    1. [Vessey] Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: "Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails." We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. Please have patience about the creation of your group. The response has been tremendous and it is taking time to get them all set up. Also, creation of this group will depend upon your response to this missive. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [Vessey] Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

    1. [Vessey] Introductions
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Jim (Pops) Jackson and have been given the privilege of acting as List Admin for the VESSEY List. I have been active with Rootsweb for nearly 20 years and have received great pleasure in doing so. I hope this message will help spur renewed activity with offers of helpful information, requests for help etc. Obviously this means that Rootsweb is back in active status after a period of difficulties that have been dealt with and needed upgrades made. If you have not already done so, you may register at https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/postorius/lists/ and be able to see all the lists to which you are subscribed as well as control how your messages are delivered, etc. I hope to hear from you soon with your comments, information and questions. Best wishes, Jim

    1. [Vessey] John Vesey 1647-1700
    2. Marsha G. Kamish
    3. Just wanted to throw my question out there again. Does anyone know the parents of this John Vesey? He came to America around 1670 to Cecil County, MD. His descendants have been written about in a book by Ann Veazey Davis. There is speculation about his parentage but none that are feasible for his documented birth and death dates. He was from either the Suffolk or Essex area in England. Any info or suggestions would be gratefully accepted! Marsha Kamish Veazey Technical Writer Katy, TX "Oh, bother," said the Borg. "We've assimilated Pooh."

    1. [Vessey] [Admin] The most frequently asked question of subscribers is:
    2. Manaia Alofa
    3. Rootsweb mailing lists are automatic and are managed by list robots. These robots take care of subscription requests and bouncing (rejected) emails. The most frequently asked question of subscribers is: ***************** "Why have I been unsubscribed?" Answer: If your list mail cannot be delivered for any reason, the list robot unsubscribes you after a certain number of failed attempts. (For the VESSEY list the maximum member bounce score is: 3) This can happen for a number of reasons - some of the more common reasons are that your mailbox is full, your spam filter is blocking the list mail, your ISP is blocking list mail from Rootsweb, you have put an automatic responder on your email.... If you were unsubscribed and did not wish to be taken off the mailing list, simply subscribe again. However be forewarned that if whatever caused the list robot to unsubscribe you the first time is still happening, it will simply remove you again after a specific number of bounces--3--(rejected list mail to your email address). But as a courtesy to all VESSEY listers, I can re-subscribe you manually. Just let me know. ****************** Other questions asked are: "How do I unsubscribe?" Answer: Simply follow the instructions at the bottom of every list mail message. ****************** "Why is my mail not getting to the mailing list?" Answer: Make sure that you are sending from the same email you are subscribed under. The list robot does not recognize names. It only recognizes email addresses. If your sending email address is not on the subscriber list, your email will be rejected. ****************** "Why am I not getting list mail?" Answer: Check the HelpDesk notices in the yellow box for announcements about any technical problems with Rootsweb mail. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ If you don't find the answer to your problem on the HelpDesk page you need to check if you are still subscribed to the list. You can get a list of all your subscribed to mailing lists from Password Central: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ If Password Central doesn't include all lists to which you should be subscribed, re-subscribe to any lists that are missing from your subscribed lists by sending a new e-mail to: [email protected] (replacing the word LISTNAME with the actual list name). Put only the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject and message body of your e-mail. ****************** Should anyone need further elaboration then you may give me a contact. 3. One of my ancestors John Vessey married Anne Staley Dawes at Chaddendon, DBY 15 Dec 1730. Their grandson John was given Staley as a second Christian name and this practice continued until the generation of my grandmother Eliza Staley Cotton born in Birmingham in 1884. 2. Manaia Alofa
    3. November 17, 2008 Online Genealogy Dictionaries and Lists I have been collecting URLs (Web addresses) of various online dictionaries and lists that are useful to genealogists. These are useful when trying to decode foreign or obsolete words often found in genealogy work. Here are a few of my favorites: The Encyclopedia of Genealogy: http://www.eogen.com (Disclaimer: This is a site that I created but the data has been created by many different people. In fact, you can also add data to the Encyclopedia of Genealogy.) Abbreviations Found in Genealogy: FamilySearch has an extensive list at https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Abbreviations_Found_in_Genealogy_Records. Other lists may be found at : http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/abbrev.html and http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sam/abbr.html and http://www.genealogy.com/Glossary/glossary.html and http://www.geisheimer.org/info/gene/abbr.htm A List of Occupations, many of which are archaic. You can discover what your ancestor really did at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dav4is/Sources/Occupations.html (with emphasis on England and its 16th and 17th century colonies ) and http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rigenweb/ocupaton.html and http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genepool/jobs.htm and http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wiashlan/occupations.html and http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/misc/occupations.shtml “Cousinship” - What is a second cousin twice removed? While it is quite possible that an old website has Moved or no longer exists, it is also possible that the website is Still there, but the specific page link has changed.
