THOMAS (b. abt 1811 - d. 6 May 1879) m. Elizabeth Lithgo WAITE (b. abt 1818 - d. abt 1903). William and Elizabeth reared 7 children in St. Clair County, IL. I have a detailed handwritten (in 1919) Thomas family history letter by my gr-grandfather indicating that William S. was 1 of 10 children of a Jesse (Thomas) and Betty (Smith) however, I believe this to be an error. While William S. was born in Virginia, a mortality document indicates William's parents were BOTH born in NORTH CAROLINA. I have been trying to find info on the parentage of this William S. Thomas for YEARS without success and so would greatly appreciate any information someone might have on Thomas families in VA - particularly if they find any William S's (I do not know what the middle initial "S" stands for) in their research. just a quick suggestion- search on the Bumeford name. Whenever I come across a middle name that looks like a surname (especially in the South!), that is usually a good place to start connecting to family or close connections. When you find Bumefords in the census, look around a few pages either way. Good luck! A. Joanne I thought if there is a place for births, marriages and deaths in VA I might be able to find Mary Jane. The 1830 VA census has Hezekiah Bailey as HOH. There is no male under 5, one under 10, one between 30-40 and one between 40-50. These are all males. The females are: one under 5, 1 between 10-15, and one bet. 20-30. I have the sheet only, and do not know who these people are. I will ask her where in VA this is. Is there a free BMD site for VA? Jackie
Jackie, I haven't had any luck so far, but just did a quick search of census returns trying to get familiar with this family. First a few questions: What do you mean by BMDs for Virginia? Who is the head of household in the 1830-1840 census returns? Are these census in MD? I notice in the 1850 census there are 3-4 Bailey families all in a row. Have to assume they are related. H. Bailey 51 living with Charity Busey 63 seems to be the oldest... maybe old enough to be the father of the other Bailey men? Impossible to guess at the relationship, unless Charity had also been a Bailey??? (I'm kinda thinking "out loud", so to speak.) I had no luck so far locating any of the Perkins siblings in 1860+, but noticed that the ancestry.com census index is leaving out a lot of names. I'm going to try census images on another site. Obvious guess --which only means it's a clue to follow, and NOT any solid assumption-- is that the Perkin's siblings parents both died and that possibly their mother was a Bailey, OR, they were visiting Bailey relatives. Curious that according to the 1850 census, Mary J. was the only Perkins born in VA, and that John Bailey age 39 (next household) was also born in VA. Oops, just took a better look and I think maybe the census transcriber made a mistake. Looks more like John Bailey was b. in Pennsylvania. Will let you know if I ever find anything that might be helpful to you. Joanne "J. Davidson" <fredjacqueline@bellsouth.net> wrote: Joanne, Mary Jane's name comes from my grandfather's book on Lehmans, and I have her picture too. She was the 2 year old in 1840. Joanne, Mary Jane's name comes from my grandfather's book on Lehmans, and I have her picture too. She was the 2 year old in 1840.
