If Harrison VIA was born about 1842, as the census gives, and his father, Carter VIA died in 1856, it would be very logical to send these young VIA teen boys off to an uncle for rearing. I suspect that James H. (or A.) VIA was a brother or other close kin of Carter VIA. According to the marriage record of James H. VIA and Mary Ann Keller, the names of his parents were recorded as Silas and Mary VIA. I have never heard of a "Silas" in the VIA family. Yet there were "Josiah" and "Josias" VIA in Hanover County. The James H. VIA marriage certificate is *NOT* the original. It was typed up in 1981 as a "certified" copy, yet there are often mistakes on these "certified" records. The original marriage record should still be available at the Albemarle Courthouse, so a photographic copy of that one should be obtained to see if the father's name is really "Silas" VIA or is it "Josias" VIA. I'm betting on "Josias", since I've never come across any VIA named Silas.
Edna, I have a copy of James Henry Via and Mary Ann Keller's original marriage license. I copied it from microfilm last month. It is hand written and says Silas & Margaret Via for the grooms parents.
