DICKINSON of New York has been in town this week A special service was held in St. Michael's church on Tuesday morning last, when, with the consent of the rector, the Rev. Henry MOTTET, rector of the Church of the Holy Communion, New York city, baptized Lillian and Ethel, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. LEIGHTON. C. P. GILSON will go next Monday to St. Lawrence county, New York, to visit his horse buyer, John TODD, and on his return will advertise a fine lot of horses in The Phoenix. Willis BARNES and wife of West Randolph have been visiting in town this week. L. D. TAYLOR has been in Boston this week to attend the funeral of Mr. Benjamin FRANKLIN, a family relative, a notice of whose death is given elsewhere. Rev. Mr. DAY, Rev. Mr. BABBITT, Capt. HALL, Eugene ADAMS, and S. B. EMERSON and daughter attended the fellowship meeting at West Townshend yesterday. Mrs. F. J. PARRY returned from Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Her health shows an encouraging degree of improvement. Capt. CHILDS delivered his lecture on the postal service at Springfield Wednesday evening and Chester last evening. Eben F. WELLS of West Superior, Wis., paid a flying visit to his mother and sister and other Brattleboro friends on Wednesday and Thursday. Sergeant Otto HOWE is home to learn the Roberts system of instruction in the Y. M. C. A. gymnasium, so as to introduce it into the regular army. Gilbert McCLURE, who has been so seriously ill for a long time, is improving. J. Dorr BRADLEY is visiting in town. Misses Nettie HARRIS, Nellie and Lizzie BOND are in Boston for a two-weeks stay. Louis PETTEE gave a party Friday evening in honor of the Misses FOX of New York. Charles ALLEN of Missouri, who came East with a head of 24 deer for Austin CORBIN's Newport, N. H., preserve, was in town Tuesday. DeWese DeWITT has moved from Tyler block to the Bliss House. Mr. E. Frank MORSE, accompanied by his sister, Mrs. Asa OSBORNE, are visiting with Mrs. A. M. BODGE for a few weeks. Mrs. T. J. B. CUDWORTH's many friends have received with satisfaction the favorable reports which have come from Dr. Holman's private hospital in Boston, where she underwent an operation for the removal of tumors last Saturday. Her speedy recovery is expected. The National and New York Life insurance companies both settled promptly their policies on the life of the late Arthur J.PRATT.
