    1. Re: [VIA-L] Those in William Via's Household
    2. Judy, Thanks for the input on the 5 tithables in William Via's household. Being that Robert Via first shows up in the Personal Property Tax Lists of Amherst County in 1795, he may have been born as early as 1774. That is, if the age of 21 was criteria to appear on the tax rolls. Besides, he did appear as a member of a road gang in 1794. Again, thanks for the input. Jeff Viar

    3. I have some for what its worth. Robert was on a road gang with William Lane, son of James, in 1794. Ten years old if born 1784. Remove #3 Robert not proven add Patsy Via age unknown. Re; Rowland William was off to war Feb 1779 to Feb 1780 or longer. I know you only have to be there at the laying of the keel-not the launching, as my Doctor, a navy man, told me on my first born. We will never know who these five people were, to many factors are involved, a visiting relative a hired hand etc. Later census records did record names and relation. I have other searching in Tennessee and Texas, so farewell. I know this is still up to debate but if he did come from the Virginia line it would not surprise me to see him in an area with Horsley's. Horsley's and Via's go back to Hanover County. They had strong ties with each other in Albemarle County and in Amherst County. I"m sure we have not totally narrowed down all the connections between these families but to interact with them in Albemarle and Amherst as well as being neighbors in Hanover County there were strong ties. He married Martha Carter in Amherst County on 6 Nov. 1838. He very well may have been named after Rowland's deceased brother. Wit: Leroy Camden, Micajah Pendleton, Hiram McGinnis, Jno. White- head. According to the book by Floyd Benjamin Layne, Patsey, the daughter of William (Waggoner) Layne, married Robert Via. As you can see from the above land records, it was William (waggoner) Layne who wound up buying John Jr.s 72 1/2 acres given by his father. At the time when Robert Via married Patsey Lane in 1804, William Via was the only Via living next to William (waggoner) Layne. William Via and William (waggoner) Layne were neighbors from 1793 to 1807. I think this gives some credence to the belief that Robert Via, who married Patsey Lane, was a son of William & Phebe Via. William Via and wife, Pheaby, to William Camden, L100, 72 1/2 acres---left to William by father. Lines: Susannah Spradling, George Shrader, George Hylton, Webster heirs. Just something to ponder. Jeff Viar

    3. Found this on Robert from Latter Day Saints . His war record shows him enlisted in Feb 1779 to Feb 1780 and again from summer of 1781 until the capture of Cornwallis in Oct 1781. In his petition to Congress of The United States is a sworn statement that Wm Via served 21 months as a regular in the regular and afterward a tour of three month as a malitiaman making 2 years in all. I do not believe that William Via b 1751 Rev War pen #S9513 was married at this time. I will not believe that this Robert is from William 1751. With first born son John b 1786, it does not add up. In the naming fashion of the time the name John is appropriate after John b 1710 father of William b 1751. I find no Roberts in John Via b 1710 family. Jeff stick with what you believe also. I was in Security with a world wide company and retired after 25 years in Security work. I made many reports. I made the mistake of using the term, I assume, one time. BV
