    1. [VESTAL-L] John Vestal and Sibby
    2. Tomikin
    3. Tony and other interested Vestal researchers, below is a hypothetical Vestal family, not yet proven, but put together by several circumstantial pieces of evidence for the sake of research possibilities.. The John Vestal below is not to be confused with the John who married Hannah Dixon and Elizabeth Carter. That John's will conclusively eliminates him as the father of the children below: 1 John Vestal, Sr. - ------------------------------------------- Birth: abt 1765, Cane Creek MM, Orange Co., NC Death: aft 1830, Macon Co., MO? Father: James Vestal (1730-1793) Mother: Phebe Allen (~1747-) Spouse: Sibby? (Name could be a nickname for any form of Elizabeth or Could be Sibil, Sibyl, or Sibilla, or Sibbia or Sabrena??) Birth: abt 1768, Surry Co., NC? Marr: abt 1786, Surry Co., NC Children: David (1788-1879) John (1788-) William Samuel (1795-1862) James (1794-<1850) Lavina (ca1808-1850) Jacob (~1792-) Rebecca (~1803-) 1.1 David Vestal (Twin of John) - ------------------------------------------- Birth: 2 Jan 1788, Surry Co., NC Death: 1 Oct 1879, Shelby Twp., Ripley Co., IN Burial: Evans Farm Cem. Jefferson Co., IN At the age of 22 (1810) David Vestal moved with his two brothers one a twin brother, John, to Wayne Co., KY. On 22 Aug 1812 he enlisted in Capt. Micah Falls Co., under Col. Barly, Kentucky Militia. Receive a Bounty land Grant for his service in War of 1812. Spouse: Sarah Wade Birth: 1789, Fayette, VA/Montgomery, KY Death: 3 Oct 1875, Brown Twp., Ripley Co., IN Father: Dawson Wade Jr. (~1766-), son of Dawson, Jr. and Rachel Burnside. Mother: Nancy Rice (~1768-) Marr: 9 Apr 1812, Wayne Co., KY Children: Susan A. (1814-) Rachel (1816-<1860) John (1817-1918) first born son Mary Ann (1821-1901) Sarah Isabelle (1824->1850)Twins David (1824->1860)Twins named after parents William Henry Harrison (1826-1849) George Washington (1827-) Elliot J. (1829-) Caroline E. (1833-1926) Hannah (ca1834-) Rebecca Lavinia (1835-1927) 1.2 John Vestal Jr.(Twin of David) - ------------------------------------------- Birth: 2 Jan 1788, Surry Co., NC Said to have lived for a while in IN central or northern part of state. Thought to have married a sister of Sara Wade, the wife of his twin brother, but this may not be true. No evidence found in Wade family marriages. Personally I think John travel west to MO with his parents. 1.3a William Samuel Vestal* - ------------------------------------------- Birth: 13 Aug 1795, Chatham Co., NC Death: 15 Dec 1862, Jackson, Monroe Co., IA David Vestal above had a younger? or older? brother named William. There are two or three other possible Williams. This William is chosen because the IN Vestal descendants thought that David's brother, William, married David's wife, Sarah Wade's first cousin. This William married 1st Mary or Polly Moore and upon her dead her sister, Easter Moore. Both Moore sisters were 1st counsins to Sarah Wade. Spouse: Easter Moore (2nd wife) Birth: 1800, Montgomery Co., KY Death: bef 1850, IN Father: Thomas Moore Mother: Nancy Wade (~1772-), daughter of Dawson Wade, Sr. and Rachel Burnside. Marr: 9 Apr 1820, Montgomery Co., KY Children: Jacob (1821-) Jemima (1824-1903) Nancy (1826-) Sarah Ann (1828-) Lavina (1829-) Margaret Jane (1830-) Maria (1832-) John (1834-) Elizabeth (1835-) Amanda (1836-) Eliza Catherine (1837-) William Samuel Jr. (1842-) Other spouses: Mary Moore "Polly" 1.3b William Samuel Vestal* (See above) - ------------------------------------------- Spouse: Mary Moore "Polly" (First wife) Father: Thomas Moore Mother: Nancy Wade (~1772-) Other spouses: Easter Moore 1.4 James Vestal - ------------------------------------------- Birth: 1794, NC Death: bef 1850 Spouse: Jemima Wright Birth: ca 1796, Wayne Co., KY Father: Evan C. Wright (1762-1846) Mother: Rebecca Summers (~1774-~1864) Marr: 10 Feb 1814, Wayne Co., KY Children: James Emerson (1815-1897) David (1817-) Nancy (1822-) William S. (1824-1903) Jacob (1827-) Edward Johnson (1829-) Amy Jane (1830-) Lavina (1831-) Claiborne (1832-) John E. (1834-) 1.5 Lavina Vestal - ------------------------------------------- Birth: ca 1808, Wayne Co., KY Death: 1850-1855, Macon Co., MO Lavina's obituary in Macon, MO definitely states that her father's name was John Vestal Spouse: William Phipps Birth: 1 Sep 1808, Wayne Co., KY Death: 4 Nov 1900, Macon Co., MO Marr: 25 Dec 1829, Wayne Co., KY 1.6 Jacob Vestal - ------------------------------------------- Birth: abt 1792 Spouse: Selah Summers Marr: 13 Aug 1812, Wayne Co., KY 1.7 Rebecca Vestal - ------------------------------------------- Birth: abt 1803, Wayne Co., KY Spouse: Claiborne Wright Birth: abt 1800 Marr: 11 Jan 1821, Wayne Co., KY Please note that there is a 1830 Delinquent tax record in Wayne Co., KY that lists John Vestal, Sr and John Vestal, Jr, and James Vestal as all having "gone to Missouri." Also James Vestal's marriage record states "both gent's parents present and approved marriage." His parents were in KY, had left NC. So the John, Sr. is likely John Vestal and wife, Sibby. The John, Jr. very likely is David's twin brother, John b. 1788. Interestingly, David's first son is named John. There is a similarity in the names of the children of David, James and William, more suggestive circumstatial data, but not proof. The other possible Williams are: William Vestal b. abt 1792? married Harriet Anderson in in Kenton Co., KY 19 sept 1830. She the daughter of a William H. Anderson. David Vestal and Dawson Wade, David's father-in-law, witnessed the will of a John Anderson in 1814 in Montgomery Co., KY. William and Harriet Vestal lived in Kenton Co, a stone's throw across the OHio river to Jefferson co., IN where David lived. Another hard to place William Vestal is the one who married Rachel Dougan about 1724 in TN. I belive this William is more probably the son of William Vestal and Sarah Chamness Vestal (both Vestals) born in 1792. But no proof that I have of where these Williams fit. Other that our family tradition (which may be wrong!) that our David's brother, William, married Sarah Wade's first cousin. There was a William Vestal witness to the will of Dawson Wade Jr. Or Sr?? I forget. The William and Harriet Vestal wrote will in Grant Co., KY 1856, probated there in 1864, a son, John and widow Harriet in 1870 census. Wm. age 50 in 1850 census, Grant co., KY John and David the twins were said to have had a sister, Rachel who was left behind in NC when the sons ventured across the Cumberland Gap and followed the trail to Boonesboro, KY (now Madison Co.) I think she had married and may have come to IN later. Which Rachel she is I do not know. James Vestal and Mary Jay had a daughter, Rachel who married John Bullock but she would be an aunt. Any corrections or additions or further speculation would be helpful. Tom

Particularly I need to not that she is NOT the same Phoebe Allen, mother of Amy Thompson who married Samuel Thompson. Or was she?? Also I need to know which of James Vestal's many children were born from which wife. For James and Mary I have, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Rachel, William, Thomas, David B., and James, Jr. For James and Phoebe Allen I have: Jesse, Isaac, Rebecca, and John. For James and Ann Cassady I have no children this being a marriage in old age.

    1. [VESTAL-L] PAUL HARVEY ON LITTLETON
    2. Dianne
    3. PAUL HARVEY ON LITTLETON Paul Harvey read this Letter to the Editor on his news cast a couple of weeks ago. It was tracked down on the Internet through the San Angelo Standard - Times; give them full credit for this article. 4/27/99 How can we blame it all on guns? For the life of me, I can't understand what could have gone wrong in Littleton, Colorado. If only the parents had kept their children away from the guns, we wouldn't have had such a tragedy. Yeah, it must have been the guns. It couldn't have been because of half our children being raised in broken homes. It couldn't have been because our children get to spend an average of 30 seconds in meaningful conversation with their parents each day. After all, we give our children quality time. It couldn't have been because we treat our children as pets and our pets as children. It couldn't have been because we place our children in day care centers where they learn their socialization skills among their peers under the law of the jungle while employees who have no vested interest in the children look on and make sure that no blood is spilled. It couldn't have been because we allow our children to watch, on the average, seven hours of television a day filled with the glorification of sex and violence that isn't fit for adult consumption. It couldn't have been because we allow our children to enter into virtual worlds in which, to win the game, one must kill as many opponents as possible in the most sadistic way possible. It couldn't have been because we have sterilized and contracepted our families down to sizes so small that the children we do have are so spoiled with material things that they come to equate the receiving of the material with love. It couldn't have been because our children, who historically have been seen as a blessing from God, are now being viewed as either a mistake created when contraception fails or inconveniences that parents try to raise in their spare time. It couldn't have been because we give two-year prison sentences to teenagers who kill their newborns. It couldn't have been because our school systems teach the children that they are nothing but glorified apes who have evolutionized out of some primordial soup of mud by teaching evolution as fact and by handing out condoms as if they were candy. It couldn't have been because we teach our children that there are no laws of morality that transcend us, that everything is relative and that actions don't have consequences. What the heck, the president gets away with it. Nah, it must have been the guns.

    1. [VESTAL-L] How to give a cat a pill
    2. Dianne
    3. It's a slow night, so probably no one will notice if I slip this in. HOW TO GIVE A CAT A PILL We had a sick cat that had to take 4 pills a day. What a Fiasco! Husband holds open the mouth, I try to shove a buttered pill down her throat, she kicks it back out, he tells me what a dumb idiot I am that I can't shove a buttered pill down it's throat. we try again, same thing, the Baby laughs. After third or fourth time, we get it. down. Then on to next pill, same thing, only now daughter, her husband AND Baby laughing, husband lets go of cat mouth too early, crunches finger that is shoving pill.( Mine!!!!!) Black and Blue and Throbbing. So now he is going to try it, how hard can it be? Here he comes with his welding gloves on, and old hunting coat, and safety goggles. I thought we would die laughing, even the cat. But, you say, did that work,? Hell no! I thought my husband was going to choke it to submission, so daughter took over and slipped the pill down it's throat. It would have been easier to shoot her. The next vet that tells me" here are the pills, just place it at he back of her throat and hold her mouth closed, and she'll swallow it", is going to get a black eye.---Original Message-----

    1. [VESTAL-L] I feel naked
    2. Dianne
    3. I knew you would click that one open. I moved all my mail from my inbox to their own folders and now my inbox is just sitting there empty. I feel naked. Never have I ever had NO MAIL sitting there. I don't know about you guys, but my eyes feel like they are loaded with sand, I know it's from searching on the screen until 2 in the morning. When I search, if I find something I think is important, I mail that page, or send a link to myself and I can read it later, and don't have to try to remember where it was. I tried bookmarking the pages I wanted, until I got so many pages marked I don't know where I'm at. Another thing I just learned (all by myself) is : I have family tree maker, and when I find something on a page during a search, or if someone sends me something, or if you find an obituary of someone in your family tree maker, I copy and paste it into the notes page for that person. Works out really well and prints out with that person's tree. Of course you people already know this. And when someone inquires about someone in your family tree, find that person and go to gen.report and copy a generation or so for them and paste it on to an e-mail for them. Or if they are just looking for the mother, father, or siblings., just copy and paste that. It's better than saying " Whadda you need", that's crude. Well enough of my morning rambling. Dianne

    1. [VESTAL-L] weather in California-off topic
    2. Dianne
    3. Here we are in Sunny California Well, Well, Well, Here we are into the first part of August. Everyone seems to be dying (literally) from the heat. I got my electric bill yesterday, It was only a mere $248, sooo I am sitting here with the whole house fan on and enjoying the nice breeze it generates through the slightly open window. Feels like a balmy breeze blowing off a rice field. (that's not too cool) I wonder how many days I can cut back on using the air conditioner? Maybe 3? It is starting to cool off in the east, so that means it it going to get hotter here. I had to make 2 batches of plum jam today and all that steam was killing me, but I held out. Tonight my husband says, "It's not that bad", sure easy for him to say, sitting there in his recliner watching some damn show twice as loud as it should be, While I have to vacumn, fold clothes, make jam, fix the diinner, wash the dishes, and then he say's, " Do you want to make me a milkshake?" Well, of course I do you darling litlle man, as soon as I finish stirring the jam for four minutes without stopping, and putting it in it's little jars! I wonder if the heat makes people go crazy or just makes them so irritable that they want to kill that man in the recliner. After he goes to bed, I think I will turn on the air and cool off. Dianne

    3. I receive this in response to a query to Eunice Vestal, a Vestal researcher: >"John Vestal, born 2 Aug 1770, Cane Creek MM., Chatham Co., NC, the >son of Thomas and Elizabeth Davis Vestal, m 1st (date unknown) >Hannah Dixon, nothing further known. He was reported married to >Elizabeth Carter, d/o Samuel and Mary (Barnes) Carter by 7 Feb 1795 >(Cane Creek MM, NC). They had five children: Mary, Samuel, Jemima, >Rachel, and Elizabeth. John's will, dated 10 July 1804, Warren Co., >OH mentions son Samuel and "all the girls." His wife was pregnant >at the time and he made different provisions if the baby should be a >boy or a girl. It turned out to be a girl. A couple of the >children were born in NC but the family had moved to OH before 1799." I have John Vestal married Elizabeth Carter 2 May 1795, Randolph Co., NC . Elizabeth Carter born 17 June 1769, Cane Creek MM, Orange Co., NC. Note the above Elizabeth Carter could be the source of "Sibby" wife of John Vestal, but the above children are proven by the will. Therefore the above John is not the father of James Vestal who married Jemima Wright in Wayne Co., KY. Of course, there could be another source for Sibby. Tom

    1. [VESTAL-L] VESTALS, 1800s, KY, IN
    2. Tomikin
    3. Would anyone with a searchable Vestal database, please search your records for any Vestals with "Madison Co., KY" in their records or "Boonesboro" or "Wayne Co., KY". I am still trying by several approaches to find possible Vestals related to my ancestor, David Vestal, b. 2 Jan 1788 in Surry Co., NC. He lived in Ripley Co., IN which is extreme Southeast Indiana. He was said to drive his wagon on a three week round trip to visit his twin brother, John Vestal in a nearby county. A John Vestal, bought land in Lawrence Co., IN as early as 9 Aug 1824 , the same year David of Ripley Co. bought his land in Ripley. Our Vestal family tradition said that David and his brothers, John and William came from KY for land in Indiana. David was said to have last lived in "Boonesboro" which I believe was in Madison Co., KY. The twins, David and John, were said to have a younger sister, Rachel Vestal who stayed behind in North Carolina when the brothers including an elder brother, William Vestal moved to Wayne Co., KY. I think?? Rachel was said to have moved to IN later in life. I have a Rachel Vestal, b. 15 Dec 1797, Surry Co., NC, the daughter of Thomas Vestal and Amy Thompson, who married Thomas Jonathan North 19 Dec 1823, in Surry Co., NC. Some data bases show the Norths to have died some where in IN. Does anyone have the county? John Vestal b. 1797 in NC, son of William and Mary Wheeler Vestal is said to be the John Vestal who lived in Lawrence Co., IN. His second wife, was born in "Madison Co., KY" whence came my David and his family. So I need to ask how sure is the data recorded for the John Vestal of Lawrence Co, IN. Is there any possibility that he was born 1788 instead of 1797? Could this be the reason I cannot find my David's twin brother in Indiana records? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Tom

    2. Hi Tom, John Vestal, Sr, b 30 Sept 1793 Chatham, NC d. 26 Aug 1874 Bedford, Indiana at age 81 of cancer, heart problems and cystitis, son of William and Mary WHEELER VESTAL m 22 Nov 1821 in Lawrence, Indiana, Elizabeth "Betsy" CROOKE HAMM, young widow of Joel HAMM (mother of two infants, Alfred and Sally Ann HAMM), b 30 April 1794 Madison, KY d. 1886 Bedford, Indiana, daughter of Maj. John CROOKE and Anne Doggett REEVES. John Crooke was a surveyor for Daniel Boone and company and laid out the city of Richmond, KY, and was the county surveyor for nearly 50 years retiring just a couple years before his death. (Information from the genealogy of the CROOKE family, DAR records, and various written and historical accounts, newspaper articles, etc.) John VESTAL Sr. did have a brother David VESTAL b 1797 Chatham, NC m Margaret Hodgin. He also had a brother William David VESTAL b 1795 Chatham, NC m Elizabeth Newby in Randolph County, NC. John VESTAL, Sr, son of Wiliam and Mary Wheeler VESTAL was NOT a twin. Information in my data base is from Eunice VESTAL, family bible records, autobiographical sketch, marriage records, the will of John VESTAL, Sr, Quaker records, from the newspaper article "John Vestal, Pioneer of the 1860s by Claude Parsons. Also, from the History of Lawrence and Monroe Counties, Indiana, Their People, Industries, and Institutions, 1914 B. F Bowern and Co, Inc, Indianaoplis, Indiana. and from the documents and records of various descendants from William VESTAL/ Mary WHEELER. I have no information on the NORTH family other than to have their names in the data base. I hope this helps :)) Peggy Hill [email protected]
