Charlotte Ave., Waynesboro, died Saturday (Jan. 30, 1993) in his residence. He was born Jan 31, 1921, in Waynesboro, a son of the late Hiram Thomas and Bertha Bryant Via Sr. He was a retired U.S. Army Master Sgt. Completing 30 years of service. While serving in military in World War II, he was awarded the following medals: the Efficiency Honor Fidelity Award; the National Defense Medal; 17 Bronze-Stars; the Bronze Star Medal; the Heroic or Meritorious Achievement Medal; the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action; Seven Oak Leaves Commendation; Two Green Beret Clusters; the Purple Heart with Four Clusters (military merit); the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; the American Campaign Medal 1941-45; and the German Medal Army of Occupation 1945. In the Korean War, he received the Korean Service Medal with Four Bronze Stars and the Korean Medal for Service in Defense of the Principles of the Charter of the United Nations. He attended the Free Pentacostal Church in Waynesboro and retired from Acme Visible Records in Crozet in 1986. He was a member of a number of clubs and organizations. He was preceded in death by one son, Dale Via on Oct 16, 1989; and two brothers. Ronnie and Alfred. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Elizabeth Layne Via; 13 children, Loretta Elizabeth Ivey of Smyrna, Tenn., Harold Thomas Via of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Howard Theodore Via of Stuarts Draft. Ray Lewis Via of Kentucky, Stanley Allen Via of Waynesboro, Steve Anthony Via of Tennessee, Bobby Lee Via of Waynesboro, Betty Ann Louderback of Waynesboro, and Linda Deloris Atkins, Paul Via, Rex Morgan Via and Michael Daniel Via, all of Waynesboro, and Sherry Lynn Cash of Stuarts Draft; four brothers, Edgar, Grandville, Joe, and Phil; three sisters, Faye, Joan and Eleanor; one aunt, Myrtle Dunn of Waynesboro; 42 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Waynesboro chapel of Etter Funeral Home by the Rev. Denny Kestner and military Chaplin Capt. Wayne Harris from Fort Lee. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. Full military honors will be conducted by a detachment from Fort Lee. Active pallbearers will be sons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and may also call at the residence on Charlotte Ave.
