's College prep school in Maryland in 1855 (age 10) his home was Norfolk and McClenahan was his guardian. By the 1860 Navy Register, McClenahan was at the Washington Navy Yard. 1861-62 correspondence shows him and "Kate" McClenahan at Fredericksburg. A resume of his CSN service shows him at the Richmond Naval Station, 1861-63, and at Charlotte, NC, 1863-65. After the war he served in the Peruvian Navy for period of time. Can anyone find W.F. or Catherine "Kate" McClenahan or Randolph Ridgely in the 1850 and/or 1860 Virginia census? Thanks for any help. Russell K. Brown
Dear Pat, Thanks for answering. No, I don't know what part of VA George W. Wolford and John Ellsworth Chappell were from but SKS advised me to send it to this list - snip <<<<<<< You might want to post your questions to the Loudoun Co. VA mailing list also - there are a number of Paxon/Paxtons in the early records - even a few Wolfords and Chappels - you might be able to make a connection or two.... Good Luck in your research. unsnip >>>>>> I have always seen Sarah McDonald Paxton listed in the censuses as having been born in MD but both of her husbands' families came from VA and they all lived in DC at some point. John Ellsworth Chappell was born in VA but his grandfather, John Chapple, left him property in Tenleytown, Washington, DC. Sarah Paxton married both husbands with DC licenses. George W. Wolford is listed as being born in VA and I don't know much more but there were Wolford's in VA and in up counties MD. Some in Frederick and Washington Counties, MD and some in different parts of VA including some of the parts which became WV. (Not too far apart as the birds fly - but across the river.) Many of my antecedents have been found on owning property on both sides of the river. One example: My Bohrer's were in Frederick Counties MD & VA from before 1720. I know a little about the Chappell's but not my Paxton's and Wolford's. I was hoping for a will or probate record for Sarah's or George's parents or <VBG> rich uncle or some wonderful thing like that :-). Sometimes SKS knows a lot and/or does a look-up that gives me a sniff or direction to follow. So I thought I'd ask and see if anyone knew anything about these families. Thanks, again. Anyone familiar with any of these folks please let me know, thanks~~Nena Pinkney A. Bozarth, farmer, was born in Howard County, Mo., November 13. 1823, son of **Jonathan and Cyntha (Gross) Bozarth**. The father was born in Virginia, April 21, 1780; was a successful farmer, and at the age of nineteen married his first wife, Miss Nancy Alexander. They then moved to Christian County, Ky., and from there to Howard County, Mo., in 1818, where they purchased 400 acres of land. The father died in 1856. His second marriage was with Miss Gross, a native of Kentucky, born 1811. She was married in Missouri to Mr. Bozarth, and after his death she moved to Collins County, Texas, where she died in 1885. She was of Scotch descent, a member of the Christian Church, and an energetic, persevering woman. Their family consisted of six children: Lucinda, Pinkney A., Elnora, Jonathan, Benjamin and Elizabeth. Pinkney A. Bozarth received an ordinary education, and at the age of twenty-seven, married Miss Helen M. Terrell. He immigrated to California in 1850, followed mining for one year and then returned, but in 1861 moved to Collins County, Texas, where he engaged in farming. In 1863 he volunteered in Col. Stone's regiment, Confederate army, Texas cavalry, and served through the war. He was in the battles of Mansfield, Pleasant Hill and Fort Donelson, also other battles. In 1866 Mr. Bozarth and family moved to Benton County, Ark., and here the wife died in 1871. She was born near Louisville, Ky., October 28, 1830, was a member of the Christian Church, and was the mother of these children: Jonathan R., Alice, Cornelia, Emma, William F., Willis L., Mollie A., Cynthia R. The members of this family now deceased are Alice, Cornelia, Emma and Cynthia. Mr. Bozarth took for his second wife Mrs. Polly A. Berry, a native of Wilson County. Tenn., born October 8, 1858, and was married in after years to Mr. **Arnold Berry. One child, James [p.813] Berry**, was the result of that marriage. She moved to Benton County, Ark., February 15, 1873, and in May of the same year married Mr. Bozarth. Her parents, Redden and Polly (Farrington) Fields, were natives of Tennessee. [For further particulars of parents see sketch of John A. Fields.] Mr. Bozarth is a Democrat in politics, and is an excellent citizen of the county. _________________________________________________________________ Gift-shop online from the comfort of home at MSN Shopping! I have some conflicting data here..wondering if anyone is familiar with family of Thomas Gilliland, Hinch or any of the other data involved..any assistance is appreciated, thank you. Nena Original data: Children of HANNAH DEWITT and JOHN HINCH are: i.Samuel S. HINCH. He md1 Hannah GILLILAND, daughter of Thomas GILLILAND & Mary Polk. She was born 1799 in Hardin, KY. He md2 Nancy STANDIFORD, daughter of James STANDIFORD. She md Samuel Hinch on August 7, 1799. Samuel was her father's age(past 50). Samuel was also a neighbor in Donegal Township, Ohio Co Va and migrated about the same time the Gilliland's did or maybe a bit earlier. **He was md to a woman who was also named "Hannah" and had at least three daughters and a son and probably more. All of the daughters were older than Hannah G and some of the grandchildren were as old.** The oldest daughter Elizabeth and her husband William Brownfield signed their marriage bond. Elizabeth had married William in 1784. Fifteen years before her father and Hannah married. In 1791, Samuel had bought 500 acres of land thirty some miles south of the Gilliland's on waters of Green River, near the confluence of Nolin Rivers, between Little Clifty, Caney Creek and Dog Creek. The purchase price was 50 pounds. This location is now where Mammoth Cave National Park. Not a great distance from the cave. I found a cousin Becca Gilliland and between she,her uncle, and Wayne Fourmont, we have made a connection. Wayne Fourmont is about 90 years old and have been doing research on the Gilliland family for over 60 years or more..along with Becca's Uncle Jim Gilliland. I have information from Hardin County, of the children of Thomas and Mary Polk and also from Priscilla Huff (spelling is different) and their children, if you like I will make copies of what I have and forward to you and yours. Also there is a Carol Copeland Thompson who applied with the DAR and was accept thru Capt. Thomas her relative was Hannah...do you know who she is..lived at that time in Arizona. I have even made contact with some of the people looking for Polly Morrison who md James Gilliland..we still have not found her parents, but keep trying. My records show Hannah Gilliland is the daughter of Mary Polk and Thomas Gilliland, Mary Polk was Thomas Gilliland's first wife, after she died leaving him 5 small children, he married Priscilla Huff in Hardin Co., Ky. I have that Hannah Gilliland had a brother James Gilliland who married Polly Morrison, they had a Thomas Gilliland who married Elizabeth Lemaster who had a large family, and one of the children is my ggrandfather James Lee Gilliland.>Dee _________________________________________________________________ Is there a gadget-lover on your gift list? hi, new to the lists, looking for info on my TOLIVER family, possible spellings are numerous- possibly an English line descended from Portugal... have had many definition of the surname given to me over the years, the most probable seems to be a Jewish origin- TOLIVER meaning in Portugese 'belonging to Oliver... also there have been 17th century mentions of the name Toliver & Taliaferro (interchangeable according to a persons spelling upon hearing the name!) having been entered in a Jewish synagogue in Toledo, Spain- also, my family has had intermarriage with female of the Choctaw & Cherokee Native American tribe in the USa in the late 17 to earliewst 1800s, as well as having been settled in the areas of the Powhattan Tribe in the late 1600s- it is implied the Toliver family of Engfland may be considered of Portugese &/or Melungeon descent... any information would be so very appreciated... Visitors to the Alexandria Library, Special Collections have long admired the 1862 Topographical Map of the Original District of Columbia and Environs: Showing the Fortifications around the City of Washington by E. G. Arnold. Its pastel shades highlight the several wards of Washington, DC, water courses, and the original boundary of the District of Columbia including the 30 square miles of Northern Virginia that was ceded back to the Commonwealth in 1846. This is an exceptionally rare map; we had no idea how rare. According to the Spring/Summer 2003 (Vol. 15, No. 1) issue of Washington History, two days after the map went on sale in various shops in 1862, the U.S. War Department confiscated most copies. The same fate befell the copper plate that was used to print the original maps. In addition, the Department obtained the names of purchasers and seized the maps from the homes of private citizens to prevent it from falling into Confederate hands. The map identifies and locates 51 forts that defended Washington, DC during the Civil War. The legacy of these forts remains with such local place names as Fort Totten, a station on Metrorails Red and Green Lines, and Alexandrias own Fort Ward Museum. We were a little nervous letting our treasure out of its frame and out of the Library, but a local printing company did an overhead color scan for us to digitize it. The full size image file took an hour to open on the printing companys computer. We had them step it down to a 300 dpi image at about 1/3 the size of the original. There are likely other libraries with such rarities in their collections. Want to see it online?
