I need to know if my great grandfather was actually born in Vermont. A few months back someone contacted me who does visit the archives, but his work schedule has tied him down and I don't want to seem like a pest :) So, if there is anyone else who goes to the archives and wouldn't mind looking into one person for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Here's the background: My great grandfather, Frank Matthews, died in 1945 which was a good 16 years before my mother was born. His birthdate of 25 Jun 1890 doesn't appear to be disputed, but where he was born hasn't been determined. In the 1900 Census, his birthplace was Canada (French). In the 1920 and 1930 Census, his birthplace was Vermont. The WWI registration says he was born in West Concord, VT, while the WWII registration AND obituary say he was born in St. Johnsbury. Making matters worse, the obituaries of his 5 siblings indicate they were all born in St. Johnsbury. Even more confusing, the original family name was Mathieu. It was Anglocised to Mathews or Matthews, but the women used Mathieu as a maiden name. All I am looking for is the following: 1. Verification of name 2. Location of birth 3. Verification of birthday 4. Verification of names of parents. Of these four, this is what I have: 1. Francis Matthews 2. St. Johnsbury or West Concord 3. 25 Jun 1890 4. Edward Matthews and Julia Dubois His father has also been written as Edmond Mathieu or Edouard Mathieu. I hope this doesn't seem like a lot to ask for. If it turns out that he was in fact born in Vermont, at a later date I may ask that there be verification of the siblings. It's quite possible that the parents immigrated from Canada, married and had children in Vermont, and then moved to Lawrence, MA in 1895. In any event, thanks in advance to anyone who can do this research for me. My email address is schofieldfamilytree@gmail.com Thanks again! What was the work in Canada for Irish emigrants? In the era of 1842-1850? Was it railroad-mining or lumber? Who employeed the Irish? My ancestors landed in New Brunswick in 1842, were married that same year in April in St. Sylvestere's Parish, Quebec, then spent about 8 years doing what? They ended up in VT and farmed from 1850 on, because of the holdings of land that they held in VT I gather they must of had some money "put away". Thanks
