Ginny, you ask for responses to your good information on John Vestal, son of William and Elizabeth. I have that John died about 1764 without a will for that year the court named William as heir and 1/3 the estate reserved for John's widow, Ann, during her lifetime. Unfortunately, I don't have the reference citation at my fingertips but surely it is in Berkeley Co VA court orders. The 1776 record, I believe, is the inventory of the estate. Her father was Madison Thomas Vestal, b: February 1852 in Illinois. Her mother was Julie Lavina Green, b: Sep 1854 also in Illinois. Madisons father was from North Carolina. Here's the way I think it is: William4 Vestal (John3/William2/William 1 Sr. and Alice Glover) was the oldest son of John3 Vestal and Ann Potts. As such, he was the heir of John Vestal. He died about 1783; his heir was his son William5. William5 was referred to in Deed book 17, Berkeley Co., VA; page 105; February 3, 1801 "Suit of chancery by John Potts and Elizabeth Ozborn against William Vestall, heir at law of William Vestall, decd., who was heir at law to John Vestal decd...." This makes the heir of John referred to in William3's(William2/William1 Sr. and Alice Glover)will to be William5 (William4/John3/William2/William1) Vestal, grandson of John Vestal, recognized by law as John's heir. William5 mentioned in William3's will would have been a youngster at the time of William3's will (Are all these Williams confusing, or what!!). And the John who signed William3's will? Of the five known sons of William Vestal JR and Elizabeth Mercer [William, John, Thomas, James Sr. and David, three [John, Thomas and James] are known to have sons named John. John Vestal's John was born about 1756; Thomas Vestal's John was born in 1770; James Sr's John was born about 1771. To have signed William3's will, John Vestal would have had to be at least 18 [I think!]--born 1769 or before. This would leave John4 (John3/William2/William1) as a possibility - did he leave Berkeley Co., VA and travel to NC to be there in time to sign his uncle's will? In 1787, he was listed on the Berkeley Co. Tax rolls. John4(Thomas3/William2/William1) would have been 17 years old (his DOB is known to be 2 Aug 1770). John4(James3/William2/William1) may have been about 16 years old. Anyway, those are my musings on the subject. .... This pinpoints the birthdate of William as about 1750. Ancestors are further indicated by the following 1801 Deed suit: "John Potts and Elizabeth Ozborn against William Vestall, heir at law of William Vestall, decd., who was heir at law to John Vestall decd....). There is a William Vestal in the 1850 census, Jeferson Co., VA (1 male 26-45, 1 female 26-45; 1 female under 10; In 1820 census, 1 male 16-18; 2 males 16-26; 1 male 26-45; 1 fwemale 45 & up. Is this the same William? If so, where did the "extra" males come from? William is not listed in the 1830 census of VA. 2. Elizabeth Vestal, b. abt 1754, Frederick Co., VA;; died 25 Nov 1779, Ohio Co., VA; mar 3 Aug 1772 to Col. George Beeler (disowned by Quakers for marrying outside the faith) 3. Mary Vestal, b. abt 1755 married a Mr. Blair in 1774 (disowned by Quakers for marrying outside the faith) There are two PROBABLE other childre of John Vestal and Ann Potts: These three children are proven; Mary and Elizabeth appear in the Hinshaw records at the time of their disownment, and are mentnioned as the daughters of John and Ann Potts Vestal. 4. John Vestal, Jr. This is the John Vestal who was complained of in Hinshaw for traiing in the military service and hiring a substitute to go to war. (5-3-1779); He is listed in the 1787 Census of VA, Vol II, p. 1435 (Berkeley Co., WV Personal PRoperty Tax, 1787, List B. He is not listed in the 1810 census of Jefferson Co., VA, where the Vestals lived, nor in subsequent censuses. I know nothing further about him. 5. David Vestal, b. abt 1759, Frederick Co., VA. David was disowned in 1786 by the Quakers for not attending meetings. He appears in the 1787 Census of VA (Berkeley Co.); he is on the 1800 Berkeley Co., VA Tax list. In the 1810 census of Jefferson Co., VA, p. 178 he appears with 1 male under 10; 1 male 10-16; 2 males 16-26; 1 male over 45, 2 females under 10; 1 female 16-26; 1 female over 45. He is also in the 1820 census of Jefferson Co, but not in the 1830 census. I have been unable to find his wife. There are at least 5 Vestals I have been unable to place. John Vestal, b. abt 1780, married 11 Mar 1801, Berkeley Co., to Susannah Rodgers. Possible son of David Vestal. David Vestal, b. abt 1790 in VA; m 23 Oct 1817, Loudoun Co., VA to Mary Blincoe. George Vestal, b. 3 Oct 1800, Jefferson Co., VA; died 28 jun 1868, Washington Twp., Muskingum Co., OH; mar 20 Nov 1828, Jefferson Co., VA to Ann Clothier Anderson. POSSIBLE son of David. Julia Ann Vestal, b 1803, VA; mar 11 apr 1828, Delaware Co., IN to Jacob Kuhn. Jane Anne Vestal, b. 1802, VA; mar 18 Nov 1823, Jefferson Co., VA to James McKinney. These last five are POSSIBLE children of David. And I tentatively place them as his children because there's no one else around at this time. They're not William's (son of John and Ann Potts) children; The last four could possible belong to William, JR. (son of William Sr. and Hannah Potts), but since David was the one who lived longest in Berkeley/Jefferson Co. (see census notes), I believe they are his children. When a husband of one and the wife of the other died the remaining spouses married. There were 11 VESTAL children between the 3 marriages, all of the same HOWE/HOW & VESTAL lines. I have a Sarah Vestal in the 1850 Surry N.Carolina census that lives with Joseph and Barbiry Vestal Steelman. lists her age as 52 years and blind. any connection? She is not shown in the census with the family after.The family went to Texas.
