    3. Vermont Journal, Windsor, Saturday, July 12, 1884 Chester News The Fourth passed off pleasantly, and everybody seemed to enjoy the races which came off as advertised. In the morning the bicycle boys, to the number of about a dozen, paraded Main St., after which the exhibition of fancy riding by members of Brattleboro Club took place in front of the schoolhouse. Clifton L. SHERMAN won the prize, performing some very difficult tricks. At 1 o'clock occurred the bicycle race, seven wheels starting, though only three held out to the end of five miles. C. L. SHERMAN won, time 26 minutes; Fred REED, 2nd and C. R.CROSBY, 3d,all of Brattleboro. The track was in very bad condition for the race. The trotting came immediately after. The three minute class, purse $100, divided into $50, $30 and $20, was won by Joel TODD's "Joe Todd," East Wallingford, first; H. S. FROST's "Arabian Girl," Bellows Falls, second; Fred LOVELL's "General, " Bellows Falls, third. Best time, 2.50. The 2.40 clas, same purse, won by Charles HASKELL's "Billy," Troy, N. H., first; H. S. FROST's "Red Bird," second; Fred LOVELL's "Texas Jack, " third. Best time, 2.52. Prof. Jasper SAWYER of Worcester, Mass., will give an organ recital at Lt. Luke's, next Thursday. Miss Lulu LEE has returned from Springfield, Mass., where she has been the past year attending school. A.L. HOLDEN has returned to town, and is at work in his old place on the soap stone quarry. P. H. HUTCHINSON and son, Arthur, of Boston, are in town. The case brought befoe Judge WALKER, at Hugh HENRY's office, Tuesday, to see whether a guardian should be appointed to ccare for the back-pay which Mrs. FISH received from the government, to the amount of about $2,000, was dismissed. The Central hotel has been re-tinned this week, Miller and Hadley doing the work. Mrs. SMITH, of Hanover,N.H., is visiting at J. S. CHAPMAN's.
