I have thought that it would be a challenging project to determine the destination of all 10 of Edmund's sons. Did David die in Albemarle? We know that James, Edmund's son, stayed in Hanover, but there are eight more to be accounted for. I think I can put my finger on several that stayed in the Hanover/Richmond area. I've just never attempted to connect all of them. Harrison and Edward, my great grandfather, Andrew Jackson, their sisters Georgiana and Lavinia are listed in the household of their parents, Carter and Louisiana Via in the 1850 Hanover census. For Harrison and Edward to have gone to Albemarle to train under James H., the "master coachmaker" seems to indicate that the somewhat distant cousins had stayed in touch, doesn't it? I do not think that H and E were bound out. The family was fairly prosperous yeomen farmers/planters. It owned several hundred acres of land and some slaves (sad to say) and were never in debt until after the War. More likely they were apprenticed or simply learning from a master who also happened to be kin. In the South especially, one was cousin regardless of the number of times removed. Janelle

I don't know who a "Silas" would be unless it relates to a Josias. Even then I don't know of a Josias that could have been the father of James. Hopefully I can find the marriage record for James and Alice Tooler. I'll keep looking for a death record too. Thank you, Judy

Their father died in 1856 so I would guess that's about the time they went to Albemarle and then back to Hanover by 1861. Judy
I believe I saw a book in the Albemarle Court House having to do with apprenticeships. How about checking the personal property taxes for the 1856-1861 years. Seems like there should be some relationship between Harrison, Edward, and James H. Via. I wonder if James H. Via was the son of David Via and Nancy "Ann" Bunt. David I believe was the son of Edmund Via. David and Ann were married 4 Feb 1821. David died July 1850. The first child I have listed for David and Ann was John born about 1828. So if James H. according to census records was born about about 1825 he could have belonged to this family. Hopefully I can find the marriage record for James H. and Alice Toole. I've looked through the Albemarle Co. death records and do not find a death record for James H. Thank you for the help. Judy
Judy, I can't imagine why Edward and Harrison were listed in the 1860 Albemarle County Census in household of James H. Via (I don't know James H. or his parents of Hanover). Perhaps they were there hoping to find more opportunities than there were in Hanover. I had wondered why they were not listed in their Mother's household (Louisiana Via whose deceased husband was Carter Via) in Hanover, but it never occured to me to look in Albemarle. They were back in Hanover by 1861, as they both joined the 56th Virginia Infantry in Hanover when the Civil War commenced and fought with the 56th during the entire war. They were wounded and captured several times but survived and returned to Hanover where they married. Harrison was a farmer and Edward was a wheelwright. Harrison's wife was Mildred Hare from Pennsylvania, and as was noted in last Digest, Edward married Martha Ann Elizabeth Wood. Edward was a resident of Hanover the remainder of his life and is buried with wife in the Black Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in the far southeastern section of the county, not far from the land on which he was born. I do not know when Harrison left Hanover but he and Edward are both listed in the 1880 Census of Hanover. Their Mother died about 1872. My great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Via, their brother, left Hanover shortly after the Mother died. Janelle Via McKown

Does anyone know who the parents of James H. Via were? According to census records James was born about 1825. I believe James is from the Hanover line. His first marriage was to Alice Toole on 7 December 1846 in Albemarle Co., Va. The second marriage was to Mary Keller on 21 October 1857 also in Albemarle Co. Va. According to the census records he was a coach maker. In the 1860 Albemarle Co., Virginia census Harrison Via age 18 and Edward Via age 17 are in his household. I believe Harrison and Edward were the sons of Carter Via of Hanover County. Thank you, Judy

I almost envy you since our youngest grandchild will be 13, but we are expecting our first great grandchild in August (A girl). Enjoy your trip and those wonderful little girls.
