Robert Viars/Vier/etc (too many spellings to list). Born in 1755, next found as a Rev War soldier in Botetort Co in 1780s. Captain Baird's unit, I think. I'm quite suspicious there was some connection with the Tomer/Thomas family of the Germanna Colony (Culpeper Co. Va)since a couple of them were in the same outfit and one of Robert's granddaughters married a Thomas in Ky. Many of the Germanna Thomases moved to the same county (Mason/Lewis) as Robert. Married Mary Carpenter in Botetort. The Carpenters were very early settlers in the Cow Pasture area. And were from Long Island originally. Next they were in the Lewisburg/Greenbriar Co. area of WV for several years. Mary is mentioned in her father's will as Mary Vier. The family bought land in Mason County around 1800. The area became Lewis County around 1802. An interesting factoid, Thomas Jefferson's daughter married a Lewis and died and is buried in Lewis County. I'm also related to a Lewis family that married into another line. I don't think these Lewises are related to Jefferson's son-in-law but that is a possibility. Anyway, Botetort isn't far from Amherst County and several Horsleys are buried in the family plot. I never have been able to pin down exactly who Robert's parents were since his age does not match the young Robert mentioned in early Botetort records. Another interesting fact, several of the Maryland Vear/Veirs line settled in Lewis and Mason counties. One was married to Patsey Moon. I really don't believe in coincidences. > Judy Sue
