Ms. Gagel, I did not imply that I wanted folks to copy entire reference books to a web site. I thought it might be nice to find out who has reference books for each area for private look-ups. When I do give folks any information, I always quote the source. Bill Christen -- gwjchris@rust.net Visit our web site, "The Curiosity Shop" http://www.rust.net/~gwjchris/
A first cousin was married to the town's studio photographer who took family portraits in the 1890s. He may have taken the family group lined up in 1895 and the family home in eastern Canada. Relative took his second picture in August 1898 and sent his brother a copy on a cardboard mount. A few snapshots were taken in 1909 after the father of a family moved west. Those are probably contact prints, not mounted. Don't know who owned the cameras. Grandparents had a camera before their 1913 honeymoon. Several young female relatives in different households owned cameras in the middle 1920s showing young people in the city, people and animals on the farm, country school students and neighbors. One of those was a young student's prize at a country fair. Elizabeth in Canada ----- Original Message ----- > Could someone tell me when people started using cameras for home use? Hi, I am the author of the Ohio book on Photographers. I have read the recent postings and feel the need to remind everyone that although it is fine to do look ups from books you may have, it is not ok to post anything on the net from a copyrighted source. FYI, there is a book on Pennsylvania photographers now as well. In my second book, Windows on the Past, I have a chapter on sources for photographer directories, published and unpublished for each state and Canada as well as guidelines on researching photographers. Good luck in your research. Diane Gagel

This is not easy to answer, particularly if the photographer was in another part of the world. Photos did travel!! I have not seen a website that is an index of indexes and I think one would be useful. So I'm thinking about putting the material I have onto a website and asking everyone to add to it. The site would be simple, along the lines "If you know the photographer came from Edinburgh, Scotland, here are the websites to visit and the books to check". Perhaps a start would be for us to list our own photography index sources so we could do look ups. I have Ohio, Arizona, and the entire Ross Kelbaugh series, as well as Darrah. I haven't seen anything like what you are proposing. I usually turn to Photographers: A Sourcebook for Historical Research edited by Peter Palmquist for print sources. You have a great idea! Hello all. I am considering upgrading from my now rather old HP scanjet 4C scanner. I am looking again at HP and am torn between the 7400c and the 5470c. Does anyone on the list have any observations about the pros and cons of these two devices please? Regards. Mike James Berkshire, UK

Dear List Members, It is that time of year again when we suddenly will have an influx of new online genealogy enthusiasts with their holiday gift computers that are usually newer and faster than what many of the rest of us have. For a great many of them, it will be their first time online. Some of them will make mistakes and some may (will) unintentionally do things and write things that may be irritating to us and against what we have set up as our list rules. Please take this into consideration in advance and be helpful to them. If things get out of hand, know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problems. Just remember, one of these new members might hold the clue you have been searching for. Let us not discourage them before they have a chance to learn how this works. I would like also to take this time to wish each of you and yours a wonderful and safe Holiday Season. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

I apologize for the mistake in camera numbers. I have a Coolpix 990, not a Coolpix 900. I think the '900 has a resolution of 1280x960 pixels and the '990 has a resolution of 2048x1536. I do not know if the slide adapter will work with the Coolpix 900 and even if it did, I don't think the resolution would be acceptable for microfilm imaging but might be adequate for some slide and negative copying. The '990 is generally acceptable for 35mm microfilm imaging, but there are always cases where you would like more resolution. I think the latest Coolpix model is the '995 which fixes red eye and other idiosyncracies of the '990 -Dean

I'm currently using an HP Scanjet 5100C (no adaptor). Linda, The results are passable to good but I haven't quantified anything by a real test. I did make a template for the scanner to put microfilm through and this resulted in acceptable results but far from spectacular. What works better for me is using a digital camera. I have a Nikon Coolpix 900 camera with a slide adapter. It can image slides and negatives. I rigged up a portable contraption so that I can image microfilm with the camera by using handles from my microfilm reader and a small 4x6 transparency viewer backlight. If I get a chance in the next few days, I might do a test to compare the various methods. BTW, I hadn't thought about the idea of imaging contact prints and saving printouts with the negatives. This is a good idea, and the Epson scanner does give passable results without using the backlight for contact image sizes (cover must be closed). Dean http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcgee/

I don't have to do anything other than lay the negatives on the glass and scan like I would any other photo and then change the scan to a negative image in my PSP graphics program.
