    3. The Vermont Phoenix, Brattleboro, Friday, January 16, 1891 Vernon news Hard colds accompanied with bronchial troubles are quite prevalent. In school district No. 2 one-half of the scholars have been absent on account of the epidemic. Mrs. HOWE, who is in her 87th hear, is quite low and not expected to recover. Solomon THAYER, aged some 76 hears, and very lame, slipped on his crutches and fell on the ice last Sunday and injured himself quite badly. His daughter Nora is very ill with rheumatic fever. About 50 of the relatives and friends of B. A. STREETER called on him on Monday evening to remind him that it was his 57th birthday anniversary, also the 20th anniversary of his marriage. Mr. J. A. BROWN, in behalf of the company presented Mr. and Mrs. STREETER with substantial reminders of the occasion, including some $25 in cash, a hanging lamp and centre table, clothing, and various other articles. Mr. STREETER responded, showing appreciation of the motives of his friends, and remarks were also made by Mrs. C. H. NEWTON and others. A plentiful collation was prepared and all enjoyed a pleasant evening. Transcribed by Ruth Barton -- Ruth Barton mrgjb@sover.net Dummerston, VT
