    3. Eleanor, I think I can help dispell some of the confusion, but not all. Sarah Chamness, daughter of Anthony Chamness and Sarah Cole, married David Vestal, son of William Vestal Jr and Elizabeth Mercer, on 25 Sep 1759 at the Cane Creek MM, Chatham Co., NC. They had a daughter, Sarah Chamness Vestal, who married her first cousin, William Vestal (son of James Vestal and Mary Jay(?)) before 1781. Sarah Chamness Vestal (the dau of David Vestal and Sarah Chamness) and her husband & first cousin, were disowned in 1786 by the Quakers for the marriage. I don't have any info on McCulloughs, but the name Easter Moore sounds familiar. I'll try to figure out where it comes in. Hope someone else can help you with your descent. .... Ginny

    3. Hello: In trying to figure out my Vestal ancestors, I have been storing the information from the list and I'm more confused than ever after reading all of it.......everyone seems to have Sarah Chamness married to different people.....some have her married to David Vestal and others state that she was married to William Vestal. I have always been told that I descend from Thomas Vestal and Elizabeth Davis, but a cousin in MO states that we descend from William Vestal and Sarah Chamness.... What I had, working from me back, is that my grandmother was Georgetta McCullough, daughter of William Vestal McCullough, son of Jemima Vestal, daughter of William Vestal and Easter Moore, son of William Vestal and ?, son of Thomas Vestal and Elizabeth Davis, son of William Vestal and Elizabeth Mercer, son of William Vestal and Alice Glover.... where it seems to get confused is whether I descend from Thomas and Elizabeth or William and ? or who????? Can someone please help? Eleanor

I need someone to take over (maybe temporary) the Vestal e-mail list. I just haven't had the time to do the things for the list like I used to, and I really would like to see the list very active again. If someone here, can do this for me, I certainly will appreciate this. I really don't want to close the list down, so please, will someone volunteer? In my signature below, are the instructions to sub and unsub again. Please put this in a handy place, in the event you change email addresses, or want to unsub. Remember you need to unsubscribe your old email address while that is still available, and then subscribe your new email address. You might tell them to also go to the rootsweb website to unsubscribe from there. That might be easier. 1. [VESTAL-L] Vestal Genealogy Boards
    2. Ginny Bumgarner
    3. I've just set up some Vestal surname boards under RootsWeb's GenConnect. If you are not familiar with GenConnect, check out www.rootsweb.com and select GenConnect. Under Surnames, V, you can select Vestal bible records, wills, pensions, queries, obituaries, deeds and biographies. The idea is for everyone to contribute what they have in these areas. Items can be submitted by anyone, day or night to these boards and can be instantly accessed once posted. I think this will be the easier way for me to submit most of the stuff I've collected from VA and NC on the Vestals, rather than trying to add it to my web page. I know a lot of wills and bios have been submitted on this Vestal list. How about if everyone re-submitted it one more time (you can copy and paste) and we would have a nice tidy collection of Vestalbelia (Vestalmania?) .... Ginny

    2. Charlie David Vestals parents were William Dugan Vestal Jr.(Oct.14,1827 thru Feb. 1890)and Susan Armstrong Steele (abt. 1838 thru ???) married July 27,1871 in Ellis Co.,Texas. The parents of William Dugan Vestal Jr. are William Vestal (1792 thru 1894) and Rachel Dugan (1810 thru 1830).I have the parents of William listed as Capt. William Vestal and Sarah Chamness Vestal. This cannot be proven to my knowledge but is believed by many Vestal researchers. Capt. William Vestal's parents are known to be James Vestal Sr. and Mary Jay.

    2. Ginny asked for reference citation that I thought John Vestal died about 1764. Here's what I have from Abstracts of Virginia's Northern Neck Warants & Surveys, 1697-1784, Vol IV (1987) compiled by Peggy Shomo Joyner: "William Vestal of Berkeley Co. heir of John Vestal, assignee of Capt. Thomas Speak(e), execr of Frederick Co. for whom survd; 3 Sept. 1764-23 Nov. 176_; 400 a. on Lt Cacapehon; adj. Speake's own 390 a.pat., Daniel McLoughling. CC- Daniel McLooughlin & William Bills. Surv. Richard Rigg." N.d.- John Vestal dying without will, deed to issue to his Son & Heir at Law reserving to Ann Vestal 1/3 during Life. and next comes: "William Vestal, heir of John Vestal, assignee of Capt. Thomas Speak, Execr of Frederick; 15 Jan. 1763-3 Feb. 1769; 400 a. on Lt. Cacapehon; adj. his own land, George Andrew's 271 a.pat. CC-Henry Enoch, William Bills. Pilot-Henry Enoch, Junr. Surv. Richard Rigg." The first date is the warrant and the second the survey. Upon rereading this I'm not sure what it really states, but apparently the warrants and surveys were conducted during these dates for John Vestal, rather than William, who was the assignee of Speake. There is no date of the records themselves or of the note at the bottom of the first. Other evidence, including Ginny's, leads me to think I was incorrect is believing John had died in 1764. 3. Bill, would like to see the reference citation. Certainly the 1776 was an estate inventory, and the estate settlement could have been delayed had John died with infant children; delay would usually be until the youngest had reached his majority. However, what about the following records: 1. 1766 - Deed Book G of Loudoun Co., VA, p. 357 (Oct 11, 1770), Philip Feizel and wife Susannah to John Vestal of Frederick Co, VA .... 2. 1768 - Deed book F, of Loudoun co., VA, p 314; Apr 22, 1768, Deed of Release, George William Fairfax to John Vestal of frederick Co., VA... 3. 1769, Jan 19; Deed Book G, p 126, Loudoun Co., VA. Deed of release .... John Nevill and Winifred his wife to John Vestal .... 4. 31 Oct 1771, Frederick Co., VA Deed Book 15, p. 173 - "Wherease John Vestal and Ann his wife ... have sold and conveyed to Benjamin Sedwick the Fee Seimple Estate of anin a certain Tract of Lan situate in County of Frederick containing four hundred and eight five Acres ... Ann Vestal now releases right of dower to above mentioned land...." 5. 1772, 6 July; John Vestal complained of for drinking. Jonathan Perkins appointed to draw testimony against John Vestal and to assist women to draw testimony against Ann Vestal and Elizabeth Bealor. 6. 1772 - Berkeley Co., VA rent rolls, John Vestal. 1775 - Deed of release, Loudoun Co., Va; John Vestal of Berkeley Co., VA. 7. 1772, 1 June; John Vestal consented to his daughter's marriage out of unity ... - John and Ann, with daughter Elizabeth disowned form Hopewell MM for consent to daughter's mou to Col. Bealor (HInshaw, Goose Creek MM, p. 716) Now, these all could be another John Vestal who married another Ann. But I do not know of another John Vestal who would have been of age in these years. .... 3. Hi everybody! This is your listowner, Pat. It's been a long time since I have written something to all of you. We still have family illness, in fact we recently had another family member added. This is why you haven't heard too much from me. There are a lot of other things going on, but I won't bore you with all of that. *************** I just want to remind you folks, about unsubscribing, or when you get a new e-mail address. When you get a new e-mail address, be sure you unsubscribe your old one first, and subscribe your new one. If you forget which address to send it to, just look at the list address, and then add: -request@rootsweb.com If you are on digest mode mail, where there are several notes in one email note, then be sure to use this address: VESTAL-D-request@rootsweb.com If you send to the VESTAL-L-request@rootsweb.com when you are actually in the digest mail mode, it will bounce back and tell you that you are not of the list. This is most of the problems that crop up, as folks forget which mode they are on. Also, it just might be easier for some folks to just go to the rootsweb site, and subscribe and unsubscribe from there. If you have any types of problems, and just need to get a hold of me, please, please put in the subject: HELP and I will open this up when I get a chance to check my mail. The other problems that come up, is that your internet provider, sometimes add in some extra characters to the end of your email address. So you may subscribe with one, and then when the ISP adds extra characters and you try to post a note to the list, your mail will bounce back to me, telling me that you are not a subscriber. If this happens, I can add you to the accept list. And this way, you can post, and yet not receive duplicate notes. If this is happening to you, put HELP in the subject, and I will take care of it. **************** We have had several new members join us recently. We would ALL love to see your Vestal line posted here. Maybe you will find some others on your same VESTAL line! ***** I'm still looking for additional information on George Simeon Jay, b. 1806 prob. SC, a Vestal descendant (I think). I need to find proof that the Simeon Jay b. 1806 in SC, is the same person as George Simeon Jay, that showed up in Red River Co., TX about 1843. In Red River Co., TX, 1847, he married Mrs. Susannah Dean, widow of Asa Dean. George S. Jay died in Lamar Co., TX in 1856. Known children with an unknown wife (would like to have her name!), are, Jesse C. Jay, George S. or W. Jay, Mary F. Jay that m. Leonard Snowden. Children with Susannah Dean (maiden unkn.), are William Jay, and Susan Ann Jay that m. Ira Cooper in Jack Co., TX. William and Susan lived in Jack Co., TX, in the 1870 and 1880 census. If George Simeon Jay is the same person as Simeon Jay, then there was a first marriage to Ellender Eliza Walton about 1826, and they had a dau., Elizabeth Ellender Jay b. 1827. Ellender died in childbirth or soon after having Elizabeth. If George Simeon and Simeon Jay are the same person, then the father is Jesse Jay that died in Edgefield Dist., SC about 1837. Then this Jesse is a son of Joseph and Mary Cothran Jay of Abbleville Dist., SC. And Joseph is a son of William and Mary Vestal Jay. I sure would like to confirm this!!!! 1. Re: [VESTAL-L] Vestal line
    2. Pat, Since the census index is 4 typewritten pages and I have already made copys, I thought that mailing them to those that requests them would be easier. I have had only 3 requests so far. Wes
