X-Envelope-To: VICK-L X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 Thought I was finished with this, but maybe not. Perhaps we should use this controversy in a positive manner! Jeff, you said: ".................... my copy of the constitution does not contain a clause permitting states to seceed from the union at will,................" Won't quibble about your spelling, but have you read Amendment X, which states: " The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Simple and clear, although most people can't (or won't) accept it as fact. Hope you are not one of those. Now, since NOWHERE in the Constitution does it say "The States have NO rights to withdraw or secede from the Union", the right is inherent! You say further: "......As a southern it hurts me to state that I believe those that participated in the Confederacy to be in open rebellion and therefore traitors. Just as much as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and our founding fathers were traitors to their country (which we forget was Great Britain).............." At least you group the 'southerns' of the Confederacy with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc. You must be referring to Article III, Section 3, which states: " Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted." You're on better ground here, but how can States and/or individuals be treasonous unless they are still part of the Union? If they have seceded from the Union, no Treason could or would attain! By the way, if your apology included me, apology accepted. If not, meet me at high noon LAST Thursday on Mars. - Wet Noodles at 20 paces. Maybe Jim could supply the noodles. Welcome your comments on the above! Please lets just KEEP IT CIVIL! Jack Landers --------------1B0719C8547B5AFD0D4762DB--
