I'm new to this list. My surnames are(though very few with VA roots) Lathrop, Brigham, Chase, Keeler, Arkland, Lang, McCulloch,Rollo, Ehrke, Poggendorf, Murray, Hammond, Emery,Fried,Letson....just to name a few. I was hoping someone might have a copy of Cavaliers and Pioneers Vol 2 on hand. I am interested in the information on George Arkland and Mary Arckland(according to Ancestry.com) who arrived in Virginia 1684. This information is supposed to be on Page 274. If anyone can help with that, I would be entirely grateful. Thanks, Amy Lathrop Buffalo, NY
Does anyone know of a county that survived from the 1800 census in VA besides Louisa? I thought there was another one but can't remember what it is. June Byrne [email protected] or [email protected] Daytona Beach, FL
I found a great search site, the Virginia Heritage Database. It searches the manuscript and archival collections of various Virginia institutions, from about 1607 to the present. Search page: http://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaead/cgi-bin/eadform.pl One of the databases that's searched is the Imagebase of the VA Tech Library: http://imagebase.lib.vt.edu/browse.php They have some wonderful collections, if you enjoy vintage photos. A good map resource I just found, Historical Maps of Virginia: http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/historicalmaps/virginia/index.html Their homepage contains links to other states, as well. The first two links are to pages that are informative and very well done. The third link is a great find, if any of your ancestors happened to belong to a Primitive Baptist Church. Not all states are online, but the ones that are have a lot of detailed information. I found an entire extended family of one of my Illinois lines there! I hope they're helpful to some of you. The 1920 record shows Margaret Moon at age 30 and Coleman age 14 as servants. Margaret is listed as single. Your John A. Brown is 51. A mulatto "Margaret Moon" (age 69) and at least three mulatto Moon families are in Scottsville, Albemarle County in 1910. She has 3 grandsons with her -- Clarence (11), Conrad (7), and Hom___ (23). Next door is Fannie Moon (47), mother to Margaret (20) and John D. (18). This could be the Margaret that appears in John A. Brown's home 10 years later. And 3 doors down from them are James R. Moon (66), wife Mollie (58), James L (29), Mollie C (21), Carrie H. (17), and their grandchildren Viola (6), Burton (4), O__da_ (4), and Wa_eda (1). Several more grandchildren, with different surnames, are also living with them. Incidentally, enumerator was Jackson Beal, one-time Mayor, but no Brown on that page or immediately before or after. Looking further, didn't find any John Brown close to the right age living in Albemarle at 1910. Source: Series: T624 Roll: 1620 Page: 33 In 1930, John A. Brown is still found in Scottsville, age 62, in RFD Keene. Margaret is still in his household at age 41. Margaret is listed still as single. The only Coleman (J.) moon is listed as Black, age 30, living also in Scottsville. He is married to Emma C, age 40, and her children live with them. Clara L, age 15, and Horace, age 12. Does anyone have "Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, XVI (1908)"? I would really appreciate a lookup. It is my understanding that page 179-180 of the cited document deals with Revolutionary War pension declarations from Pittsylvania Co, VA. I am interested in the declarations of one David WADE, who claims to have served with Captain William Witcher. Your help would be appreciated. Thank you, Eldon
Hi everyone This week I uploaded 5 new obituaries. One was a man living in Virginia and one unknown. Two are sisters from Iowa and one has a funeral card with it. These sisters were born in Minnesota, lived in Missouri and died in Iowa. One was a man born in Germany living in Hartford Connecticut. I did some looking in census records and found a lot on the two families, I've added my notes to their information. See http://ancestorsatrest.com/obit_records/ I also uploaded 24 new funeral cards online. They are for people who lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, England, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and (unforunately) several from unknown locations in the USA. To see the list of all Funeral Cards with their birth and death information, go to http://ancestorsatrest.com/funeral_cards/ Coffin Plates - I managed to find and upload a few more, for folks in New Jersey and Vermont. Coffin Plates contain death and sometimes birth information, you can check these out at http://ancestorsatrest.com/coffin_plates/ If you want to search by location instead, you can start at http://ancestorsatrest.com/deaths_by_location.shtml Have fun and if you know where any of the 'unknown location' death records lived, just let me know and i will add that info to the pages Brian -- Ancestors at Rest http://AncestorsAtRest.com/ The Genealogy Spot http://www.TheGenealogySpot.com/

John Gore (Goare) came from England to Lancaster County, Virginia 1653 (Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1866 by George C. Greer, Cavaliers and pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and grants by Nell Marion Nugent) He was of indentured status to John Edwards who paied his transoceanic passage. On 16 Jan. 1568 he took out a patent for 150 acres located on the north side of the Peanketanke River as recorded in Lancaster County Patent Book, page 248. That part of Lancaster was used to form Middlesex County in 1673. So that part became part of Middlesex County. We thank that he married Margaret, his wife) after coming to America around 1658 after his indentured service. John died sometime between November 1669 and 1674, as we find that Margaret married in March 1674 to her second husband George Ransome, a widower. We assume that the first child would have come in 1659 an had come two years apart. 1661, 1663, 1665, 1667, 1669, and 1671. in that area. We know of Joseph and and Henry Gore (Goare). Does anyone know of these and any others, with information.
