He was a retired Master Sargeant in the U. S. Army after 20 years and serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was also retired from the Virginia Dept. of Transportation with 15 years of service. Survivors include three sisters, Josephine Turpin of Newport News, Lillie Saul of Portsmouth, and Mabel Guthrie of Jonesboro, Ga.; two brothers, Vintes Viars of Connor, Ga. and Bentley Viars of Mannon, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Dr. Gary Rapp officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin where members of VFW Post #1184 will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
