    3. To all who wrote to help, the photo in question is approx. 3" x 2" oval picture on a piece of cardboard backing about the size of a postcard. The picture medallion is on my Ggrandfather's collar and is approx. 1/8" x 1/8". I have scanned w/high resolution and enlarged, but it just blurs beyond recognition, my nephew (computer whiz) even took several pictures changing light, distance, etc. with a digital camera connected to computer and then tried to enhance , still no luck. I do not believe that a studio/lab could do any better, but am willing to try. Mickey, I will have nephew scan and send to you. Thanks all. S

    3. If you can't see anything discernible from the high resolution scan, there would be no further detail there that a lab would produce either. It has probably been taken with a camera equipped with a low level lens. 3. Hi Steve Is that pic raised, or flat? If it was raised then you could try rubbing it onto paper? Then you could take a photo of your rubbing? Just an idea. :) I've got a very old, and almost not there dark sepia photo of a mystery female, and couldn't actually see much of her face, apart from what looked like a white band across her forehead, which might have been imagination on my part...so got my scanner as a last resort and scanned one pic, then spent hours fiddling around with light and dark tones. In the end, I lightened the background to as light as it could go, and her face became visible enough to see what she looked like, and saw her beads, which could be pearls, around the top of her forehead. She was standing in bushes, so it didn't matter if they vanished.....but, she can't be made any clearer, then I saved her and printed her out using photo paper. She could be a family member for all I know....but, do you or anyone know if wearing beads across the forehead was a fashion statement, or did it signify one's station in life? She's the only one in the pix wearing beads. Thanks for any info. :) Cheers Dig

    3. I am new to the list also, but I did see the orig. post on this subject. I joined the list to learn, as I don't know much about the subject. But I do think what the person said was true about enlarging areas of an old photograph. I enlarged several old photographs to identify pictures hanging on walls, jewelry, etc. On outdoor photographs we could identify chicken coops and other outbuildings that were not visible in the photo in hand. However, there must be a difference in scanners. I took my old scanner to the attic. Our new scanner is a copier/scanner/printer combination. I like it, but I cannot enlarge the photographs the way I used to with the old scanner. It just seems the pictures I scan are not the quality as with the old scanner. Lori >

    3. Steve: I just joined the list. I don't really know what you are talking about, as I must have missed your e-mail, but I had a pic of my grandmother with my mother-when mom was just a baby. The picture was damaged, but the studio I took it to was able to enlarge the part of the photo which showed my mother (very small) and it turned out wonderfully! It is the only picture she has of herself as a baby. I paid quite a bit to have this done, but it was well worth it! 3. Steve, if you have a scanner (or a friend with one), scan the photo at a very high resolution. Then view it in a good photo editing program. You can then use the VIEW|ZOOM feature to enlarge the medallion. You will be surprised just what clarity those old cameras were capable of. I have done similar things with old photos, and found some interesting features that are not visible to a casual view of the original. Lance **** For PAF 5 users, join us at Yahoo!Groups. In fact I've only found two, both American: Ohio Photographers 1839-1900 by Diane Vanskiver Gagel ISBN 1887694072 and Directory of Pennsylvania Photographers 1839-1900 by Linda Ries ISBN 0892710845. Susanna, although there aren't many of these types of collections, I think you'll find more than two <g>. One very useful one for Maryland, specifically for Baltimore City is Ross J. Kelbaugh's, "Directory of Maryland Photographers 1839-1900" Historic Graphics Press, 1988 (ISBN 0-914931-00-8). He's had an update plus a supplement published as well. Kelbaugh's Directory serves as the basis for citing dates for many of the photos on my web site, "Baltimore City Nineteenth-Century Photos" which can be accessed at http://freepages.hobbies.rootsweb.com/~ruppert Mr Kelbaugh also has a web page which you'll find listed on my Links. Possible other useful links for researchers: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~liverpoolphotographers/ The above link is to a list of Liverpool and Wirral Photographic Studios taken from trade directories 19th-20th century. http://victorian.fortunecity.com/carroll/642/index.htm The above link is to a private collector's page who lists the studios of his carte-de-visites along with an approximate date of the photographs - Archive of Cartes: Photographers A-Z. As far as I'm aware books supplying details of vintage photographic studios are a rarity, which is a shame because it saves trawling through trade directories trying to date specific photographs! In fact I've only found two, both American: Ohio Photographers 1839-1900 by Diane Vanskiver Gagel ISBN 1887694072 and Directory of Pennsylvania Photographers 1839-1900 by Linda Ries ISBN 0892710845. I haven't read/seen either book so I'm afraid I can't recommend them although I can commend the authors for writing them <grin> Susana --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
