Hello List, I am beginning to get quite desperate for someone to do a little genealogy work for me in the Lufkin, TX area. I am willing to pay as long as it don't cost me what it would cost to send a representative from Verona, Italy. I would like for someone who lives in or near Lufkin, Texas to check with the mortuary for information about my grandparents J. H. Arthur and Dora Ellen Massey Arthur. Then search the 5 or 6 cemeteries in the Lufkin area for the place any Arthur or Vick is buried and take a picture of the tombstone. Please respond to: vick29@iol.it Jim Vick Verona, Italy
Tuesday April 4 12:12 PM ET Gene Test Helps Scientist Trace Family Names By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Curious about your noble forebears? Eager to see if you are related to someone else with the same last name? An Oxford genetics professor can answer your questions. Brian Sykes, an expert in genetics at Britain's Oxford University, said on Tuesday he had checked the DNA of dozens of men who had the same surname and found, to his surprise, that they all seem to have descended from the same ancestor. Examining men with the same surname as his own, Sykes used a technique known as genetic fingerprinting to examine the men's Y chromosome, which is handed down with very little change from father to son. ``I wrote 250 men, a random sample, with the same surname and I wrote to Sykeses because I felt confident approaching people with the same name as mine,'' Sykes said in a telephone interview. He tracked the men down in three English counties known to have many people with the Sykes name -- York, Cheshire and Lancashire. He sent them home DNA kits that included a brush to take a few cells from the inside of the mouth. ``I got 61 returns of DNA on little brushes and of those, half had a Y chromosome microsatellite fingerprint which showed they had exactly the same Y chromosome,'' Sykes said. Microsatellites are little repeated sequences of the four nucleotides -- A, C, T and G -- that seem to carry no important genetic instructions but which can be used as ``fingerprints'' to identify genes. Sykes, who reported his findings in the American Journal of Human Genetics, said he was surprised to find the same fingerprint in so many different men who had no idea they were related. ``The only explanation is all Sykeses had come from a single male who first inherited that name,'' he said. ``We reckon from the court records the name first appears in West Yorkshire in just about 1300.'' Before then, most English peasants went by just one name or had names they did not pass on to their children. ``Surnames became inherited because it was a time you were able to transfer the tenancy of your land to your children,'' Sykes said. He had not expected such a pedigree for his name, in particular, which seems to have had few noble associations. ``Sykeses were all peasants and vagabonds,'' he laughed. ''They were always cropping in the court records as having stolen sheep or burnt woods down.'' He said the name means a small stream and he would have thought many people would have taken such a name. No Cuckolds In The Sykes Nest There was another eye opener in his findings. ``With 50 percent having the same Y chromosome ... it works out roughly at about 1 percent per generation for no paternity,'' Sykes said. ``It's really quite low -- lower than the rates we are accustomed to these days. It essentially means that 99 percent of Mrs. Sykeses have been very well-behaved.'' Sykes, whose lab linked a 9,000-year-old skeleton known as ''Cheddar Man'' to an Englishman living nearby in 1997, said the applications of this latest work will be most valuable to people tracing family histories. ``It is astounding news for genealogists,'' he said. Noting that written records are rare before 1700, he said it would be a good way for people to track their ancestry. Anticipating this, he has patented the test for an association between a surname and the Y chromosome, and, with the university, started up a company to perform the tests. ``We are probably going to call it Oxford Ancestors,'' he said. http://dailynews.yahoo.com/htx/nm/20000404/sc/science_surnames_1.html Bob - K
Wonder if this has messed up a researcher or two? The custom of playing tricks on people on April 1 began in France after a new calendar was instituted in the 16th century. Previously, the New Year had been celebrated April 1, but the new calendar switched it to the familiar January 1. Out of habit, many people continued to observe April 1 as the beginning of the year. They were known as "April fools," and eventually the custom arose of playing tricks on that day. The French call victims of April Fools pranks "April fish." Maybe that's because they go for the bait. I have a step-daughter who lives about 30 miles north of Lufkin. We don't get up there very often, though, and certainly not until after the next hurdle - big wedding in June. If you could furnish me with names and approximate locations of cemeteries, perhaps I can help you this summer. When I made my first genealogy field trip last fall, all my pictures were of tombstones. My son-in-law asked why I only took pictures of tombstones<grin>. If the bug hasn't bitten you, you just don't understand. I doubt we're related until the lines merge in Virginia. My Vicks left Virginia around 1800 and settled in western Kentucky. My mom is the only person in our Vick line who came to Texas - and that was relatively recently in 1962. Funny how genealogy changes your perspective of "recent." My trip last fall netted great pictures from the Vick cemetery in Livingston County, Kentucky - one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I've ever been. As far as the Texas State Archives go, just give me something specific to look up ... Pat Wilson (great granddaughter of James Arthur and Ora Barnes Vick)

Jim, I'm sorry I wasn't able to help out, but if you need anything in these neck of the woods just let me know. Kristi McKinney, Texas
Hi Kristi, It would be great to have you do the work for me but it requires a visit to Lufkin which located in Angelina County, I believe that may require a bit too much travel unless you have another reason to go to Lufkin. Thanks anyway, Jim Vick Verona, Italy
Hi Pat, Thanks for the offer of the state genealogy library if you do happen to find something you think I will be interested in I would appreciate hearing from you. I really wanted to find somebody that would take some pictures of the Arthur and Vick gravestones in and near Lufkin, TX. Don't know how close of cousins we are but quite likely cousins at that. I was the 7th child in a family of 16 children, 7 boys and 9 girls. My father Alva Lee Vick was 34 when I was born, he was born 21 Oct 1898 in Trinity County, TX, died 4 Oct 1972 in Albuquerque, NM. My mother Mary Evelyn Arthur Vick was born 11 Mar 1899 in Lufkin, Angeline County, TX died 7 Apr 1942 in Fort Stanton, NM. My grandfather James Albert Vick came from Lee County, TX and homesteaded in Richland, NM in 1916. My great-grandfather Joseph William Vick 1855-1944 moved from Lee County, TX and retired in Portales, NM for some reason when he died in 1944 he was buried in Richland, NM. I have quite a few ancestors buried in Lexington, Lee County, TX my grandmother Eva Magdeline Purcer 3 Mar 1880 - 7 Feb 1946 left relatives in Lexington, TX. My great-grandmother Margaret Ann Lyles Vick 1859 - 1932 also left relatives in Lee County, TX. I shall give you a big thank you in advance for anything you might come across and send to me. Regards, Jim Vick, Verona, Italy PS: I served in the US military (Army) here in Verona where I met and married my wife Giuliana Manini. I became total disabled in 1978 we moved here in June 1980 hand have lived here since. We still call Sierra Blanca County, Texas our home for voting.

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/4024/ejvick.html http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/v/i/c/Shirley-anne-C-Vick/ Hi, I am new to the Vick list. My name is Faye and I just started yesterday trying to find out about half of my four year old grandson's ancestry. What I know right now is: Frank Vick born 12-7-1860 died 10-21-1931. He married Alice Crumpler 1-13-1889. Frank's mother is listed on death certificate as Celia. I have also done a search and come up with a list of genealogy pages with at least one Vick on them, some many more. I'll share with you, because I don't even know who they are yet, since some don't even list locations with the names.
