If you want to be simultaneously amused and baffled, just read some late 1800s newspaper accounts of baseball games (the ones that describe the course of the game, not just the box scores). Every position had about two dozen nicknames, as did every kind of play or pitch. And the writers seem to have been determined not to repeat any one of those terms more than any of the others....
