It seems as if people are dropping like flies right now. As some of you know Jim was the eldest son of my 1st cousin Darrell Vick, who died last April in Garland, TX. His sister, Sharon died less than a month earlier in March of 1999. DiAnn did a beautiful article about them and Huntingtons Disease in the Vick Newsletter. We were also notified earlier today that my Mom's sister's condition has worsened and they do not expect her to live much longer. She has been suffering from cancer in the lymph nodes and it has now spread to her liver. She is Rosa Lee (Vick) Akridge. She lives in Tampa, FL. She was born 19 Feb 1921. She is the fifth child of Mary Jane (Cannon) and Connie Rad Vick.
The following obituary appeared in this mornings Dallas Morning News: "Vick, Jr., James D., 33 of Garland passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2000 in a Galveston Hospital following Huntington;s Disease. James was born on May 2, 1966 in St. Petersburg, FL to Patricia and James Vick Sr. Survivors include Mother: Patricia Vick, Sister: Elizabeth Grant, Son: Cameron Vick, two daughters: Krystal and Kari Vick, Grandmother: Kay Kasokowski, preceded in death by Father: James D. Vick who also passed away from Huntington's Disease....private memorial service will be held and the family will be receiving friends at the residence on March 18 at 2:00........"

Amen, Jim. I, also, started my family genealogy six months ago and through the help of some of my family members and you good people I know more about my family than I ever hoped to know at this point. I thank you, too. Vicki Sellers
Vicki -- This is poor old Di Ann who has grown weary discussing the origins and problems with "our" Joseph marrying Margery Russell. I wrote a piece on this subject for the Vick Family Newsletter and if you will contact me privately (davick@bellatlantic.net) with your snail mail address I will send you a copy of the article. Good morning, I want to take this opportunity to let all of you know that just six months ago I was just about total ignorant about my family history. Then came along my cousin Norene Weigl and other angles like her and enlightened me. In this short time I have accumulated quite a large file and learned a fast amount about my Vick heritage. I must give credit to the JVFOA Assn for their help. People like Di Ann Vick, and close members of my family have been so very helpful. And I don't want to forget that wonderful lady Vickie Everhart on Us Mississippians she has come through with information I would not have otherwise. Others have been very helpful but I'm sure I owe the most gratitude to these outstanding people. Norene must be some kind of an angle, she has brought together on the net cousins 40-50-60-and 70 years old who never knew each other before. Again I wish to express my sincere gratitude and thanks for your outstanding support and help. Jim Vick Verona, Italy
We have a new author in the Vick family. Bill Mays (son of Mary Vick Mays; greatgrandson of Samuel and Drucilla Neal Vick of Russellville AR and Lebanon TN) has penned the tome "Behind the Scenes in Hospitals: Life and Times of Bill Mays". The book in the words of Alan Peppard of the Dallas Morning News (3/6/2000): "....is a look back at his 45 years as a hospital administrator, the last 25 at Presbyterian. As a community-relations specialist for Presby, he is the friendly face whom much of Dallas has come to depend on when they check into the hospital on Walnut Hill Lane. In his book, he recounts his dealings with famous and not-so-famous patients such as actress Greer Garson (she spent the last three years of her life in a ninth-floor suite at Presbyterian) and members of Dallas Perot, Zale, Wynne, Murchison, Thompson and Cox families. You can get your copy by calling Bill's office at 214-345-7065." I understand from another local cousin who attended the book signing party that the proceeds of sales will go to charity. suzanne g
God bless you Jim and God bless the souls and the families of all our fallen soldiers of any war and of any creed and color. suz
Di Ann, I know people like me should not jump in to prime time genealogy, and this may have been discussed before. I can imagine me having an original thought during tax season. Is it possible that Lucy Council was Joseph's daughter? If he lost his wife at the birth of Lucy, he would not have a daycare around the corner. The giving of 50 acres by Hodges Council is something hard for me to comprehend. I know that sometimes in our day land is leased free with guaranteed improvements as collateral. This would be a logical explanation to improve the value of the land before Lucy received it. However, the close bond with the Councils seems to establish a better bond that many Vick's had with other Vick's. The only explanation for the trust of wills and deeds between these to families seems to be the common "Lucy" name. Since there is only a 6-year difference in the estimated Lucy's births, an adoption would be a possibility. Before I continue, I will send this directly to you and you can decide if you would like to discuss this with the list, or you can reply with an understood "no way" and I will accept your more educated judgment. God Bless, Bob - K Our daughter Kayla is adopted so the reason for the possibly clouded judgment. -----Original Message----- From: Di Ann Vick [mailto:davick@bellatlantic.net] Sent: March 14, 2000 10:19 To: VICK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VICK-L] Apology Jim -- I've made the same mistake. Right on, Jim! Last I heard, each of us had the same rights to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" regardless of whether we were black, blue, purple, green or white. I expect every ex-service man will agree with that, too. Dear Jim and List, Sorry for my goof in sending Jim's message to the list.....I wasn't paying attention obviously!! :-) Doris
David, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy in your recent loss....you are in our thoughts and prayers. Doris Moore djmoore@nb.net
Jim, I don't know who it is and would rather not know if the problem has been resolved!! If you should have any problems with flaming in the future, please feel free to contact me or Linda. I would hope this person has learned that such things will not be tolerated. I was born and raised in Texas and lived side by side with Mexicans and their culture for several years and hopefully it helped me to become more tolerant than I might otherwise have been. We lived on the border for awhile and the whites were in the minority....only about 1/4 of the general population so we were the "outsiders". Thanks for your good work in posting Vick info for the rest of us. Hello, I only found four Vick's listed on the Memorial Wall. Another name I was looking for whom I heard was killed in Vietnam is Kenneth Laycox who was the son of Ellen Vick Laycox but I did not find his name. Has anyone checked the names on the Wall? Jim Vick
