    1. RE: [VIA-L] Still Viar in Albemarle County, Virginia

    3. I have lived in Albemarle County almost all of my life. I went to the telephone book and there are 45 listings for VIA and 15 for VIAR. The Viar's are almost all in Nelson county where just about all of the Via's are live in Albemarle. My maiden name was "Via". My Via family are from the area of Albemarle where you lived - Sugar Hollow, Doylesville, and they, as you say, spelled it as "VIA." But on occasion, in letters in the 1930s and 1940s, my great grandmother signed her name as "VIAR." I do not know why.  I have often wondered if it seemed more "literate" that way. ~~ <A HREF="http://www.ednabarney.com/">Edna Barney</A>

    3. Just to throw in my two cents! <G> My Henry William who was the son of Gideon Via, was born in King William County, VA, lived in Caroline county and believed to have died in King William County. His name appears as Vier, but Henry's children who moved to WV listed their name as Viar. So it seems it was Via , Vier and then Viar, which makes for a difficult time researching if you are not that familar with the many different lines.
