Genealogy 9/8/2000 Lat year I shared some of my Genealogy information to a list that I belong to,( NOT THIS ONE!) and they came out of the woodwork. ( I was a little leary to post here for a while because of this) Maybe it's just me, wherever I post anything, they come after me, I have been almost kicked off two humor lists because of the stories I post. (not from the list owner, but the rude people on them) I can't believe some of these people, they ask for information they have been looking for for thousands of years, ( well maybe 10 years at least) you send it to them and instead of saying "Thank you for that information, I have been looking everywhere for it", they say "And just WHERE did you find THAT?" "Where is your source of proof?" " I NEED the name of the book where you found that AND the page number!" I just tell them, "hey, it's a place for you to go to and find your proof" jeeezzzzzzzz. they either want documentated information with page and number or none at all. Of course this is just some, probably the professional genealogist, and that for sure is not me. I wouldn't care if any information on the DIHEL family came by bus, carried by a two headed pigmy, written on toilet paper in lipstick. I WANT it. I surely wouldn't brow beat the giver. I like to help people find people, but I guess you run into all kinds in the genealogy world. I just do this for fun and my own information, so I am the pitts on sources. But how would you explain to someone what your sources are on a man born in 1600.? "I talked to the midwife?", " I have his bible?" , "His mother wrote me a letter?", "Moses wrote it in stone?" heck, what kind of a source are you going to find that far back. I just take it as I get it, don't care where it came from. Pretty soon they will want a piece of the boat he come over in with his name carved in it. But then they will want to know HOW I know that he was the one doing the carving. Who the hell has the documentation on the BIBLE? Sorry to have taken up your time, but there was no one to share this little tidbit with. Just like a lady said the other day, that she could go clear back to 63 B.C. Now there is where I would like to see documentation. Maybe Christ was her ancestor's neighbor. Well good for her, I imagine she can pick her lineage out of the old testament Dianne
I just saw a two headed pigmy run down the street with toilet paper stuck on his shoe, does that help? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dianne" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2000 12:26 PM Subject: [VESTAL-L] genealogy > > Genealogy > 9/8/2000 > > Lat year I shared some of my Genealogy information to a list that I belong > to,( NOT THIS ONE!) > and they came out of the woodwork. Thanks to everybody for sharing your information. But please don't be offended that some of us ask if you have a source. It's not that we're ungrateful or are doubting you personally. After you have been looking for something for ten years or more, many times you are lead to believe that someone has finally found something that will verify all the stuff written eons ago in great auntie's undocumented genealogy. What you usually eventually find out is that this "new" source is simply someone else discovering the old original material all over again (for the jillionth time) and you are no further along at all. You then must explain to everyone who wasn't aware of this ancient book, that all her stuff seems to have just been made up to join the Colonial Dames and has not been really proven by anyone.
