My mother's Family Bible information listed her grandmother's last name as Vessel and then as Vestal in another place. Some of her sibblings believed she was a Vessel while others said Vestal. When I searched the Census Records for Lamar Co., Texas, I found her listed as a Vestal. My g grandmother was Rachel Elizabeth Vestal d/o Thomas and Rachel G. Caviness Vestal (from Chatham Co., NC). My question is, have any of you seen Vessel and Vestal used interchangeably? I rather suspect that this was simply a mistake on my family's part since Rachel Elizabeth Vestal died soon after my grandmother was born. They certainly knew very little about their grandmothers family. Any comments? Gene Key
I bet you're right. A family mistake probably. I would think the only time these two might be confused/used interchangably would have been back in a time when spelling/writing were not standardized.
