    1. FREE DATABASE - West Virginia!
    2. Elaine
    3. Hi Everyone, I have been up ALL night getting Death certificates FREE on the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. So far I have copy about 145 Death certificates and looking for MORE. (Via, Viar, Viars, Viers) GOOD LUCK! Elaine =^..^= Division makes more than a million genealogy records available online to researchers The West Virginia Division of Culture and History (WVDCH), with FamilySearch Archive (Genealogical Society of Utah), has announced the launching of its Vital Research Records online database. The new online database features more than a million West Virginia birth, death and marriage records-a valuable resource for genealogists and historians. According to agency officials, family history researchers can now search and view scanned images of the original birth, death and marriage records from six counties, as well as most statewide death certificates from 1917-54, on the Division's website at www.wvculture.org/vrr. "We are very pleased to announce this project, which is of great value to anyone researching their family history in West Virginia" said Troy O. Body, WVDCH commissioner. "Early indications from genealogists who have begun using this new online resource are extremely positive. I encourage anyone with roots in West Virginia to take time to check out our website and make a connection with their past." Fredrick H. Armstrong, the Division's director of archives and history, added, "The ability to view digitized photographic images of the actual records rather than just the typed transcriptions is unusual in the online genealogy community. Having access to the actual record images contributes to increased accuracy in family research and we're proud to move West Virginia into the forefront of this movement." Developed in collaboration with FamilySearch Archive, which microfilmed, scanned and indexed the records, the initial phase of the project includes county records for Calhoun, Gilmer, Hardy, Harrison, Mineral and Pendleton counties. The database includes county birth records for the period 1853-1930, county death records for 1853 until the late 1960s, and county marriage records from the creation of the county until the late 1960s, all of which are searchable by name, county and date. Records from additional counties will be added over the next few years. Statewide death certificates will be added annually as the records become 50 years old. For more information, e-mail wvvrr@wvculture.org or call Armstrong or archivist Debra Basham at (304) 558-0230. The West Virginia Division of Culture and History, an agency of the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts, brings together the state's past, present and future through programs and services in the areas of archives and history, the arts, historic preservation and museums. Visit the Division's website at www.wvculture.org for more information about programs of the Division. 2. William R. Albertson
    3. Good Evening, Group!!! For those of you on the Daniel Maupin line I would like to post this VERY STRANGE STORY that just came to my attention this week. For over fifteen years I looked for Barthomew Spence and his wife Eliza Maupin, daughter of George Webb Maupin, son of Jesse Maupin. Several others looked also but could never find what happend to them after they married April 22, 1839 in Williamson Co. TN. Last Monday I received an email asking me if I knew anything about Barthomew Spence. I was shocked!!!! Emailed the lady and told her I had been looking all these years and was about to give up. She wrote back telling me she was a descendant and gave me the line and descendants down to her. This opened up a whole new line for me to work on. After working on the line many many hours I found this. Eliza Maupin's sister Sarah Maupin who married James Towlin (Townlin) had a daughter Margaret Towlin who married Clayton Overstreet. I had worked on Clayton Overstreet before and found that their two sons married two Victor sisters who were the grandaughters of Garton Bennett Maupin. Unbelieveable!!! They probably never knew they were related. I had just established about year ago that Garton was the son of Matthew Maupin, son of Gabriel Maupin and Ann Ballard of White Hall. Even more strange is that these two families Townlins and Spences ended up just about sixty miles from where I now live. This will make the rest of the research easy to travel to and complete. 1. Via Cemetery on Blue Ridge Mountain
    2. William R. Albertson
    3. Good Evening, Group!!! Some time ago and perhaps several times the subject of the Via Cemetery located on the Blue Ridge Mountain in Virginia was discussed. Although I never went up on the Mountain while I lived there I visited many people who had. Phil James of White Hall made a video of the cemetery that I also looked at. While in that area doing research I met a man who told that many of the stones in this cemetery, the family of Christopher Columbus Via, had disappeared over the years. He said when he first saw the cemetery many many years ago there were alot of stones. This man told me that many stones had been removed by a person who had used them in his yard as a walk. I have never told anyone of this, but now both men are deceased and perhaps now is the time to let descendants know of these stones. If you are a descendant of Christopher Columbus Via and would like to know about these stones please post a message on the list. The wife of the man who removed the stones still lives, the last I knew, and the parcel of land where the stones are reported to be. I never approached the man or his wife and never saw the walkway but did visit their home several times. I was reluctant to look in the backyard. William

    1. Can DNA find my line!??!
    2. Hello, all - Several moths back I had inquired as to whether or not anyone knew anything about my line of Vias. My line goes as such: Thomas Nicholas Via (1879-1925) son of: Charles Nicholas Viar (1850 - ?) son of: Nicholas Viar The "Nicholas" could also be a "William" depending on what sources you seek. My family notes DO say Nicholas who was married to Ann Nichodemus for whom I do have a copy of their wedding certificate dated May 16, 1844. All of the above mentioned were from VA & around the Lynchburg area. I hope someone can eventually help! Chris (_FaceInThePlace@aol.com_ (mailto:FaceInThePlace@aol.com) )

    1. Robert Via II, Et Al
    2. Edna, I know that my ancestor, Louisiana Via, who married Carter Via in 1828, was descended from Robert Via II (who married, probably secondly, Fanny Ann Ingram) through his son, Robert Via III (probably not son of Fanny Ann) of the deed of gift, through his son, Robert Via IV. However, Louisiana is female, of course, therefore lacking the Y chromosome. I know of one brother she had, but he didn't have a son. Fanny Ann and Robert Via II had son or sons; if you know of any living male descendants of this couple's son(s), their DNA should be a match for Robert Via II. Carter Via was the grandson of Littleberry Via (father was Josias Via, not Josiah Via), so, as I understand it, the male descendants of Robert Via II, Littleberry Via, Josiah Via and Gideon Via, all of Hanover, should have the same DNA. My interpretation based on the best evidence I have seen, know of and have researched is that these four men were brothers and the sons of Robert Via I, son of Amor/Amer Via. Carter Via and his wife, Louisiana Via, had son, Andrew Jackson Via among other sons, who had son Walter Turner Via among other sons, who had Roy Daniel Via (my father) among other sons. My direct male line dies out with my father's generation. My grandfather had six sons, but none of them had sons, and only two of them had three daughters between them. Carter Via had three sons, Andrew Jackson, Harrison and Edward, but only AJ had male living descendants. He had three sons, James Archer Via, Willie Jackson Via and my grandfather, Walter Turner Via. I believe the DNA that you are assuming is the same as Littleberry's comes from a male descendant of James Archer Via. I sent that descendant's wife and you among others the direct line from James Archer Via to Andrew Jackson Via to Carter Via to Josias Via to Littleberry Via to Robert Via I to Amor/Amer Via. Do you know if any of the male descendant sons of Josiah Via or Gideon Via (of Hanover) are participating in the Via DNA project? Both of the men had sons as we know. James Gilson was a descendant of Edmund Via, son of Gideon. I know that Josiah Via had at least one son, who was Caleb. There were probably others. Janelle

    1. William Via and Ann Shepherd
    2. In a message dated 12/12/2005 8:26:05 AM Pacific Standard Time, bviers@msn.com writes: His pension is one number off to my William Via S9513 filed 1843 Amherst/Nelson. Buddy, How strange that both pension applications are just one number off. I don't suppose that is of any real significance since one applied in Virginia and one applied in North Carolina. It appears as though your William was approved a few years before William of North Carolina. Still odd that their pension applications are only one digit different. I am wondering if William Via of North Carolina was the son of David Via and Frances Stringer. A couple of things lead me to look at this relationship. First William would be about the right age to have been their son. We don't know for sure which line David Via is through. If William's pension application is correct when it says he was born in King and Queen County that would give us a place to look at for David's parentage. The second thing that makes me look at David and Frances as the parents of William of North Carolina is that in William's pension application it makes reference to William's brother David. David Via and Frances Stringer also had a son David who was of an age to have been able to serve in the Revolutionary War. I'd sure like to be able to prove or disprove this theory. Anybody have any suggestions or comments? Thank you for your help Buddy. Judy
