Janelle, I was thrilled to receive this information. There is a little more I will be posting in the next few days. Anytime I can find a document from the burned counties I really get excited. The Bible page gave us the names of Edmund's children but this will helps too. Makes it easier to see who Pleasant Via was named after. I sure wish there was a concentrated effort for the various societies to share early documents. LVA has started a Burned County record site which is great but so far does not have any Via documents listed. I'll be posting a few letters written to Edmund Via. I don't think there's much help in these documents but I find them very interesting. It gives us some insight into their lives. How was Gilson related to Edmund? Judy

Michelle, I am so glad to see your e-mail. I have been trying to work on this line. The 1850 Franklin Co., census show a John Via Jr. with wife Nancy, children Amanda, Madison, Lorenia, Mary J., Sparrel, and unnamed female. I believe the census taker made an error in showing John Via Jr. I believe this to be the family of Peter Via. Peter married Margaret Martin in 1833. He married Nancy Justice in 1845. I believe William, Amanda, Madison, Lorenia or Lavinia, were the children of Peter and Margaret. The children Mary J., Sparrel, Nancy Adaline, George Washington, David and Sally were the children of Peter and Nancy Justice Via. The reason I believe this census record to be in error is because I cannot find marriage or death certificates to place any of these names as children of John Via Jr. I can however find these documents placing some of these as children of Peter. William is a son of Peter's and Margaret. He was the one arrested for killing his father in 1854. Amanda is listed as a daughter of Peter and Margaret on her marriage certificate. Sparrel is listed as a son of Peter on his marriage certificate. As is Nancy Adaline, George Washington, and Sally Via. David is listed as a son of Peter and Nancy in the Franklin County Birth Index. I believe Peter was the son of Josias Via but do not have documentation to prove this relationship. Judy
I was wondering if anyone on the list could help me out. I have an Amanda Via who married Anderson Newberry. Her father is stated as being a Peter Via (son of Josias Via). Peter Via, married Margaret (possible) Martin. Does anyone know if Amanda's father was Peter Via, and if so, where the evidence was found (marriage record, etc). Thank you for your time. Michelle
Judy, Thank you for posting the will of Pleasant Jones. I had never seen it. I do not use the VA Historical Society as a source nearly as much as I should although I know it holds valuable papers collected about many families. If I am interpreting this will correctly, it appears that Ann Jones may be a sister of either Edmund Via or of Edmund's wife, Sally. In any event this is the first I have seen that mentions sons of Edmund, son of Gideon, other than James, except for the listing of all the ten sons of Edmund on that Bible page. Janelle
In the name of God Amen I Pleasant Jones of the County of Hanover, being very Sick and weak in health but in perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God; calling unto mind the mortality of my Body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and testament, that is to say principally and first of all, I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors: nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life. I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. first I give and bequeath to Ann Jones my dearly beloved wife during her natural life all my Estate with all my household goods, debts, and moveable Effects and at the death of her to be equally divided between Pleasant Via and Samuel Via Sons of Edmund Via to them and their assigns for ever. I do hereby revoke all other form, Will or testament heretofore made by me, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this twenty seventh day of April in the Year of Our lord one thousand eight hundred and thirteen. Hi everyone, I am happy to say we have 3 NEW members in our DNA Via Surname Project. They just became members tonight, so I haven't had time to put their family lines on the website yet. Two were already in another Surname Project, Kit N4704 & Kit 42574. They BOTH had an Exact 12 marker match to our member Kit 42087. So, I ask them if they would like to join our group, and they did! I was told by a few people that it is VERY common to have a 12 marker match with someone who has a different surname then you. And both these people have different surnames. (Powell & Dixon) Their DNA results are on the website. I was also told, that most of Europe will match in 12 markers. It is the 25 & 37 markers that is more meaningful. Please check out the NEW results. http://www.familytreedna.com/public/ViaSurnameProject/ Our other member who just join, his family line is from John Via b. abt. 1710. Come and join the FUN! I thank all for the encouragement. I am still searching for the precise location of Spring Bottom, and because of an interruption this week, I have not been in touch with LVA for hoped for assistance. I shall communicate what I find as soon as I find what we are seeking. Janelle
We just got a DNA test results in tonight. Kit 43838 match exactly to my brother, also to Kit 43157 and Kit 41915. But, I knew that BEFORE the results came back. Kit 43838 in my Uncle, so I knew he would match my brother. The reason why I asked my Uncle to join the Via DNA Project was, so I can ALSO get information on my Grandmother's side of the family before it is to late. My Uncle is 80 years old. So please, check out the results we have so far. And if YOU haven't joined the Via DNA Project yet, please do. You just might get a BIG surprise on WHO your DNA will match too! Remember the results are on the bottom of the page. Have FUN! I would appreciate any info that can be passed on. Thanks Jeannie Via
Does anyone have a copy of any of the following books? Genealogy of the Via Family, by John W. Via, 1989 Memories of a Barber, by George Milton Via Via Family, by Nina Lou Via Roland, 1981 Thank you, Judy
Here's a website that has the cemetery information for Gideon Viers (Perry Co., Illinois) and other Viers. _GALUM BAPTIST CEMETERY_ (http://www.perrycountyillinois.net/sub71.htm) Judy
My last e-mail didn't work out too well. I tried including a map. If you'll go to this web site you'll see a pretty good map outlining the boundaries for St. Paul's Parish. _JGG - Vol 1, #2_ (http://www.gentryjournal.org/archives/jgg0102.htm) Judy
Figure 2. St. Paul's Parish boundaries, 1720 This map is from the web site _JGG - Vol 1, #2_ (http://www.gentryjournal.org/archives/jgg0102.htm) (Nicholas Gentry family) Does anyone know anything about Matadequin Creek? It appears to be a relatively short creek. We're looking for the location of the mouth of this creek. Does it get it's water from the Pamunkey River? Judy
One Chain=66 feet per my Webster Dictionary. Jim

I should have reread Edna and Judy's message of the 17th. I shall check all these maps I have of the area to see where the main run of the creek "30 chains below the mouth of Spring Bottom is." George Turner is my ancestor also. I know I've seen "Spring Bottom" so it should be fairly easy. Can anyone help me with the length of a chain? Janelle

William, I have the two Geological Survey maps, one of the Quinton quadrangle that traces the Matadequin into New Kent County and the other being the Manquin Quadrangle that shows the origins of the creek [near the land of Gilson Via; this land came to him through his wife, Cynthia Hugues, so don't get excited; it wasn't Via land originally], tracing it until it enters into the Quinton one. Sorry, my despcription is poor. The surveys were done in 1965 and 1968 respectively. Actuallly, they do not help us determine the exact location of Amor's land any more than the description that someone quoted in an earlier message does. We only have a general idea, but taken together with much other data the location can be narrowed, I think I also have four negative images of Civil War Maps I ordered either from The National Archives or The Library of Congress, and they are very fine for locating land owners during the Civil War, but they are no help with the location of Amor's land. In addition, I have the Official Military Atlas of the Civil War. The maps are indispensable in locating landowners and showing topographical points such as elevation, creeks, rivers, hillocks, etc., but there is no clue to the precise location of Amor's land. If we use the 1782 Land Tax record and dates enumeration were taken that I posted earlier in the week, and compare them to all precincts in which Amor or sons, Robert and/or William appear, we might be able to eliminate some of the precincts that are listed. I or someone shall have to check to see if and where the name of Matadequin Creek appears in those early precincts if they do. I don't remember, and I am not looking at my notes. Janelle

I am very happy to say, we had two more results come in tonight. Kit 41915 also had an Exact Match with my brother. And Kit 43766 was just one point away from matching my brother exactly. So, with these DNA results they tell us BOTH men came from the Albemarle family line. Which is very helpful, because these family line is NOT connected to Amer Via yet! Please check out the NEW results: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/ViaSurnameProject/ Elaine =^..^=
