Foot note to spellings would be best in my humble opinion. Jim Via

That way when I was searching I could find the person I was looking for regardless of the spelling. In the event fields I created a category for name spelling and added the various spellings I found for an individual. But I have started editing that method because in later generations the spellings used seemed to stay consistent down to current generations. So if I find documentation such as census records, headstone inscriptions, obituary notices, etc. and it seems to appear that that line took a particular spelling I am changing the names in my database to reflect their spelling. Better a little inconvenience for me than to misrepresent a familys name. Judy
Good Afternoon!!! Working in Gallia County, Ohio. Spellings are never Via always Vier, Viers, Viar, Viars, etc. So will go with the tombstone method. Just a interesting fact. A descendant family in Elkton, VA. The name spelled three different ways and they were all brothers and sisters buried in the same plot. Had to laugh. The only thing that got my attention was the middle name "Maupin". Several children in the family only one married, others died single and they all lived in the same area. So they had to have known the spellings was different. Good Morning, Group!!! Would like some comments on what spelling to use for the Via family? Should I use the Via, or the names used on their tombstones, or the names in the Census? I want to make it easy for future generations to verfy my work. Should I put in a footnote explaining the different spellings? William Albertson [email protected]

I am copying all > the Berry families from the 1810 Census in Madison, Augusta, Albemarle, and > Rockingham Counties in VA. William, In checking the Rowland Berry you mention above it doesn't look like he would be a descendent of Mary Via Berry. On-line info suggests his father was Elisha Berry and Frances Sampson and the father of Elisha Berry was John Berry and wife Jemima. In looking at the processioning records of St Pauls Parish on page 343 in mentions William Berrys orphans in area 6, November 17, 1755. On page 348 for November 17, 1755 it lists Mary Berry. So assuming this is Mary Via Berry the records on 343 pertaining to William Berry do not appear to give us the name of Mary's husband. She's listed in area 11. In looking through some other records I find a George Berry in Hanover county in 1733. On petition of Charles Barrett it is ordered that John Kimbro Senr, George Berry, John Henson and John Harris do value the buildings works and Improvements with Regard to expenses on 400 acres belonging to the petitioner on the North branch of the North fork of the Little River and make report at the next court. The interesting part of this is George Berry signed with his mark - a B. I've often wondered why some of the Via's used as their mark a signed letter. In 1733 Frances Horsley wife of Robert Horsley (father & mother of Rowland Horsley) signed Robert's will with her mark - the letter F. Another record found - Geo Berry 180 acres, 13 Nov 1756 on North side Pounding Creek by John Staples, joining Wm Berry, Matt Mills, Andr Greenhors. Transferredc to Gaml Baley. (This is from Land Lying in Albemarle County). Same source for the following: Benjamin Chenault, 49 acres, 18 Dec 1760 on head of a branch of North Hardware River, joining Jon Fieldes, Wm Berry, Wm Nelson Esq. Transferred to Nathan Shelton and from Shelton to John Clarkson. Clifton Rodes, 152 acres, Dec 5, 1783 lying on the South side of Mechums river and the branches thereof, by William Hay, joining Wm Berry, Hen Mills, Jno Thomas. In checking the processioning records of St Pauls Parish, Mary Berry was listed in precinct or area 11 on November 17, 1755. The next processioning took place in 1759. She is not listed in precinct 11 but her previous neighbors are all still there. So either Mary died in that 4 year span or like so many others she left the area. To be continued...... Judy
William, Please check St. Paul's Parish Records. Hanover Co. VA Mary's land is Processioned, other entries refer to William Berry's Orphans. Elaine I enjoyed the site at rootsweb. I just wanted you to know that you put a m in your name instead of a n after the "contact"........ Hope you are doing well. I am just trying to survive the next couple of weeks and then I will get a small break. Also I am going to visit Toronto Canada for a conference of religious scholars, to talk about a Native American book three of them have written. I am looking forward to seeing the country there. Maybe even a little snow. Well take care and have fun. cya Larry
Hi, I have over 600 certificates on my family tree. I have submitted the names & dates on Australasian-Birth, Death, and Marriage Exchange http://www.rootsweb.com/~ausbdm/ Go ALL the way down to INTERNATIONAL BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES EXCHANGES, then Click on United States of America. Then Click on the letter you want in Birth or Death or Marriages (I have LOTS of VIA marriages)!! If you see a certificate you want a copy of, just email me the names & dates and I'll send it right out to you. Maybe, if you have some certificates you want to Submit, go to the bottom of the page, pass Marriages, you will see Submit Your Certificates. It is real easy. I have found a few lost cousins this way. GOOD LUCK!!! Elaine =^..^=
