    1. [VIA-L] interesting tidbits
    2. Many of you probably are aware of the following tidbits but some are new to me so I'm sure some will be new to others in our group. Nothing new but interesting. According to "Men of Matadequin", June Banks Evans, Bryn Ffyliaid Publications, 1985..... 1707/8...at that time women did not hold title to land in their own name. At the wife's death land would revert either to a male heir or become crown property to be reassigned. Land could not be distributed to heirs until the youngest child came of age. 1706 part of St Peter's was divided, the portion above the mouth of Matadequin Creek becoming St. Paul's. A 1689 list of landholders in New Kent Count shows no Via's. Steph Moon, Nic Gentry, Rouland Horsley, Robt Lancaster, James Blackwell, Robt Thomson, Edw Burnett, Jno Talle are listed in this list...no Via's. (SO WHERE WAS AMER VIA IN 1689???) I have often wondered why William Via did not show up in the processioning records of St. Paul's Parish until 1731. Maybe the above info regarding land not being distributed until the youngest child came of age had some bearing on this issue. This would also account for the entries we often see in things like personal property or land tax records that for years say "estate of". This would tend to indicate then that there were children not of age. Judy

    3. Don't know if this will help, but Robert Viers had a son named William who moved down the Ohio river between Cincinnati and Louisville. He was a prosperous store keeper, the age would be about right for one of his children. I don't think I have much on his line or the name of his wife. Check Ky counties between those two towns. I have often thought it was Robert's brother > William who married Patsey Moon. No, she married a William from Maryland. I really don't remember his middle name but the name was listed in records in both places. Everything is packed away, I'd have to do some digging to find out the documents. It was rather unusual because he used his full name often, probably to avoid confusion with other Williams. > > Do you know if Patsey and her husband lived in Lewis Co? They lived just over the line in Mason County. His brother was first school teacher in Lewis County which was part of Mason County when he first came. Evidently there were large tracts of land her father had received for Rev War service. They both are listed on the deed transfers of these lands when they were sold. Later, he and his brother moved south to live near Gideon Via.... And some of the records sign Gideon's last name as Vier. > > Judy > Sue

She and her husband's name were on land records several times in Kentucky land sales. Her husband was definitely from the Maryland Veir (same name, same age, and a brother mentioned in his father's will who had already gone to Lewis County, Ky.) > > If I remember correctly your Robert's birth day and birth month are identical > or almost identical to the Robert son of David Via and Frances Stringer. I > know the year on his headstone if off by what?? 5 years? That is not an > uncommon mistake. Many many headstones are incorrect. Nope the birthday and birth month are off and so is the age. He may have been the son of David Via but the age evidence is pretty convincing. His actual age is stated in his will, it's easy to figure out how old he was by looking at census records, too. BTW, he must have been quite a character. Several years after his wife died, he was married (by shotgun) to a much younger woman. (He was nearly 70, I think.) They had three small children, then she died and he was left, an old man, with three children under the age of ten. How do I know it was a shotgun wedding? Well, the birth of their son was extremely close to the marriage date. Sue > > The reason I ask about Patsey Moon marrying a Maryland Vier/Veir is because > her family lived in Virginia. If I remember correctly your Robert's birth day and birth month are identical or almost identical to the Robert son of David Via and Frances Stringer. I know the year on his headstone if off by what?? 5 years? That is not an uncommon mistake. Many many headstones are incorrect. The reason I ask about Patsey Moon marrying a Maryland Vier/Veir is because her family lived in Virginia. I have often thought it was Robert's brother William who married Patsey Moon. Do you know if Patsey and her husband lived in Lewis Co? Judy

Robert Viars/Vier/etc (too many spellings to list). Born in 1755, next found as a Rev War soldier in Botetort Co in 1780s. Captain Baird's unit, I think. I'm quite suspicious there was some connection with the Tomer/Thomas family of the Germanna Colony (Culpeper Co. Va)since a couple of them were in the same outfit and one of Robert's granddaughters married a Thomas in Ky. Many of the Germanna Thomases moved to the same county (Mason/Lewis) as Robert. Married Mary Carpenter in Botetort. The Carpenters were very early settlers in the Cow Pasture area. And were from Long Island originally. Next they were in the Lewisburg/Greenbriar Co. area of WV for several years. Mary is mentioned in her father's will as Mary Vier. The family bought land in Mason County around 1800. The area became Lewis County around 1802. An interesting factoid, Thomas Jefferson's daughter married a Lewis and died and is buried in Lewis County. I'm also related to a Lewis family that married into another line. I don't think these Lewises are related to Jefferson's son-in-law but that is a possibility. Anyway, Botetort isn't far from Amherst County and several Horsleys are buried in the family plot. I never have been able to pin down exactly who Robert's parents were since his age does not match the young Robert mentioned in early Botetort records. Another interesting fact, several of the Maryland Vear/Veirs line settled in Lewis and Mason counties. One was married to Patsey Moon. I really don't believe in coincidences. > Judy Sue

    2. Does anyone has access to any of the death records for the above counties? I'm looking for death records on the following, the notation is the last record I've found for them: Keziah Via (female) 1870 Amherst Co., Va census Samuel Via - 1870 Appomattox Co., Va. census Martin Via - 1880 Campbell Co., Va. census George Via - 1870 Appomattox Co., Va. census James E. Via were brothers, listed in personal property tax records as the son of Nancy Via. Edward and Jacob were living next door to each other in the 1850 Campbell Co., Va census and were probably brothers. I'd like to be able to put the above named persons in the correct family lines and hope if I can find death records for them it will help. Thank you, Judy

    3. Good Morning, Via Group!!! Twelve or thirteen years ago while working on the family of Judith Maupin Epperson I came upon this information. It was not until recently that I figured out the complete line. Wm Amer Via Jean Via & Robert Thompson (almost proven) Hannah Thompson & David Epperson, Sr. John Epperson & Alcey Favor Randolph Walker Epperson & Drucilla Whitmire Phoebe Epperson & George Hearst William Randolph Hearst I have not heard from anyone on this line, but according to an article in the Newspaper in Franklin Co. Missouri where Pheobe Epperson lived it is correct. Phoebe was a school teacher and is being given credit for starting the PTA. Anyone close to this line? William Albertson [email protected]
