    1. Re: [VINTAGE-PHOTOS] Website for finding photographers
    2. Some of my online friends and I have a large number of old family photos from Nebraska and Germany. We have made quite a bit of progress identifying many of them over the last couple of years. I do think that your website is great. It must have taken a great deal of effort to get it to the point where you are now. Congratulations and thank you for taking on this project. You may want to add links to a couple of websites that I have found helpful for pictures from Nebraska. A list of early Nebraska photographers can be found at: >http://www.rootsweb.com/~neresour/ancestors/photogindx.html< This is a page sponsored by NEGenWeb Project. The Hutchings Photo Railroad Car is featured at: >http://www.rootsweb.com/~nerailrd/photocar.html<. I also recommend Maureen Taylor's books on photography. I am just getting into a book written by Maureen Taylor called "Uncovering Your Ancestry through Family Photographs" it is very helpful. Are you interested in adding links to collections of unidentified photos? I would be glad to have my collection added to that list if you do. I have bookmarked your new site and look forward to watching your progress. Thanks, Sharon McKenzie

    3. Last March I had indicated to the group that I would attempt to set up a website to reference other sites and books that would help in finding when and where a particular photographer worked. I now have that site, or at least the beginnings of it. It is a very large subject!! I put the site up yesterday and I would be happy to have group members comment on it. If many of you say "Yuk", I'll pull it. If many of you think it has the potential to be useful, then I'll get a decent URL for it and start promoting it. <http://FindingPhotographers.homestead.com/files/FF- FindingPhotographers.htm>. That unfortunately is a two line URL. I'm still checking for broken links, but if you find any let me know. I'd appreciate other links that should go in. A few of you contributed links last spring but most of them came from a search using Google and many hours in the Toronto Reference Library. It is not my purpose to provide actual data on this site (I prefer to link to the sites with the data) however if any of you have small databases and no site, I do have some room. Comments please!

    1. Re: [VINTAGE-PHOTOS] Sites - Identify & Conserve or Preserve
    2. Lisa & Others... The AIC has a wonderful site to aid in the search for conservators of cultural artifacts. Many good tips, facts, FAQs and links, too. They include a free referral service, if you should seek a reputable professional near you. American Institute for Conservation Home Page http://aic.stanford.edu/ Barbara & Others... City-Gallery has some wonderful aids to help identify photos. I've seen a lot of sites to this subject, but this one seemed far better prepared and had good links to further your research on this and related topics. City-Gallery.com - Popular History of Photography and Family History http://www.city-gallery.com/ I agree with Diane, that it may be wise to post them on a site, where more variety of opinions could be obtained, and where more security minded folk would be likely to view and try to help. 2. I'm not sure how much I can help, Barbara, but I'd like to take a look. Why don't you post the photos somewhere online so everyone can look at them and help more easily and safely? Then you only have to give out the web address. Have you tried doing a search through http://www.google.com/ for "old glass photograph" or perhaps "old tin photograph" or "dating old photographs"? Now, if you use the reverse, and place the photo in the freezer and let it get cold the photo will become loose from the glass. Word of caution: You will have to work rather fast to remove the photo without letting the glass start to sweat. Lay the glass on a towel to absorb the condensation as the photo is being removed. Hope this helps you get the photo off the glass that you are working on. I would like to say that not all photos will come loose by using this method due to not all photos are stuck in the same way. 3. I just returned from picking up a large picture being repaired. An 1878 picture that had been damaged by a tear across the face. The point I am making is that I took it to a professional photograph repair person. When I explained your situation to him, his first words were STOP, STOP, AND STOP. The reason he gave was that if the picture has been stuck to the glass over a period of time it will be next to impossible to remove it without totally damaging the original picture. Another solution he stated was to take the picture to a professional photographer who deals with this type of work and see if a negative can be made from the picture thought the glass. It will be difficult but if not to much damage has occurred it can be done. Hate to give a negative answer to your problem but, he stated, that this type of damage of the picture stuck on the glass is next to impossible to correct, without damaging the picture beyond repair. He did not encourage the use of water. Sorry I can not be of more help. Just be cautious as you are working with the picture. 1. [VINTAGE-PHOTOS] From List Mom - 2nd Quarterly Report - 2002
    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, Here it is the first of July and I am late in sending you the Second Quarterly Report. I was in Maryland and Delaware enjoying three of my children their spouses and five of my grandchildren for the 4th of July. Due to the lateness of this report I am not going to send the individual numbers of members for each of the lists I take care of. It is an all day job. If any of you really want to know how many are on your list, just e-mail me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net and ask. Be sure and let me know what list you are asking about. If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller’s Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. If someone posts a message to the list that should not have been posted, please just delete it. Know that I am taking care of the problem. If you post your unhappiness, then you just continue on the problem. I know it is hard when your heart has been offended, but for my sake, and the sake of the list, please just delete it. Rootsweb has a wonderful Spam Detective and it stops most of it. You should see what comes across my screen. I have to look at each of them to make sure that what was stopped was truly Spam. Once in a while, one slips by though and if this happens, just delete it and go on with what we all love, genealogical research. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 4. The wonderful relationship that develops between list members is also one of a Mailing Lists Problems. I encourage you to respond to the entire list with genealogical responses, you never know who your response will help. In the same thought I would like to ask you to not respond to the entire list with personal responses. Such as, the first message from a member says "Happy Birthday Mary" and then Mary says "Thank you” and then about 60 of our members also send "Happy Birthday Mary". This is what I mean by personal messages. Just keep in mind anything is ok to be posted as long as it has to do with the subject of the list. I know there are exceptions to most rules including this one. If you have a doubt ask me. KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting, something I have done or not done. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. 3. I have about 300 3" X 5" negatives from the time period 1920 to about 1940. I would like to make multiple copies of most of them. Someone told me that I could do this myself at a photo lab. I have never done developing before. Has anyone heard about places where you can learn to do your own developing? Does anyone know what it costs? If not, does anyone have ideas on the best way and most economical way to obtain long lasting copies from these negatives? Thank you! Phyllis
