    1. [VICK-L] Limestone County, Texas
    2. Greetings from the banks of the Mississippi River in Helena, Arkansas I need someone to look in the 1870 census of Limestone County, Texas for the Matthew or Mathew or Mathis Families. I am trying to tie up some loose ends of the family of Joseph K. Matthews who married Virginia McDowell in Phillips County, AR in 1861. This is the" Cousin Virginia Mathis" refered to in a letter written by Adelia Vick upon there arivial in Texas in 1869. ( Adelia's mother was Mary Caroline Boyd daughter of Mary McDowell Boyd. Virginia McDowell was the daughter of John Y. Mcdowell -borther to Mary McDowell Boyd. ) The Matthew/Mathew/Mathis famiy left Phillips County and moved to Texas after 1860. Any help would be appreciated. Hard to find good Texas records in eastern Arkansas. Thanks, Bob Turner

    3. OK, Jim -- Sounds like you've got a good start on an article for a future issue of the Vick Family Newsletter. As editor, I now officially designate you a staff writer! Seriously, I really would love for you to put together an article -- I think it would be really interesting and maybe we could even get some pictures to run in the feature. I think illustrations and photos add so much. The current Newsletter, which will mail when the reunion plans are complete, has a lot of really interesting material in it --- BUT IT NEEDS PICTURES! 3. Hi David and list, Hey David is Paltalk anything like ICQ? I believe it was you and Bob who talked me into getting ICQ then I was only able to chat with people here in Europe and Australia, a couple times I got someone in the US but could never get anyone that I was acquainted with. And most of those I was able to get were teens wanting to talk about sex. I still have it on diskette but never loaded it into my present computer. Due to the time differences between here and the US I would have to log on very early in the morning and the person in the US very late at night or visa-versa. Thanks anyway, Jim Vick Verona, Italy

    1. [VICK-L] Re: [VICK-Paltalk.com
    2. Jim & Vick List, I would like to tell you about a small program that will allow you to talk to us on this side of the water. It is Paltalk, it is free and works great. Type it in your search and all you do is load it then put my name <Good2news> when you see me online we can talk in real time at no charge. I am sure there are many more Vick's and friends in the states this will work very well for you to talk to. So give me a ring when you get it loaded. Now for all the others on this list if you are tired of paying long distance phone bills, your day has come. Dialpad. This little program is very easy to work cost is free. With it you can call anywhere in the US FREE. I have used it for a few days now WOW it is really neat. All you need is a Mic plug it into your PC then Type Dialpad in your search Engine and sign up at AOL's Dialpad, wala that is all there is to it. Then when you are ready to make a long distance call click that site from your favorite places and when it opens type in the phone number you want to call then talk as long as you like, it's free, anywhere in the US. To talk to Jim you will need the other program Paltalk. That lets you talk from PC to PC. So get started it easy it's fun and it's free. No excuses to not be in touch. By the way all you guys I have enjoyed the discussion of Vick Town. Later Cuz;en David 906 W Terrace Dr Plant City Fl. 33565 813-659-3435 Http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Interview/4893/index.html

    1. [VICK-L] Union Statue in the deep south... Why?
    2. Ronald Vick
    3. During the Civil war, salt was in such high demand in the south that a man could get an exemption from the draft by working in the salt fields. It was hot sweaty work, but at least the salt flats didn't shoot holes in a person. One of the locations was the flat areas on the northwest side of St. Andrew Bay, in the pan-handle area of Florida. The way it worked was that dikes were opened to allow the flow of sea water into a large flat area, then it was sealed off and the water allowed to dry, leaving salt behind. The Union never considered that this would be a military target so it operated until the very end of the war. At that time a union officer was sent to scout the area. In his travels around the bay, he fell in love with the land to the northeast side of the bay and decided that he'd like to live there. He bought all of the land at a very reasonable price and went into the real estate business. He laid out a complete city, with streets named after the states running north & south, with numbered streets east and west. The thing that really made his procedure unique was that he'd only sell to veterans of the union army. Many bought the land and had houses built as retirement homes, although some moved in fairly soon after the war. It was pretty hard for them not to notice all the monuments all over the south, commemorating the southern soldiers, so during a meeting they passed the idea, collected money, bought and erected a large statue to the Union Soldier. The statue was the starting point of many parades, and also the gathering point for funerals. The old cemetery is about a mile east of the town is filled with union soldiers and the family members that moved south with them. Today, the town is a sleepy little town, with moss draped oak trees and an easy going attitude such as is found in many southern towns, but they have this one unique statue. Incidently, the salt flats are still across the bay, you can see them easily as you fly into the local airport, but instead of salt, they're used to grow commercial shrimp. Ok, everyone can wake up now. Ron PS- I never did find how Vicksburg, Fl got it's name.

    3. Hello, I only have the following who ws said to have been a Vick. I do not have any proof that she is. My gggggrandfather was James M Spillers who was married to Candice Vick. According to census info they were both born in TN. James around 1817 and Candice around 1812. The source of the information that Candice is a Vick comes from Pope Co. AR History Vol. 1. James and Candice arrive in Pope Co at the time that Samuel and Drucilla Vick arrived. Any help establishing the identity of Candice would be appreciated. Her obit is below. " Pope Co. Mrs. Spillers was claimed to have been the oldest woman in the county, being 98 years of age at the time of her death, the greater part of her life being spent in this county. 3. ----- The AZ Republic had an article in it Apr 24th by Ken Colburn that talked about the worm virus and how it works. He also told how to check for it and remove it. I saved the article and just now checked for it and sure enough it was in my computer!!! I'm quoting him word for word so you can check your computers. "The reason you are unable to remove it is because it is lurking in memory(RAM) at the time that you are attempting to remove it from the hard drive, which is not possible. It usually puts itself in the start-up area of your computer to ensure that it is launched when you start up your computer. To get rid of this pest, use the Find utility to locate the "network.vbs" file. Click on Start/Find/Files or folder to open the dialog box. In the "Named:" section, type"network.vbs," then set the "Look in:" option to "Local Hard drives" (if you only have a C: drive, this option may not appear; jut use C:). Make sure the box in front of the "Include subfolders" option is checked and click on it and select Delete. After you have removed the file, shut down your system immediately. The process should remove it from your start up and allow you to restart your system without it loading. If this machine is connected to a network, you will need to perform this process on all systems to prevent the spread of the worm in during your attempts to clean it up. This network. vbs series of worms was discovered in February of this year, with new variants as recently as the beginning of this month, so be sure to update your virus definition files before cleaning your system. This will insure that all of the currently known variants are detected and disinfected as well. I supposedly have an updated virus definition file but still had this virus in my computer! So just to be safe check yours, too.

Smile I had not posted any thing and in some time, a felt it was time for me to contribute something to the list. By the way my brother Bill is up and running, got a PC that is how do we send him and invite to join the list? Anybody else for that matter. Oh I have to pass this on. I have a site that lets you make long distance phone calls anywhere in the United States free. That no joke it free I have been burning the airways up with very interesting stuff, well OK just stuff. But it really is free and it sounds very good. You call from your PC to anybody home phone number and there you have it. If anybody needs help call on somebody that knows something. However I think if I can get it up and running in 5 minuets anybody can. Plus it does not take space on your hard drive. It is there web page you just sign on....Tee Hee sounds to good to be true but it is true. no more long distance and very easy to load. Well, not load just go to there home page and you make your calls from there..
