William, In checking the Rowland Berry you mention above it doesn't look like he would be a descendent of Mary Via Berry. On-line info suggests his father was Elisha Berry and Frances Sampson and the father of Elisha Berry was John Berry and wife Jemima. In looking at the processioning records of St Pauls Parish on page 343 in mentions William Berrys orphans in area 6, November 17, 1755. On page 348 for November 17, 1755 it lists Mary Berry. So assuming this is Mary Via Berry the records on 343 pertaining to William Berry do not appear to give us the name of Mary's husband. She's listed in area 11. In looking through some other records I find a George Berry in Hanover county in 1733. On petition of Charles Barrett it is ordered that John Kimbro Senr, George Berry, John Henson and John Harris do value the buildings works and Improvements with Regard to expenses on 400 acres belonging to the petitioner on the North branch of the North fork of the Little River and make report at the next court. The interesting part of this is George Berry signed with his mark - a B. I've often wondered why some of the Via's used as their mark a signed letter. In 1733 Frances Horsley wife of Robert Horsley (father & mother of Rowland Horsley) signed Robert's will with her mark - the letter F. Another record found - Geo Berry 180 acres, 13 Nov 1756 on North side Pounding Creek by John Staples, joining Wm Berry, Matt Mills, Andr Greenhors. Transferredc to Gaml Baley. (This is from Land Lying in Albemarle County). Same source for the following: Benjamin Chenault, 49 acres, 18 Dec 1760 on head of a branch of North Hardware River, joining Jon Fieldes, Wm Berry, Wm Nelson Esq. Transferred to Nathan Shelton and from Shelton to John Clarkson. Clifton Rodes, 152 acres, Dec 5, 1783 lying on the South side of Mechums river and the branches thereof, by William Hay, joining Wm Berry, Hen Mills, Jno Thomas. In checking the processioning records of St Pauls Parish, Mary Berry was listed in precinct or area 11 on November 17, 1755. The next processioning took place in 1759. She is not listed in precinct 11 but her previous neighbors are all still there. So either Mary died in that 4 year span or like so many others she left the area. To be continued...... Judy
