The Leonard Barns/Burns you mention is the man I'm looking for. NARA has him as one person in the index to Compiled records (M602) - "Leonard Barns . . . orig. filed under Burns," and there are two nearly identical cards for him that I obtained from NARA. My Leonard Barron's family was very often in earlier records called Barns or Barnes and I suspect that the soldier is actually Leonard Barron. I will look again at Johnson, State of Vermont . . ., to see whether I can figure out where Leonard Barns's comrades were from (it doesn't say for him).
