    3. Good Evening Group!!! Does anyone have the date of death and place of burial of Angeline and her husband Chapman White Harris? Just found out today by doing some research that Chapman White Harris is the grandson of Chapman White and Mildred Maupin. White Hall, VA is named after Chapman White. He died bet. 1810-1820 and it has been very difficult to put his family together, but it looks like he may have had a daughter Catherine White b. abt. 1802 who married Samuel J. Harris, their son was Chapman White Harris. If anyone knows anything of this family I would appreicate hearing from you. I am trying to write a history of White Hall and would like to include the complete family tree of Chapman White and his first cousing, his wife, Mildred Maupin. William

    3. Elaine - I thought you may be interested in this DNA info I found on Genforum. The reason I am sending this is that their are a number of seeming similarities and other connections between the Weir family of Pittsylvania County, with the Via family of Halifax County, including naming patterns. There is even a "Jonathan Weir": http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?virginia,va::weir::2230.html A male descendant of Thomas Weir of Pittsylvania Co., *VA* recently had a DNA profile completed. The profile does not match anyone currently listed in the Ware or Weir family DNA projects. As a matter of fact, he is of a completely different haplogroup. He is haplogroup I, while the others are from some form of haplogroup R. I would like to encourage other families who descend from Weir's who hale from *VA*, NC, and SC in the 1700's to join the project. Maybe we can figure out if any other of the Weir's or Ware's in this area are related. Because the I haplogroup appears to be rather rare compared with group R in the Weir/Ware family, it would probably be easy to link others from this family. I do have a paper trail that corroberates this male descendant's lineage all the way back to Thomas Weir. ... The male descendant is from Thomas Weir's son William. There were two other sons, Bezaleel and John. 1. Re: James H. Via Kin
    2. I believe that I got into a discussion a year or so ago about the name of Willie Jackson Via, grandson of Carter Via, son of Andrew Jackson Via and brother to my grandfather, Walter Turner Via. It was disputed by several that Willie's name was actually William based on the TYPED certified copy of birth certificate from the Virginia Bureau of Vital Stats that was typed a century or so AFTER the fact, but just as Helen Stogdale reports that she has microfilm copy of the ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN one listing Margaret as mother of James H. Via, I, too, have microfilm copy of the ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN one stating the name of Willie Jackson Via was Willie, NOT William. Willie was not uncommon for the period. Abraham and Mary Lincoln had son Willie, not William. I recognize that in the 21st Century one would be inclined to think Willie is simply a nickname for William, but in the 19th century it was a name unto itself. As for kinship of Hames H. Via to Harrison and Edward Via, please remember that the kinship may have originated with the mother, Louisiana (as opposed to the father, Carter), of the two brothers, Harrison and Edward. She, too, was a Via. See marriage bond, Henrico County, 1828, for Carter and Louisiana. It clearly states her maiden name is Via. Her father was Robert Via IV, son of Robert III, beneficiary of Robert II's deed of gift to him and who was a husband of Fanny Ann, although Fanny Ann, apparently, was not mother of Robert Via III (too many Robert's). I believe this is further illustration that one has to be very careful when using secondary sources, as the typed copy would be so classified. Even the original can be suspect. I mentioned in a message to the list a day or so ago that the daughter of Carter and Louisiana is listed in the 1850 Hanover County Census along with parents and siblings. She is Lavinia, and in the 1860 Census in Hanover Lavinia is listd with husband, Henry Jackson Clay Vass. Their marriage is listed in the Immanuel Episcopal Church at Old Church, Hanover in 1858. She is Lavinia here also. But when she dies in 1861, she is listed in the original HANDWRITTEN Death Register as CLEOPATRA Vass as reported by her mother, Louisiana Via (her husband is attached to his fighting unit and is away from Hanover), but I know this is daughter, sister and wife, Lavinia (Via) Vass based on other original data. So, what is my point? One must be careful in one's research and not jump to erroneous conclusions. It frequently takes piecing many pieces together to come up with the most correct data one can find, and even then we can't be absolutely sure. So, we keep an open mind until what facts as we know them are disproven. And Judy, thank you very much for having done the work and sharing with us in identifying Edmund's sons and what became of them. I know your sources are valid. Janelle

    3. Judy - Well, now that Helen Stogdale has verified that the original record gives "Silas VIA", your comment about "Micajah" and "Cager" got me to thinking about nicknames. "Cager" was a nickname for "Micajah". Could "Silas" have been a nickname for "Josias"? In fact, when one tries to say the name "Josias" quickly, it comes out "Sias" or "Silas". Perhaps James told the clerk that his father was "Josias VIA" and the clerk heard "Silas VIA" and wrote that down. 3. __In early Virginia apprenticeships were a way of obtaining technical training for the trades. For example, George Washington made daily entries into his dairy recording his surveying apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship vehicle was also used to remove orphans and other needy children from under parish or local government support, which may have happened to the sons of Carter when he died. Interestingly, George Washington was from an affluent family, but he was also an orphan who was not able to obtain an English education, so he went into the trades. 3. If Harrison VIA was born about 1842, as the census gives, and his father, Carter VIA died in 1856, it would be very logical to send these young VIA teen boys off to an uncle for rearing. I suspect that James H. (or A.) VIA was a brother or other close kin of Carter VIA. According to the marriage record of James H. VIA and Mary Ann Keller, the names of his parents were recorded as Silas and Mary VIA. I have never heard of a "Silas" in the VIA family. Yet there were "Josiah" and "Josias" VIA in Hanover County. The James H. VIA marriage certificate is *NOT* the original. It was typed up in 1981 as a "certified" copy, yet there are often mistakes on these "certified" records. The original marriage record should still be available at the Albemarle Courthouse, so a photographic copy of that one should be obtained to see if the father's name is really "Silas" VIA or is it "Josias" VIA. I'm betting on "Josias", since I've never come across any VIA named Silas.

William Thompson I believed died in Hanover County between 1851 and 1859. No info on Samuel B. Via. Edmund Via Jr - I believe he is one of the sons that died between 1810 and 1820. Gideon was in the 1850 Henrico County census. No further info. Burwell Campbell Via most likely died in Page County, Virginia between 1900 and 1910. I do not think that H and E were bound out. > Yes, I believe there is a family relationship and that's why they went to Albemarle to train. I cannot find James H. after the 1860 Albemarle County census. Harrison seemed to waver back and forth. He was in the 1860 Albemarle County census. 1861 he enlisted in the Confederacy and fought and was wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor. 1865 Harrison married Matilda Hare in Lynchburg, Virginia. 1870 he's in the Albemarle Co., Virginia census H.
