Does anyone know if there is a database for Virginia Land records like the BLM site? Need to see if ancestors bought land in Scott County in the early 1800's Pat
I am trying to determine if "Benkerse" is or was a town or locality of Virginia. I have recently located an item refering to an ancestor who was supposed to have been born in "Benkerse" , VA in 1767. Would appreciate any thought anyone has on this . Thanks Gene in TN

For those of you who may have an interest, I've just added three new pages, two are excerpts from old history books, the first below has some wonderful illustrations from the book, as well: History of Lancaster County, PA, from a book published in 1843: www.geocities.com/twincousin2334/Historical_PA_Collections History of the "Scotch-Irish" in Old Virginia and her Neighbors, from a book pub. in 1897: http://www.geocities.com/twincousin2334/Old_Virginia Old Pennsylvania Postcards www.geocities.com/twincousin2334/Pennsylvania_Postcards Nancy Brister, researching: Baldridge, Cain, Courtney, Curtis, Carmichael, Dawkins, Doty, Garmon, Garrett, Hanon, Jackson, McCormick, Matthews, Osborne, Sharp, Stampley, Stringer, Turrentine, Warren & more!
I am trying to find more information about John Augustus Brown. John Augustus Brown (caucasian) in 1920 was found in the Census of Albemarle Co., VA. In his household were Margaret E. Moon and Coleman D. Moon ("mulatto"). Perhaps Coleman is Margaret's son or brother? I hope someone can give me clues about these people. Thank you, Land H -- Facinated by Family Brown, Harris, Hamner, Herndon, Hendley, Norris, Land, Clarke, Laughton, Nimmo, Reid, Peebles, Lucas, Webb, Hart, Wilson, Gregory, Taylor, Osborn, Terry, LeGrand to name a few.
On my father's mother's side his grandfather was Thomas Harris Brown m. to Elizabeth Marshall Hamner. I have no information on the parents or siblings of Thomas Harris Brown(b. 3/25/1823 & d. 1/17/1910). New information: Thomas Harris Brown and Elizabeth Marchall Hamner were in the DeSoto Mississippi Census in 1870 and later returned to Albemarle Co VA. Does anyone know WHY??? My father did not know his aunts and uncles names and when the last relative died he let an auctioneer dispose of everything.....so frustrating! I would truely appreciate any help, information or suggestions to finding out more about my father's family, living and passed on!!!!, A. Land Harris
Dear Friends, I am trying to locate a way to get records about my grandmother who ended her life of considerable accomplishment at Westbrook Sanitarium in the early 1900's. Does anyone have any ideas how I can go about it? Thank you in advance for any thoughts you might have on the subject, Land H. -- Facinated by Family Brown, Harris, Hamner, Herndon, Hendley, Norris, Land, Clarke, Laughton, Nimmo, Reid, Peebles, Lucas, Webb, Hart, Wilson, Gregory, Taylor, Osborn, Terry, LeGrand to name a few.
Could some kind soul tell me where to find a bilbiography of histories of the EDWARDS families that have been produced. I am especially interested in the "early history of Virginia book" that I once had a look at and has since been "removed" from the library in Ohio...It was a blue softcovered book similiar to the GPO format...Perhaps that will jog someones memory banks... As I vaguely remember it contained a great deal in the beginning about Joseph EDWARDS, high sherrif and the passports he issued to leave virginia for "parts unknown"... cordially... Haven't done much research on the computer for the last 3 weeks....between the flu and Christmas. Here is all that my book says about Taliaferro's Mill: p. 302 of COLONIAL CAROLINE: A History of Caroline County, Virginia by T. E. Campbell: Title: Grants by Spotswood of less than 1,000 acres to favorites: (year) 1719: Harry Beverley, Grantee, received 831 acres on Peumandsend, beginning at the flood gate of Taliaferro's Mill, at the east end of mill-pond. Not much of a description, but that's the entry. In 1711, a LAWRENCE TALIAFERRO received 220 acres in the upper valley of Peumandsend. Perhaps he had something to do with Taliaferro's Mill. On page 17 of the same book, it has this information about the earliest patents: "March 17, 1673, Robert Taliaferro, the son of Robert Taliaferro, 739 acres on the south side of the Rappahannock River on both sides of the mouth of a creek known as Peumansend. (Evidently at this time all of Mill Creek was called Peumansend)." On page 47, it states..."With church and school firmly established, and one trading center flourishing about Taliaferro's warehouse at the mouth of Mill Creek, and another flourishing about Buckner's tobacco warehouse further up the Rappahanock, Caroline's Rappahannock alley had the essential elements to sustain a high order of society." Page 62...."John Taliaferro has the distinction of being the scion of the first family to reach the soil that is Caroline and produce a founding father. His first Caroline Taliafero ancestor patented 6,300 acres jointly with Lawrence Smith on the south side of the Rappahannock below Snow Creek in 1666......At one session of court a few years after Caroline became a county, three of the five sitting magistrates were Taliaferros. MUCH much more about the Taliaferros in this book....way too much to type out. There must be at least 30 different Taliaferro names with numerous entries for some of them. I highly recommend this book......I found mine on Amazon.com. Happy New Year. Hi all, Just a reminder of two of my websites: Miscellaneous Virginia Genealogy: http://vagenealogy.homestead.com/ and Old Virginia Obituaries, 1790-1940: http://virginiaobits.homestead.com/ Thank you. God bless, Beth [email protected]
For many years I have been searching for a John and Eliza Paul that lived in Virginia. John was born around 1790-1800 and Eliza born around 1800-1810. There first child, James Alexander, was born in Virginia after 1830. It is possible another child was also born there. If anyone has any information on Paul families in Virginia please contact me. They eventually moved to Tennessee but not sure where they lived there either. What route would most people take as they began to migrate? Is there any place in TN that people moved to in particular during the 1830's? Maybe these clues would give me an idea of where to start searching. Thank you.
