    2. Gosh, Norene, You make me miss the south plains and llano estacado with your letter. As a Texas Tech grad, I can sure remember walking the long hakf mile from west parking to the Architecture building where the Dean is a Vick by marriage. Lubbock was sure a good place to live and a lot warmer in the winter than Warsaw. A local boy has recently done well, though. Hungarian-born Tech Grad Ambassador Nagy has just been appointed to his second posting (albeit in Africa). The other Tech grads in the Foreign Service (long shots that we are) are encouraged to see it. Jeff Norene wrote: > I have kept quiet here in Eastern New Mexico. 3. Hi Maggie and the list, It's already 9:45AM Jan 23 here in Verona, and though we have had some quite warm weather, this morning we have a cold front on us and it promises to stick with us until the first of February. I just haven't had a lot of luck in researching the England connection of the Vick's, however since I have found a few Vick's in England it does seem to be promising so I shall continue to search. Do take care of yourself, Jim Vick, Verona, Italy

    3. I have kept quiet here in Eastern New Mexico. Lubbock paper said yesterday that Jan. 2000 will long be remembered in our area as every day except two have been record highs for this time of year. We had a little mist and a light shower Christmas morning, a little snow one morning the first of December and that is all the moisture we have had all winter. If this continues, I look for the few fruit trees we have here to start blooming very soon. Then we will have a good frost and kill the blooms and ruin the fruit. I don't complain. I love warmer weather, but I could do without the wind we have been getting. Norene in Portales, NM

    1. [VICK-L] More Vick Sites
    2. Here is info I found on my net adventure. To find additional Vick buriel sites visit: Independence Cemetery Wilson County Alabama. http://www.prairiebluff.com/algenweb/wilcox/indepcem.htm Additional information about Lucy Vick below and can be found at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/7241/john.html In view of the following I believe Lucy Hardy's birth was c1650. Her dau Lucy Council's b. c1675, approximately the same as her husband, Richard Wooten Jr, birth. I'm very interested in the comments from others researching the Hardy/Council/Wooten lines. 1. In 1676 Lucy Hardy was married and the mother of three children when John Hardy in his LWT identified her and named her husband, Hodges Councill. (IOW WB2 p146). The three children were later identified as Christian, Hodges Jr and Lucy. 2. Lucy's husband, Hodges Council (Sr) b. c1653 based on the fact that he acquired land in his own right in 1674 (IOW DB1, p.30). In 1674 a man could witness wills, deeds, etc, but was considered a minor and could not own land until he reached the age of 21. 3. Lucy was probably about 3-4 years younger than her husband. 4. In 1703, Lucy's 2d dau, Lucy Council b. c1675l m. Richard Wooten (Jr) (IOW DB 4 p98). Richard b. c1675 (between 1672-1680). Lucy Council Wooten was probably an infant when her grandfather, John Hardy died. Lucy Hardy d. 1682-1699. She relinquished her dower rights to a gift of land deed to Lucy Vick, dau of Joseph Vick in 1682 (IOW W&DB 1 p480), but was not alive when her husband, Hodges Council, died in 1699 (IOW WB2 p419) Martha Lackey At another site titled MillCreek Cemetary outside of Nashville, TN can be found the grave of a Joseph Vick who died in 1844 - no birth date given. Only Vick in cemetary. Visit: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3661/MillCreek.html W.C. Turberville 1795 - 1848 - Joseph Vick (?) - 1844 - James S. After preaching by Br. S. H. Lancaster, the church went into conference. The door of the church being open for the reception of members. Came forward W. C. Williams, Orlander M. Morgan, Mary Dennis and Joseph Taylor and joined by experience and baptism. Then appointed a committee of Br. Josiah Wallace and G. W. Wall to see Br. Sam Vick for the charge of drunkness and to bring their report in by the next church day, then dismissed in peace. Met at Liberty Church on Saturday before the second Lords day in November 1876. After preaching by Br. S. H. Lancaster, the church proceeded to business. Br. S. H. Lancaster pastorial year was about out. The church went into electoin. On balloting Br. S. H. Lancaster was elected for the year 1877. Then went into election for two stewards and a sexton. On balloting Br. John Page was elected sexton and Br. W. G. Morgan and M. D. Hutchinson was elected the two stewards. Then called for reference to be read. Then taken up the case of Br. S. M. Vick. On motion it was tabled for the next church date. The church granted Br. M. D. Hutchinson the privilege of changing the name and set them anywhere in the book he saw proper. The church ordered the rule of the qurom (sic) to be written down in the church book then ordered the minutes of every meeting to be read, then dismissed in peace.

    3. Gosh, I feel guilty rambly on about weather instead of keeping my nose to the grindstone so I will try to combine serious stuff with fun. The book is inching along, I've lost my indexer so I am having to do the index myself plus I discovered some inconsistencies between generation five's children as we show them in vol. 1 of "the book" and as they are shown in the draft of generation 6 (there were name variations and in some instances more children and many instances of additional marriages.) Adding that information meant that page numbers changed so I had to start the indexing all over again. But we are almost there. Frankly, you one season folks have my sympathy. Give me four seasons any time. I much prefer cold weather to hot. But before my Texas cousins jump on me, I'm not going to deny that do love the southwest and I feel most at home when I'm happily wandering my east Texas woods. We have beautiful snow today, along with bone chilling wind. For the first time, we have gold finches at our thistle seed feeder and I am tickled pink. On that note, I will go back to work! Di Ann

    3. Di Ann, Maggie and All, Well, we got our snow....about 11 inches so far and it is still falling....wind chills tonight will be 20-30 below zero with actually temps in the single digits! Good night for hot cocoa and staying in!! It is too powdery for sledding at our house much to the dismay of the grandchildren....couldn't even make a snowball with it....but it is beautiful on the evergreens and the cardinals look so pretty against the white background when they come to feed. Of course they are such bullies so we try to insure the little birds get their share also. Hey, Di Ann, how's the progress on the book coming along? Doris in Bedford

    2. James B. Davis
    3. Dear VICK cousins, I am tired of reading your complaints and comments about your weather. You don't know how lucky you have it! You think you have it bad? Just try to imagine living where the sun shines almost every day, where the average annual rainfall is only 12 inches, where the temperature most afternoons during the past month have been in the low-to-mid 70s and at night it drops to a chilly 55 or 60. Can you imagine anything more boring? No winter, no fall...just spring and summer, spring and summer...wearing summer clothes, even shorts, all year long. Oh, the horror and pain of it! We are expecting a bit of rain and a cold wave this weekend. The weather people on television are warning that it might get as cold as 65 in the day time! People are rushing to get their fire wood and their mink coats out of storage. (No kidding, there are more fireplaces in homes here than anywhere I've ever seen, and the few people who own one do wear their furs at 60-65 degrees, otherwise they would never get to wear them here). Now please don't cry for me or send expressions of sympathy. I've lived here for almost 30 years and I am acclimated to it. Besides, I am of hardy VICK stock, of the Tennessee VICKs, which helps me to deal with these adverse weather conditions. With fondest regards, I am your Beverly Hills cousin, and publisher of the hopefully soon to be released book about our ancestor, JOSEPH, James B. 3. Doris (and all the other Vick weather forecasters) -- You at least had some snow last year. Over here in Philadelphia, we haven't even had much of a winter for the past three years. Finally (underlined), we have had some cold weather since the first of the year and FINALLY this morning we have those lovely white flakes falling from the sky. It's a mixed blessing: I just moved my office from the basement up to the second floor and I'm afraid that today I am going to lose an awful lot of time staring out the window! Di Ann

    3. Hi Folks! We are expecting our first significant snowfall tonight here in Bedford, Pa. We are in the south central part of the state and everyone around us has had snow. We are about 15 miles from Blue Knob ski resort and they finally started getting some...have been making artificial snow all winter. Last year at this time, we had close to 2 feet of snow on the ground which lasted for several weeks. We have had the cold temps though; single digits with wind chill 20 degrees below zero!! The grandchildren are itching to do some sledding so perhaps they will finally have their chance....the 3 year old got a new sled for Christmas and so far hasn't gotten to use it. He looks out the window everyday to see if it is snowing yet. I personally love the changing seasons even though I was born and raised near San Antonio, Texas. It is really beautiful here in the mountains of Pa. Doris Moore

    2. DIANN VICK
    3. Gosh Maggie and Bob you sure are making me envious. Maggie, like you I love the snow. We haven't had any snow to speak of in about three years, No, make that four. We had the worst blizzard in this area's recorded weather history in 1996: 30.7 inches in 24 hours. That doesn't sound like much for some placed, but for here it was an absolute disaster. The streets couldn't be plowed because there was no place to put the snow. Philadelphia is located between two rivers so initially the streets department was dumping the plowed snow in the rivers, but the rivers became dangerously clogged so that had to stop. It was a mess from some viewpoints -- but it was gorgeous! I just sat back and watched it come down, made up a pot of nice hearty soup, and snuggled down to enjoy it. I did go out and play in it some (I'm still a kid at heart) and I did take some walks. I live right on the edge of Fairmount Park (one of the largest city parks in the country) so I could enjoy both the beauties of the city and the forest -- both wrapped in beautiful coats of snow and ice. Since then we haven't even had much cold weather until this past week. Now we're being hit by dangerously cold weather (purple alert to get the homeless off the streets and into shelters) -- and soaring heat bills. But Bob, you're causing me real alarm: am I going to miss the wild flowers again this spring? Try to slow things down won't you! I can tell from my Texas electricity bills that the weather has been warm. Usually I get a break in winter, but it hasn't happened this year. When I was down there last fall, the horses seemed to be growing unusually heavy winter coats and I thought for sure we'd have some cold weather in east Texas, but I guess no. Frankly, where I have my place needs rain and cold. Rain to break the continuing semi draught and cold weather to kill off the bugs. Oh well. I guess I should get back to work. Di Ann
