At the pilot family search site I found the probate records for Uzal Peirson, son of Moses, husband to Dorcas, who died intestate. All the documents are dated in 1822/1823: the appointment of an administrator, inventory, real estate sale authorization, real estate appraisals, complaints written by the administrator that the commissioners in charge of the estate funds allowed several persons to drew money from the estate without basis or his authorization. Since his estate was valued at over $23,000, there was a lot of money to dole out. Here is the mystery. On one of the pages the administrator Charles Adams writes: Having become satisfied by ocular demonstration that the within named Uzal Pierson is not dead but living, I think it proper that this order should be returned and therefore return the same into the probate office. [signed] Charles Adams, Aug 16, 1823 Uzal's tombstone is pictured on Find A Grave. It is clearly marked "In memory of Uzal Peirson, who died Jan. 11, 1836, aged 72 years 8 month & 7 days." He is buried next to his wife Dorcas, who is named in the probate file as his wife. History of Chittenden County, p. 674: "Uzal Pierson also became well to do, and owned a farm near the lake, afterward owned by Ezra Meech, Jr., but was unfortunate toward the close of his life and lost most of his property. He came to his death by falling from a wagon on the 11th of June, 1836, aged seventy-two years." There is surely a good story here! Not many people are alive after their estate goes through probate!
