    1. [VINTAGE-PHOTOS] Re: Website for finding photographers
    2. What a great idea!!! I think many of us have been in the sitution where we have old photos and not much more information to go on. I've been combing through my home town directories and gazetteers for info on photographers to see when they were in business to see if that would help narrow the timeframe during which the photograph was taken. I decided recently to put the analysis I've done on my website. It only covers a very small geographical area compared to the world but perhaps it will help someone else. I haven't put up all the info yet (everything in my life seems to be a 'work in progress' <g>) but if you want to add a link on your page to the photographers section of my site, that would be great. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tracefamilytree/locales/Kansas/Kansas .html#PHOTOGRAPHY Thanks for all your efforts, Susie _____________________________________________________ S u s a n H a s t i n g s **** Surnames: H A S T I N G S ~ W E L L S praeda@aol.com The "other" OZ, USA > X-Message: #1 > Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 16:42:05 -0500 > From: "Fraser Dunford" <fraser.dunford@sympatico.ca> > To: VINTAGE-PHOTOS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [VINTAGE-PHOTOS] Website for finding photographers > > Last March I had indicated to the group that I would attempt to > set up a website to reference other sites and books that would help > in finding when and where a particular photographer worked. > I now have that site, or at least the beginnings of it. 1. Re: [VINTAGE-PHOTOS] Looking for Information from a Post Card Photo
    2. Marlaina, In the period from about 1910 to 1925 cameras were sold that took a postcard-sized image, and photographers provided prints on postcard stock, so there are many personal snapshot images from that period. Mass produced postcards were often photomechanical prints, usually lithographs. Just a little added info that you might want to keep for your research. Hope this helps you in some way. Join Now! 3. I have a Hewlett Packaard scanner "ScanJet 5370C" I can scan 4 slides at a time. Works great. I paid $299.00 for it last year. I have over 2000 family slides to get done before Christmas. Scan-cleanup, burn to CD, play on DVD player and lastly copy onto VHS. Most of my older relatives won't consider switching to a DVD player. As for darkroom work - I have never heard of anyone who could do more than 2 or 3 large format negatives - to paper in an hour. It's standup work and is slow. and many of the do-it-yourselp places do not have the equipment to do the old 620 or bigger film. Most of the colleges do and will let an experienced alumni use their facilities. If not experienced --- students will do the work for much less than a commercial lab. They were in business as early as 1907, but their address was 1039 Central Ave. up until 1914. 2. Marlaina Barr
    3. Hello Listers, I am hoping to find a time period when a Photo Post Card might have been made. On the back of the photo of my g.grandfather, Walter McKnight is a printed Post Card: Rensler's (this is the company name) 527-29 Central Ave. Cincinnati, O This ggrandfather left shortly after my grandmother was born to parts unknown. I have no idea where he was from or where he went after the marraige. All I have is this post card of him. It was never posted or mailed so he must have given it to her or his wife at some time. He would have been born somewhere around 1900 (-10 years possible) and he is an adult in the Post Card. The post card looks pretty old to me, and I'm 50. Would anyone know the time period these kind of photo post cards were made? Thank You Marlaina Fritz-Barr __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 2. Marlaina, If you are getting a scanner you will need one that can scan transparencies in order to make your slides or negatives viewable to turn into jpg format. They are also some companies that will convert the slides over for you for a fee. Most of these charge so much per slide, and depending on how many you have and the cost they charge could be the difference in letting someone else do them or paying the higher cost for the scanner that will let you do it yourself. 3. Best is a specialized slide scanner that takes several in a holder at one time with software to adjust color and contrast. Much slower to use an older or less expensive film/slide scanner that takes one slide at a time. Poorest method is scanning expensive snapshots printed from slides. A good slide/film scanner allows a full page color printout from a slide or film that has a mountain in bright sun and people in the shade hardly showing any detail. 2. Phyllis Garratt
    3. I never did receive any replies to my query, although a number of folks asked me to share what I found out, so there is definite interest in the subject. Do-it-yourself photo labs do exist. In my area (Northern California) there are several. The one I chose (called The Darkroom) will teach me how to make photos from my negatives from the 1920's & 1930's for about $15. The lesson takes 1/2 hour. Use of the darkroom (chemicals etc.) is $10 per hour. Paper is 40 cents per sheet. He said it does not take long to learn to do it well and it is possible to do 40 or so negatives per hour (I have several hundred). He said that first I should make a positive so that I can see if the photo is worth making copies of. This is a heck of a lot cheaper than any of the custom developers I spoke with. They averaged $5 per 1 photo! Phyllis Gessert Garratt

    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, With so many of you changing e-mail address I figured it was time to send instructions as to how to remove yourself from one address and then subscribe again with the new one. I have over 50 messages asking me to do this for members. If you know in advance that your e-mail address is going to change go to Password Central http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ ask for a list of all the Mailing Lists you are subscribed to. Don't forget to submit your request at the bottom of the page. When you get your e-mail in about 1 minute you need to print it out so you know what lists you belonged to so you can re-subscribe. From the e-mail you can unsubscribe yourself from any or all of the mailing lists. or Just send the word UNSUBSCRIBE to NAMEOFLIST-L-@ROOTSWEB.COM (Change NAMEOFLIST to the name of the list and change L to D if you are on the Digest List) When you are ready to re-subscribe all you need to do is send the word SUBSCRIBE to NAMEOFLIST-L-@ROOTSWEB.COM (Change NAMEOFLIST to the name of the list and change L to D if you want to subscribe to the Digest List.) If you loose your e-mail address and are unable to unsubscribe yourself, then let me know and I will help. You can re-subscribe yourself to the list with the above instructions. I appreciate your help and thank each of you for helping to make our list the success it is.

    3. Joy, the URL is broken, which is a common problem with long ones in e-mail messages. Open the message. Click on EDIT|EDIT MESSAGE (or whatever you may have that is similar). Then place your cursor at the end of the highlighted part of the URL, and press DELETE. This will bring the bit below (in normal type) up to the end of the highlighted URL, and you will see it all become highlighted, ending with "html". Then click on the newly highlighted URL and it will open where it should. 2. Fraser: Just a few comments. First, I suppose I'm flattered that you have "borrowed" my background from Baltimore City 19th-Century Photos <http://freepages.hobbies.rootsweb.com/~ruppert/>. It was one I created myself, and although I certainly wouldn't have objected if you had asked to use it, I was surprised to find it in use on your new site. Secondly, if you're going to use this background, I have found that it is preferable to employ a heavier style font, as it is difficult to otherwise read the text. I have always used Bangle in bolded format on the Baltimore City 19th-Century Photos site. You have a lot of useful info included, however the opening page is a little "dense" ... just a bit too many words. I'd condense it or reformat it to break it up a bit. Thanks for the reference to my site. Gary B.
