    2. Andy I an not a decendant of William but my wife is a Vestal that comes down a different line. My interest in William is a part of the larger picture. I am working on a database of the entire Vestal family from William and Alice Glover on down. I believe there are only three real choices for the parents of your William. However,I could be wrong. Lines that decend from William Vestal and Elizabeth Mercer 1.William Vestal (1723) had no male heirs. 2.John Vestal/Ann Potts had 3 sons, their lines are unknown to me at this time so they are one possibility. 3.Thomas Vestal/Elizabeth Davis There lines are to well documented.I just do not believe there is anywhere to fit William in that line. 4.James Vestal Sr./ Jay,Allen,Casady While William (1792) is a possibility,I do not believe that he is the right William because Williams father was a William (1759) and you would not think that a William Sr. would have a William for a father. Thomas Vestal (1766) /Ann Martin married Oct. 4,1791 in Surry Co,NC is a likely choice. The 2nd possibility. The time frame is right, his decendants are unknown and William Sr. oldest son was named Thomas (from the info that I have) The rest of James Vestal Sr. decendants are well documented and the birth dates and marrage dates do not leave very much room to add anyone in the 1802 time frame. 5.David Anthony Vestal/Sarah Chamness This line is also very well documented, except for Nathan Vestal (1763 to 1834) spouse unknown He is the third likely choice. All of Davids other children have wifes and Children accounted for. This is all the lines that decend from William Vestal and Elizabeth Mercer and accounts for all of his male heirs.

    2. Tony, I am a desendant of William Vestal b. 1802. I am almost positive that the Wm from 1792 is not the one. He did have three wives and lived to 1894 and died in Texas. I have several cousin , who are also searching for Wm's parents. If you are also a descendant, please write and tell me how. Thanks Andy McCloskey

    1. [VESTAL-L] Re: WILLIAM VESTAL
    2. I am not a VESTAL and am only indirectly researching them. I subscribed to VESTAL-L with the hope of finding a VESTAL with a EMREY-LLOYD-STEWART connection. They were associated in 1700/1800's in PA, VA, SC. A family heritage book for JOHN and PRUDENCE EMREY LOYD gives some early information about VESTAL families in PA, VA, NC that I would like to share with you: WILLIAM VESTAL I married ALCE (ALICE ?). He was an iron-maker and died in 1709. Maiden name for Alce may have been MENDENHALL. A Benjamin MENDENHALL of Concord Township, PA deeded to Alce in 1709 (the year William died) land which he had originally deeded to William. William and Alce raised their children as Quakers but Alce joined "7th Day Baptists" in 1697. WILLIAM VESTAL II (son of WILLIAM I and ALCE) died in 1745 in VA. He married ELIZABETH ___?___. They were Quakers. They lived in Bradford and Birmingham Townships, Chester Co, PA before moving to VA between 1729-1734. They were associated with iron-making and blacksmithing families. In 1742 William formed a company and built a "bloomery" on his land for processing iron ore into iron bars. He established a ferry from his land across the Shenandoah River and this led to the gap in the Blue Ridge Mtns. above his ferry to be named Vestal Gap (now Key's Gap). That land was in Orange Co, VA which in 1743 became Frederick Co., and in 1757 became Berkeley Co. It is now in Jefferson Co, W. VA. Elizabeth had a certificate of membership with the Concord Monthly Meeting (PA), transferred to Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Orange/Frederick Co., VA, transferred to Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange/Alamance Co., NC. SONS OF WILLIAM II and ELIZABETH: 1. WILLIAM VESTAL III 2. JOHN VESTAL married ANN POTTS of Loudoun Co, VA. John was an iron-maker. He and his father WM II were closely associated with the Potts family, a blacksmithing/iron-making family. NOW---For that VESTAL-EMREY-LLOYD-STEWART connection: On Aug. 11, 1750, Elizabeth Vestal of Frederick Co., VA gave power of attorney to "my trusty friend STEPHEN EMORY". Witness: Sam'l Baldwin, John Hardin, Wm. Vestal, John Vestal. On Aug. 26, 1750, Wm. Vestal III (son/Eliz.) sold to John Hardin and George Johnson a 285-ac tract that had been granted to his father, Wm. Vestal II, on Oct. 3, 1734. Witness: Hy West, G. Washington (THE GEORGE WASHINGTON!), Sam'l Walker, Robert Worthington, STEPHEN EMMERY, William Davis. **STEPHEN EMREY was a literate, prosperous blacksmith. He was an early settler in Loudoun Co., VA. living there 1758-1800. Can anyone connect with Stephen Emrey? Do you know if Stephen is related to PRUDENCE EMREY LOYD or GEORGE EMREY?

I have their son William as being born in1792.This may or may not be the year of his birth. Even being born in 1792 he would have been able to father all of the children that are thought to belong to William. His last child was Susan Vestal b.1851. William would have been about 60/61 years old.Old but not to old to father children. I have E-mailed Tim and asked him where he found the above information but do not have an answer yet. Anyway,I thought I pass it by the group and see if anyone had any thoughts on this. If he has proof to back it up it would fill in a big piece of the Vestal family tree. Tony

They had 7 children: George, Katy, Sarah, Margaret, John, Nancy, and Zimri. George and family resided in Chatham Co. in 1800 and in Randolph County in 1810. Any idea who this Miss Vestal might be? Thanks -- Donna Regen <lregen@onramp.net>

    3. Harice, Most of the earlier Vestal information came from the Quaker's Meetings, and are listed in the Quaker books. Most genealogy libraries will have these books. Just ask the librarian. Some word of caution, though, I have heard that some of that could have been incorrectly translated. For a more correct info, you would have to view the actual Quaker records. Where these are located, I don't know. Have any of these Quaker records been put on a webpage now? There were two pamplets or booklets which others have written, but I don't have that info right now. One of these was retyped by one of our members, and it should be in our archives. At the beginning of this list in Jan. 1997, we did list the sources (or we tried). Other info may have come from bibles, or family knowledge. If it is family knowledge, you can take this, and try to find additional sources, like the deeds, probate, etc. Jeff, I'm here, and I'm not. It's so hard to even catch up at this point. My Mom will still need help. My aunt and uncle had 5 ft. of water in their home, and really feel for them. We saw them Sunday, and they look so tired. My in laws have a ranch in San Felipe, and the road was totally washed out. There is about a 12 ft. gape, and about that deep. We noticed that fence posts were down in several locations, especially where the road washed out. My brother video taped of all this, and the whole area looked like a large lake!!!!! I have never seen anything like that in all of my life! Harice, has sent her husband's line, we sure would like to see some of your newer folks lines, too! Or, a repost of some of our older members, too!!! Maybe you can discuss a problem we are having in finding proof of some of our older ancestors???? Or perhaps we may have some new members in locations which some of these records may be located???? And can help us out? Take care, >From a tired Pat! 2. Thomas Vestal b.September 8,1727 Chester Co.,Penn. d. June 12,1813 Chatham Co.,North Carolina Married Mary Unk. December 1,1751 Frederick Co.,Virginia Married 2nd Elizabeth Davis (Davies) September 7,1754 Chatham Co.,NC b.December 12,1737 Newton,Chester Co.,Penn. d.July 21,1823 Chatham,NC son of Thomas & Elizabeth William Vestal b.November 29,1759 Orange Co.,NC d.October 13,1828 Chatham Co.,NC Married Mary Wheeler February 10,1791 Chatham Co.,NC b. August 1,1771 Orange Co.,NC d. October 19,1828 Chatham Co.,NC (The above is found in Quaker records) son of William & Mary Thomas Vestal b. November 18,1791 Chatham Co.,NC d. Unk. Married Mary Brower November 9,1812 Randolf Co.,NC (North Carolina Marriages to 1825) I do not follow how William Vestal (1792-1863 ) who married Sarah Moore could be the son of Thomas Vestal and Mary Brower if William was born in 1792 and Thomas was born on November 18,1791. It is a possibility that Samuel Vestal (1817-1891) could be a son of Thomas & Mary. The birthdays would work for that. The sons that I have listed for Thomas Vestal & Mary Brower are Oliver Vestal (b.1821),Riley Vestal (b.1821),and Thomas Vestal (b.1830). There is a 9 year gap (from the date that they married to the first child that I have listed) that is missing that could hold unknown children. Tony

    2. Thank you, Tony, for Miss Brower's first name and it's source. We also were unaware of the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. I must admit that I am surprised at its completeness, since the Quaker records we searched in Indiana (where Bob's immediate ancestors lived) referred to members only as "Sister _____" or "Brother _____." We didn't see Bob's 19th and 20th century ancestors on your list. If you would them, plus siblings, we'll be glad to help your list top 5,000. Thanks again--and for your list which we've printed out. Harice

    2. The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy (by William Wade Hinshaw ) is found on Ancestry.com. All 6 volumes are included." It references approximately 445,000 individuals with Quaker ancestry in New Jersey,New York, the Carolinas, Ohio,Pennsylvania,Tennessee, and Virginia; and covers the years 1750-1930". It contains around 200 to 300 references to Vestals.

Harice > > Hi Harice and others! It is always wise to list your source of where you obtained the information, for example, like a birth, death, marriage certificate, census records, or info from any books, or deeds or probate records. This way, you will know, hopefully, that this info should be correct, etc. Especially, if you decide to join DAR, or another type of assoc. You will need all this proof to join. If this is for yourself, instead of having piles or stacks of papers, put all this info into a lg. 3 ring binder, with top loading (acid free) clear sleeves. Then slide your certificates, copies of probate, deed records behind the family group sheet of your ancestor. Or put in tabs of each ancestral surname line, and put papers/copies in that ancestor(s). If you have lots and lots of info, then start a separate file (legal usually) folders, and put in papers there. Copies of the original census record, passenger lists, etc. Make a separate file for each direct ancestor couple. But still do your 3 ring binder. This you can take with you the genealogy library, so you will have this handy when you need to look something up, and not duplicate yours or others research. A good idea, when coping and sending info to others, put your name and address on those copies, so when it is passed on to another researcher/relative, they will know where that info came from. Harice, who are your Vestal ancestors? Pat Bagwell Listowner
