This is a good resource. If you go to 'Browse and Read' you will be able to look through all the categories, but you can, also, search the entire site for a particular name or place. Free, Nonprofit Library for Genealogy & History-Related Research http://www.webroots.org/library/main.html ALSO: Von Stachon recently transcribed about 600 court records, deeds and wills for several counties in Virginia. She made images of many of the common words found in these old documents, and has prepared a table showing the handwriting with the transcribed word. Hi: I'm new to this list and hope someone is researching the GANNON name. My great grandfather, Thomas GANNON, b. Ireland, m. Ireland, had one son, John M. GANNON, b. abt 1850. His first wife died in Ireland and Thomas and John came to America, where Thomas m. Mary Ann MCCREA in 1856 in Baltimore, MD. They had one daughter, Anna Teresa, who m. James A. KELLY. in 1875. John M. GANNON moved to Weems Creek, Irvington, Lancaster Co., VA, near the Rappahannock River, where he farmed and operated a three masted schooner up and down the east coast. He m. Elizabeth ROWE, b. Feb. 1852 in VA., between 1879-1882. They adopted one son, John R., b. about 1905. John M. died sometime after 1910 in VA. Since I can find no record of the death of Thomas in MD, there is a possibility he died at the home of John in VA. I also haven't found a death record for either John. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Mary Jean
Randolph Ridgely enlisted in Captain William Randolph's company of the 39th Virginia Cavalry Battalion on 9 November 1862 at Stone Bridge, Virginia. Captain Randolph had entered service in August 1862 in Farquhar County. Where is/was Stone Bridge? Is it the same Stone Bridge over Bull Run that figured in that battle? Russell

Hi all, Sorry it has been several days since I last posted some of these letters. As we all are this time of year I have been busy getting ready for Christmas! :) If I am not sure of a word because in the paper it was faded or something then I will place a question mark after it. The spelling if incorrect I leave alone so you are reading it just as it was in the old paper. The following are from "The News Leader," Richmond, Va., Friday Afternoon, December 13, 1912 issue. The first few from the front page: "Dear Santa Claus--I wish to tell you what I want. Please give me a doll carriage, I would also like very much to have a stove and a table. A set of Tin dishes and also a Broom. I want some candies and nuts, and an orange and an apple. Give me a new Dress and a Pocket Book with some money in it. Your old(?)friend, JANIE GOLDEN, 1704 Venable St., City." "Dear Santa Claus--I am a little girl 9 years old and go to school every day. Please bring me a doll baby and a story book. And please don't forget my little nephew Dan. Your little girl, KATHERINE WINKLY, 344(?) Brooke avenue." "Dear Santa Claus--I will write you a few lines to let you know what I want, although I expect a right sad Christmas, (continues to page 19) this year as I lost my mother about four months ago. I am not choice in what I want, I will be thankful of any thing you should bring me. I am only 5 years old. I will close, hoping you won't forget me. I remain your little boy, IZONA EDLOE PATE, 1523 West Marshall street, City." "Dear Old Santa--I will drop you a few lines to let you know what I want Xmas, although I don't expect much this year as my mamma died this summer. I was expecting a big doll, but I will be thankful of any thing you choose to bring us. Don'tt forget to bring us some candy and nuts. I remain, Your little girl, 8 years old, NORA LOREL PATE, 1523 West Marsahll street." "Dear Santa Claus--I wish you would please bring me a horn, wagon and soem candy and nuts. WALTER THURSTON, 1527 West Marshall street." "Dear Santa Claus--I wish you would please bring me a horn, some candy and nuts and a Wealbair. AUBREY THURSTON, 1527 West Marshall street." "Dear Santa Clause--I wish you would bring me a doll and a carriage and some candy and nuts. ROSE THURSTON, 1527 West Marshall street." "Dear Santa Claus--I wish you would please bring me a horn and a harp and some candy and nuts. ISHMAEL YATES, 1525 West Marshall street." I will send some more as soon as I can. My Great-Great-Grandfather was Lemuel H. WINDSOR. My sister and I are working on our family's genealogy. We first found our G-G-Grandfather, Lemuel; a sister (Jane Catharine WINDSOR [later married John LARCOMBE]); and a brother (William WINDSOR) in the 1850 Washington, DC, Census. They were living in a household with Martha LOMAX (head), Thomas LOMAX, and Margaret LOMAX. We do not know who Lemuel's parents were or where they were born. He, in most instances we have found, gave his own birthplace as Maryland but we have not been able to verify this. The story has been handed down to all of Lemuel's descendents (we heard this from our Grandfather, Charles Hugh WINDSOR, Jr., who was born in 1891 and died in 1985) that Lemuel's father and his father's brother came to the United States and first settled in Washington, DC. Since Lemuel always gave his birthplace as Maryland, we don't know how, where, or when the family got into Maryland So we don't know what the "real" story is. Lemuel was born on March 7, 1832, and died on May 27, 1914; he and his wife are buried in Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. Son John Henry, grandson Lemuel Henry, and great-grandson Henry Grigsby WINDSOR are all buried in Congressional Cemetery too. Lemuel named his children John Henry (1st born), Laura Virginia [GRAY], Robert James, Charles Hugh (Sr.), William L. [buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA, d. August 4, 1911], and Sarah (Sallie) Mary [EVANS]. We have tried to narrow down our search by looking for Lemuel WINDSOR's or Charles Hugh WINDSOR's as these names might offer some clues as to "kin". There are so many "John" and "Williams" WINDSOR's that we cannot determine anything unique. Any information you can give me will be GREATLY appreciated. (Please excuse me for such a long message. I was hoping to give a detail that would "ring a bell" with someone.) Thank you again, Betty
Hi all, I went back to the Letters from Santa which transcribed last year and am now placing on one of my websites, still editing though. I realized that the "News Leader" paper had them then too. I am sorry, as before I said it was the "Times-Dispatch" which had them in 1910 and I was wrong. Just wanted to set the record straight. Thank you. God bless, Beth [email protected]
