    3. Source, The Rutland Daily Globe-- May 12, 1876. EAST DORSET. The unfortunate little boy who lost his life at South Dorset recently, in consequence of injuries received by falling from a swing into a pan of boiling syrup, was a son of Mr. James McBride, and not of Mr. McPhilam , as we stated. He was a grandson of Mrs. McDevett, also of South Dorset, who, though apparently scarcely on the shady side of middle life, has sixty grand children and fourteen great grand children. Mr. A. J. Mason captured a pike last week, in the flume of his saw mill, which was twenty-six inches in length and weighed nine pounds. A big fish and a rare catch for our waters. Mr. David Stone, who has been at the Brattleboro insane asylum the past year, has just returned to his home and family, cured of his insanity and of the use of the "weed," and looking all right and fresh as a daisy. A part of the new centennial rails for the Harlem Extension, have arrived. Our village schools opened May 1. The higher department is in charge of Miss Davis of Peru, and the primary is taught by Miss Ella Bebee of East Dorset. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby

    2. Is "use of the weed" mean he was using hemp or marijuana? Reason asked is my ggrandfather was there (insane asylum) and it was said that he "went crazy when he used tobacco" which I expect means wild hemp or marijuana. I wonder if that was a fairly prevalent thing in the late 1800's? -----Original Message----- From: Joan Bixby <JOMARIE37@webtv.net> To: VTBENNIN-L <VTBENNIN-L@rootsweb.com>; VERMONT-L <VERMONT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thu, Mar 8, 2012 10:58 pm Subject: [VERMONT] 1876--East Dorset News Source, The Rutland Daily Globe-- May 12, 1876.
