I remember seeing a tombstone in the Farnam, NE cemetery that my Dad pointed out to me years ago. He looked up that grave site because he was fascinated with the picture of a young lady on the marker. He said that it had been there since he was a young boy (he is now 88 yr) and always wondered how it stayed so bright and clear. How do they do that? Hope someone can come up with the answer to not only this, but also Kathy's question. Sharon

    2. Hello everyone, I don't know where I can ask this question, but thought someone here might be able to help. My FIL wants to seal up a picture of my MIL in the entombment (correct word?) area with her so that if it's ever opened up again people will know what she looked like. He wants the picture to last a very long time and would like to know how to preserve the picture for entombment? I don't think I've run across this topic before. So any help would be much appreciated. Thank you, Kathy

    1. [VINTAGE-PHOTOS] Photos, Tintypes and Thanks
    2. Thanks to everyone who responded to my email for help. I used several of the websites and was able to gain some new information as to the dating of the photos. There is no information about working with tintypes so I assume the only option is a digitized image. I will not bother with getting that done as these are sadly 3 unidentified men. One I have a suspicion but will never know for certain. So there is no justification for the expense at this point in time. Thank you again to everyone for their suggestions of websites - what a wealth of information. Jo Hogle

    2. Thomas H F Kidman
    3. Fraser, can you please enlighten us on your planned website? Will it be a directory of studios? Will it be searchable? Will it only cover one geographic area? When do you hope to have it running? What will be the url? If you can set up a database searchable by studio name/place/date it would no doubt be welcomed by most listers and I think we would then owe it to you to gather what information we can from our own local public libraries for inclusion. Pat Sadataki Pat, One should use this book with some caution. My wife and I have had several discussion with Joan Severa about her clothing dating and some of her descriptions. She readily admits that she is not a clothing expert, but is only collector of photographs. The pictures are great to look at. Bill Christen -- gwjchris@earthlink.net

    1. [VINTAGE-PHOTOS] Tintypes
    2. I have 3 small tintypes - slightly smaller than 2 1/2 by 3 /12. On of them is still fairly light and very interesting. The man is dressed in some sort of fur coat and has a hat on that together is reminiscent of pictures of the men during the "flapper era" with the raccoon coats and floppy brimmed hats. But I know this is older than that. It is shellacked like the other 2 and the color on the back is the same. The other 2 tintypes are much darker. Is there any way of lightening them or cleaning the surface? One had been in an oval frame and has markings from the frame and matting. I would also like to know if there is someway of dating them. When were tintypes likely to have been used? These 3 men are unidentified but given the fact that they were in family papers and a family photo album I must assume they were family. If I could date them in some way it would give me a good indication of who they might be given the family they came from. Thanks for any help. I am totally lacking in knowledge about photographs. Also... does anyone know of a website that might be helpful in dating photos based on styles of clothing? thanks for any help. Jo Hogle

Have lots and need help with people and places1 thanks! Generally, CdVs and sometimes CCs will have the name and address of the photographer. If you have that information, you can consult a city directory or census records. There are several state-specific directories of photographers that are available. Using the characteristics of the photographic mounting, the type of photograph, the pose and the clothing of the subject a good estimate of the age of the photograph can be made. I guess we need to know what format the photographs are and exactly what information is on them to be of greater help. Bill Christen -- gwjchris@earthlink.net
