Marlaina, If you are getting a scanner you will need one that can scan transparencies in order to make your slides or negatives viewable to turn into jpg format. They are also some companies that will convert the slides over for you for a fee. Most of these charge so much per slide, and depending on how many you have and the cost they charge could be the difference in letting someone else do them or paying the higher cost for the scanner that will let you do it yourself. Hope this helps you in some way. Join Now! Subscribe: KYHeritageFolklore-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Terry Thacker Doing genealogy is like writing OUR own family Bible. Our ancestors are the ones that have came to pass, and our descendants are the ones to fulfill it.
I have a Hewlett Packaard scanner "ScanJet 5370C" I can scan 4 slides at a time. Works great. I paid $299.00 for it last year. I have over 2000 family slides to get done before Christmas. Scan-cleanup, burn to CD, play on DVD player and lastly copy onto VHS. Most of my older relatives won't consider switching to a DVD player. As for darkroom work - I have never heard of anyone who could do more than 2 or 3 large format negatives - to paper in an hour. It's standup work and is slow. and many of the do-it-yourselp places do not have the equipment to do the old 620 or bigger film. Most of the colleges do and will let an experienced alumni use their facilities. If not experienced --- students will do the work for much less than a commercial lab.
