    1. [VIA-L] Huguenots
    2. Jewell sent me an article on Jean de Jarnat a French Huguenot. While the article does not pertain to the Via's it does have some interesting points in it. So I will include just the portion that may be of interest to us as researchers. Jean deJarnat petitioned the General Assembly, summoned to meet at her Majesty's Royal College of William and Mary on March 17, 1702, for naturalization. The Assembly met on March 19th, "in the second year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Anne by the Grace of God of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, Queen Defender of the Faith". Thency, by several proroations, the Assembly continued to meet at the Royal Capitol. On the 18th day of April 1705, the petition was considered. Jean, along with Jean deLaune, John James Veillon, John Guy Rey and Gabriel Maupin became British subjects and citizens of the Colony of Virginia. Does anyone know where General Assembly info can be found for the years prior to the above mentioned 1702? There is every reason to believe that John (Americanized name) Dejarnatt was a Huguenot, and was forced to flee France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. It is thought that he left France by way of the port of La Rochelle because this was a stronghold of the Huguenots. Throngs of Protestant Frenchmen left France after 1685. Some went to Holland and some to England. Great numbers of the Huguenots immigrated to America. Those who came to America were required to touch at an English port and receive permission before proceeding. Even though this part of this article references 1685 I suspect some of the "rules" were the same in 1675 when William Vier was transported to Virginia. So what I find interesting was the information about La Rochelle and the fact that the Huguenots coming to America were required to touch at an English port and receive permission to continue. So...if we can ever get together somehow as a group to look for Amer before he came here these may be some interesting clues to follow. It's great to know this stuff!! and I thank Jewell for so freely sharing this type of info. Judy
