Coat of Arms were generally issued by the ruler (king, queen, etc) of the time to an individual and his immediate family. If you consider the standing of our family in France during the 1600's, in exile and being proscuted/executed by the catholic church for being protestant, I find it highly unlikely that our family was ever issued a COA. They were rare, unique to an individual and did not actually belong to a 'family'. 99% of the family 'coat of arms' you see are fakes. Judy, I would definitely like to learn more about the family of Gabriel Maupin & wife Marie. As well as my specific line which is as follows: Gabriel Maupin/Marie Hersent Daniel Maupin/Margaret Via Margaret Maupin/Robert Miller Mary Ann Miller/Peter Thornton I have collected a lot of deed and marriage extracts from Virginia, but sometimes it's hard to figure out who they relate to since there were so many Maupin's. And, of course, so many Maupins have married into some of my other lines. I am most interested in the early lines. I am also interested in the following Maupin line as it relates to my Page line somehow. Daniel Maupin/Margaret Via John Maupin/Frances Dabney (I am also a Dabney descendant) John Maupin/Sarah Crosthwait John Maupin/Frances Andrew Maupin/Cynthia Ward Isaac Blevins Maupin/Sennah Catherine Page What is the name of Dorothy's book? William stated in his Rev War pension claim that he was born in 1756 in King and Queen Co., Virginia. King and Queen county was created in 1691 from New Kent. I am not familiar with all the records that may exist for King and Queen County but believe they have land records beginning in 1782. Have you looked at these records to see if there were any Viars etc in that county at that time? From what little I know about William it does not appear as though his parents made to move to North Carolina so maybe you could find something in the land records of King and Queen County. William supposedly had a brother David according to his pension record. Yet I haven't been able to find him in North Carolina. I wonder if he went back to Virginia. Judy

Judy, Thank you for the clarification on Marie, wife of Gabriel Maupin. Can you recommend any good sources for the Maupin family? Perhaps I misunderstood William's posting on Boyce Miller. Since the article was reprinted in the book Genealogies of Virginia Families, maybe that's the book he was referring to. Hello All again, I forgot to add I have a copy Robert Franklin Viars death certificate which plainly gives his father as John and the informate was his son. I think the son would know who his Grandfather was don't you? Sorry I don't mean to sound critical but search it all out and don't just attach it to someone elses work without knowing what you have. Boy I sound mean but don't mean it that way. Marlene
Daggone you guys. All of you seem to have so much luck or something tracing your lines and I am still "stuck" on my William Viars from North Carolina. Am I still the lone ranger working on this line? Don't get me wrong I am happy for you. It just seems I can't locate anyone else working on this line that might have something to help me in one way or another. So many of my line of researchers want to hook us up with Noah Viers and Mary Trusler who was married on Sept 6 1841. There is no way he can possibly be the father of Robert Franklin Viars. I don't want to sound ignorant, but Marie Spencer was not the wife of Gabriel Maupin? I have not researched this line as much as I should have. I received the name of Marie Spencer, daughter of an Earl Spencer from an article on the Maupin Family by W. G. Stanard. I would like to mention that the W H Miller book "Histories and Genealogies" is available in pdf format as part of the Family & Local Histories collection at Genealogy.com Did Boyce Miller also write a book on the Miller family? I have a copy of his journal article, but had not heard of the book. Thanks, Michele -----Original Message----- From: Maupin Reunion [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 24, 2003 11:06 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VIA-L] source of the forester info Good Morning, Via Group!!! The Miller book was printed about 1907. William Miller made several trips to Albemarle County working on his book. He also made trips to Tennessee, all by train to gather information. He interview many decendants of the Maupin family and various other families covered in the book. Over the thirty years I have worked on the Maupins I have been told by several descendants about William Miller contacting their family by mail requestion famly data. If you will notice in Miller's book most data is give without dates. I can tell you that William Miller was very careful not to embarrass any members of the family by including data that might reflect badly on specific people. Dr. Socrates Maupin was the first genealogist in the Maupin family. He started about 1830 and worked until his death in 1871. In 1837 he drew up the first Maupin Family Tree on a large sheet and it from this that we know basically the first four generations of the Maupin line. Dr. Socrates Maupin's papers are at the Alderman Library in Charlottesville. For many years apparently these papers circulated by mail to various family members. This was at a time when copiers were not available. Many of the pages disappeared and the remaining pages were donated to Alderman by Dr. Socrates Maupin, Grandaughter, I believe. Dorothy Maupin Shaffett was given the original copy of the family chart, which she has now given to the Alderman Library also. I will ask Dorothy the next time I talk with her if she ever knew where the "Forester" story came from. The most likely source is the Maupin of Norfolk area of Virginia, Gabriel, II's Line. It is this line that first made public the story of Marie Hersent being Mary Spencer of England, of Royal ancestry. This is, we now know, untrue. There were 500 copies of William H. Miller's book printed. Most were bount in a green cover and a few were brown leather bound. I have probabaly seen over 30 copies of this book in the past thirty years. I was reprinted once by a publisher out of Ohio. If a third printing was done I have not hear of it. For those of you who would like to read the Miller book, I know of only one circulating copy. This copy, a second copy, is at the Waynesboro Public Library in Waynesboro, Virginia. While I living in White Hall I checked it out many many times. It is available through inter-library loan and if you will check you local library they can probably order it for you. Since I had dismissed the story of the Via's working for the Maupins in France I cannot honestly tell you if it is in Millers book. But as I said I will ask Dorothy and see if she knows its origin. The Boyce Miller book, of which there is a copy in Standardsville, Greene County, VA I have read. There is information taken from Dr. Socrates Maupin notes that must have been taken before the documents were given to Alderman, because this data is not in the current copy of the notes. As I said people removed pages over the years and the remainder are at Alderman Library, Charlottesville. If anyone has additional questions concerning the above please post your questions and I will try and answer them or refer you to someone who can. Hello! I am a descendant of Sparrell Via, brother of Jackson son of Anedrson and Jane. Do you have any details of Sparrell's service in the CSA? I know that he served with his brother in the 36th VA. Also, I had heard that his brother Anderson Jr. started in the CSA and ended up in the Union Army. Do you have any info on this? Thanks for your help. Mark Via
I would like to have the coat of arms. Thanks for sharing! Mark Via
